Tournedos with a veggieburger in the background.

Hmmm. Mixed feelings. All the tables and chairs outside are wobbly. Being a big guy as I am, it might me be difficult balancing your way through dinner. First I got a bitter lemon that was not nearly cold in a warm glass. So that was gross. The waiter promised me a red to medium tournedos and got me medium to well done one. Still: very tender and tasteful, but not what I ordered. The green harissa that came with it was very nice. Fries: awesome. Mayonnaise: awesome. Salad: nah. So I got a pretty good dinner. But it could've been so much better if they had paid a little more attention. Great spot, nice staff and at lunch be sure to order the grill chicken with cheese and jalapenos sandwich! My friend had the veggieburger, which was good!

Mouthful after mouthful of awesome. After meeting co-owner Thomas some time back, the lady and I decided to give Radijs a try. Located on the corner of a bridge on the Admirals Canal (admiralengracht) it is easily accessible by train, car, bike, or on foot. Started off with a round of the beer of the month, a Goveneur Pilsner (deliciously funky) followed by an appetizer portion (still large enough for a lunch) of the Peanut soup and a delicious citrus infused baked Brie salad. Followed this up with the Coq au Vin For myself and a perfectly cooked Entrecôte for my date. Good, simple, affordable fare with great attentive service. Ingredients were key. There wasn't a flavor that spiked the pallet or a texture that did not belong. I enjoyed the fact that the chicken was not cooked for very long in the sauce, it was still slightly crispy as it was cooked, along with the potatoes in the oven then given the sauce bath which included delicious diced spec (salty bacon), mushrooms and onions. The soup of the day and the Coq are certainly easily finished. However, the appetizer version of the daily salad and the entrecôte proved to be too much for my partner in crime. (Entrecôte comes with a side salad, French fries, and what tasted like home made mayonnaise) Try and sit close to the open kitchen to catch some of the other smells as they hit the fire! Delicious. Total bill: €54 (€5 tip for outstanding attention to table needs.)

I've only been three or four times mostly for lunch and once for diner. What I have noticed is that the quality of the food has been consistently good from the moment the opened their doors to this day (Jan 2013). The menu is simple which is probably one of the reasons why they can focus on the quality instead of on the quantity. It's a no thrills easy going place where it's easy to relax and enjoy your company and your meal. In case you want/need to stay connected, their wifi is free, simply ask for the password.

To me it lacked some spice or kick. If for instance Indian food is too spicy for you, Mr. Pinoy is the way to go. I have no comparison, because this was the first time ever I had Filipino food. It all seemed a little fat as well. But, it tasted ok. The guy who helped me was really friendly and they've only been open for two weeks. At the moment you need to pay cash. But that will be fixed in two weeks and they're working on delivery. Three stars at this point, spice it up some more and this could be really good.

The owners are from Pampanga, which is renowned to be one of the foodie regions of the country. It's a land locked region that had a significant Spanish influence, so expect a lot of meats (pork, chicken and beef). Flavors tend to be savory, sometimes sweet and often rich. This is not diet food! If you want it spicy, ask for a side sauce to add to it - they'll happily oblige - but the food will not come spicy. It's just not part of the cuisine, the spice is added after. Particularly good at Mr Pinoy are: 1. Longanisa - sweet and savory sausage that is usually served with eggs and rice 2. Tocino - sweet and savory pork belly also served with eggs and rice. They also have a chicken version that I didn't try yet. 3. Bulalo - beef shank soup 4. Liempo - grilled pork belly 5. Crisy Pata - deep fried pork knuckle 6. Menudo - Stew with garlic, onions, diced pork, diced potatoes, soy sauce, vinegar, tomato sauce and some other ingredients To those familiar with Filipino cuisine, give them a call a head of time so you can find out what they're cooking for the day, or they can prepare what you like or get the grill fired up for fresh liempo. You can eat in or take out. Their toko is also well stocked and with much better prices than some of the larger Asian markets. PLUS - they have the hot & spicy vegetarian chicharron that I fell in love with the last trip to the Philippines.
