Esposito is a cute little boat docked on the River Aura, between the Turku Harbor and downtown…read moreTurku. It's kitschy but fun, with lots of over-the-top decorations and seating both on land and on the boat. We walked up to the bar and asked the man there for the most traditionally Finnish item on the menu. He said that Finland didn't actually have that many unique dishes, but that he recommended a dish called fried vendace. It was essentially a basket full of small whole freshwater whitefish, which are fried and eaten whole. Our server suggested garlic sauce or blue cheese sauce for dipping, and we opted for garlic sauce. If you're not accustomed to it, dipping and eating an entire (albeti small) fish can be a little off-putting. But despite my initial squeamishness, we discovered that it was delicious! The basket could easily have fed 4 people though - it looked like an appetizer but we both were full and still had quite a bit left. The basket of fried fish, an apple cider, and a beer cost us €20. While we were eating the man came up to us and said that he had forgotten to tell us that coffee and tea are included - excellent customer service! So we finished our food and drinks and had coffee, accompanied by tiny but delicious little chocolate chip biscuits. It was an allover pleasant experience. We chatted with the man at the bar for a while and he was very friendly and wished us a pleasant journey and stay. The food was great, the drinks were great, the atmosphere was great, and it's on a boat in Turku. Perfect!

I arrived on a Friday for lunch not knowing what to expect and was surprised by a buffet with…read moreNordic food, very interesting and large accommodations, and a quiet beer garden in back. I'm sure your mileage may vary depending on when you come and whether this buffet is consistent or rotational, but regardless, I think the venue is well worth a visit if you have time.

The building has an old antique feel with lots of dark wood. Plenty of tables and booths spread across multiple rooms, it appears this place could hold a lot of people. It was mostly empty when we were here, but that was on a Monday evening. I imagine on the weekend it can get pretty busy with so much room for people. We ordered a ribs and a hamburger and they were huge portions. We could have easily ordered one meal and shared it. The burger was a pretty good standard burger with a big patty and lots of vegetable on it, lettuce, tomato, onion, and pickle. The ribs were a big, lots of meat, and better than the burger. Neither was the best in its respective category, but both were satisfying and good. No complaints. They both came with potatoes that were like a cross between chips and fries. They were awesome! I have never had fries like this before. They were wide and flat, thinner than fries but thicker than chips so that they still had some soft potato inside but were nice and crispy at the same time. I would come back just for the fries, some of the best I have eaten. The beer was okay, but in the world of craft beer there is definitely room for improvement. The Kakolan Kalpea pale ale was decent but not as flavorful as I prefer. The Lehtori lager had a strange, bad taste and I really did not like it all. It tasted skunky as if it had gone bad or was old. The Vehnä wheat beer was the best I beer I drank here. It tasted like a traditional German hefeweizen with the banana and clove flavors clearly noticeable and was very enjoyable to drink. I would visit again for the wheat beer and fries.

The food was delicious, the service was friendly, and even the people we met while hanging out here were nice. It was a beautiful and cool summer day and we sat on the patio enjoying the sunshine. Vegetables grown in a green house here on the island were used to make the green salad and it was fresh and refreshing. Snails from France were used to make the tasty and garlicky escargot. The whitefish from the nearby island Houtskär was delicious and roasted with the skin on and served with a white wine cream sauce, mashed potatoes, roasted tomatoes, and vegetables. The fish was cooked perfectly and the skin was crispy. The smoked salmon soup was some of the best soup I have ever eaten. The lightly smoked flavor of the fish was fantastic in the creamy soup with potatoes and dill. Dark Archipelago Bread accompanied the soup and was very good, especially when dipped into the soup. It was the perfect meal for a cool summer day. We also enjoyed multiple good Finnish beers while relaxing outside in the sun. Joni, who was working at the restaurant, assured us that we were getting the best beers, the best food, and the best seat in the restaurant. I agree! He was very friendly and helpful and made our experience even more enjoyable.
