My wife and I came for a "slab bowl" pottery-making class with Katie Lackler. Despite having no previous experience, we had a great time. Katie kept the class informative and fun. After initial instruction, she did a great job of visiting each student to answer individual questions and to offer up other ideas as to what else the student may be interested in doing. It was also interesting to see the ideas that fellow students came up with. read more

This is a family business with a great selection of sturdy, rustic, and decorative pottery and ceramics. They have taken special orders when I have needed a specifically designed, decorated, or glazed piece. I haven't experienced their wine, classes, or concerts but I have heard great things! I sort of think of it as Hwy 4's living room! Doesn't really feel like we've been to the mountains unless we stop by on our way to BV. read more

I recently spent a day with friends visiting Murphys, California, and my favorite pottery place, Quyle Kilns. Actually, visiting Quyles is the only reason I've been making this trip once or twice a year for the past 15 years or so. They mine their own clay, most of which is distributed to many of the schools and art colleges in California. Their showroom is filled with items that are not only gorgeous and well made, but very reasonably priced, and made out of sheer love of doing so as this family business survives on clay sales, not showroom sales. The customer service and downright friendliness can't be beat either. My favorite part of the visit is being allowed into the back room, where they are in the various stages of making the pottery. I love seeing what's recently come out of the kiln and possibly having first dibbs on it. Such fun! This trip, I purchased a few bowls to add to my collection and a small gift for a friend. And I'll surely be back for more! If you happen to be driving through or around the Murphys area, I highly recommend you stop in. Quyle Kilns is right outside the town of Murphys, but its easy to miss on Hwy 4 (on the way up to Arnold), as there is only a small sign on the left side of the road, with a driveway leading up to the showroom, not seen from the hwy. They also have a great little family run indie winery on the property. We stopped in and sampled the wine, which was quite yummy, and I even brought a bottle back for a friend who works for a local and well known SF wine shop. She thought it was quite yummy as well. So, actually, you get two great spots for the price of one. And while in the area, there's so much more to do. The town of Murphys it'self is loaded with lots of fun and interesting little shops to browse and some really wonderful restaurants. My personal favorite is Grounds. The surrounding towns, Angels Camp, Sonora, Jamestown, etc. also have much of the same to offer and the whole area could make for quite a lovely weekend getaway. read more

This is at the top of a driveway right off Highway 4. This is so much more than your typical pottery shop. It has been around since 1941 and doesn't just do pottery. This is a clay processing plant where raw clay is turned into clay sold to potters across the country. That's an interesting process - be sure to have it explained to you. They process at least three different clays, each producing a different color in the resulting works. The full factory for ceramics is available to see. They make their own glazes, so you can learn about that. Then, there's a letterpress operation -- ask to see the presses and hundreds of types of type and printing blocks and more! There is also a forge operation. Classes are available in pottery, printing and metal working! Patricia gives a great tour! The prices on the pottery items are very fair. Several different potters are represented in the showroom. Certainly worth a visit! read more

A wonderful stop off of Hwy 4 on your way to or from Arnold! Beautiful handmade pottery, from a collection of local and nearby artists. If you need a unique and special gift or souvenir from your trip to the Sierra, this is a must-do. Besides, Brice Station Winery tasting room is directly across from the store. I love this place and I have several pieces from their Pottery gift shop. Pamela gives an extensive tour of the facility and it's just really awesome to see how far they've come from the early beginnings of her parents. It's quite the story. And I understand they have concerts in the summer but I have not had the opportunity to attend any yet. And they stand by their work if you have a piece that breaks they will replace it! My potter friends recommended that we stop by so I took my visiting cousins from Vermont with me. Unexpectedly we got a completed tour of the studio and production facilities. It was great, much more than we expected but so nice and educational. I bought some paper clay and can't wait to try it out. read more

This is an old fashioned family of artisans producing quality throwing clay from local deposits in the time honored way. I wanted to stop because this is the clay I learned to throw on in college, and I was curious about where it was made. The owner, daughter of the founders, Pamela Quyle, is charming and hospitable. Her son showed us how the clay is made and where they do their production. We purchased very reasonable well made dinner ware pieces that have held up well in the oven and dishwasher. They have quite a selection of pottery Pamela has made and from several other California clay artists and craftsmen. Don't miss it. read more
