As we've grown to have our own homes, my siblings and I still would not use anyone else for home repairs, additions or renovations. Is it unscrupulous to Yelp for family? Because that's the way Mike, the owner, and his crew make you feel when they work on your home. They are exceedingly patient during the planning and budgeting process, and then deliver a quality of work that we think is unparalleled. We've recommended them dozens of times with no hesitation and never had someone that hasn't simply gushed about the work once it was complete. Other times, we've seen friends elect to go for the mega-hardware store contractor option, or so-and-so's brother who is a part time handyman, and the contrast is painfully obvious. When Taft Construction explains an estimate, you really understand what you are paying for. (and once the work is complete, you wonder why there wasn't a 75% artistic/quality stipend tacked on) But over the years, through the experiences of friends and neighbors, we've seen exactly how some contractors cut price to get a job, and the results are very telling. So if you are Yelping for home additions or renovations on the North Shore, go no further. Just don't tie them up for too long, because I think it might be time for us to get a new deck this summer.

I hired Louis and his team on February 28, 2025 for a $70,000 basement renovation. The agreement…read morewas that work would begin by early May and finish by early June. Instead, work did not start until mid-June and the project was not completed until mid-September. During the project, there were several significant issues: 1. Thermostat buried - At one point, the team plastered over the thermostat and forgot it was there. This required corrective work that should not have been necessary. 2. Plastering problems - The plaster work was uneven and needed to be reskimmed, which their GC, Matt, acknowledged. When Louis came to inspect, he became visibly frustrated, blamed the painters who were not responsible, and attempted to sand the walls by hand to demonstrate a prep issue. He also made negative remarks about the other workers present. I later apologized to the painters to smooth things over. Ultimately, I had to negotiate a compromise to have the walls corrected properly. 3. HVAC access - Instead of installing the contracted access door, a low-cost plastic cover was installed. This did not meet standard practices for a project of this scope. I requested that this work be completed properly, but no action has been taken to date. 4. Flooding - The crew overloaded the electrical outlet connected to the HVAC condensate pump, which tripped the breaker. Since the breaker was not reset, the pump remained off over the weekend and the basement flooded. Louis attempted to make us pay for a plumber to diagnose the issue, even though it was clearly caused by how the work was left. 5. Pest infestation - After the project concluded, a cockroach problem appeared in the basement storage areas. These areas had not previously had issues. After consulting an exterminator, it was determined that the likely source was construction materials brought in during the project. When I raised the issue, Louis stated "Good luck proving it was my fault" and hung up on me. Some of the team members -- Matt, Dave, and Junior -- did solid work and were professional to deal with. However, Louis frequently did not take accountability, did not resolve issues professionally, and shifted responsibility to others. Bottom line: If you are considering this company, I recommend reviewing other options. While the project was eventually completed, the delays, extra costs, and handling of issues made this a stressful experience.

It was a large and quite ornate home with muralled walls and ceilings and chock full of fragile antiques. All the work took place during that ridiculously snowy winter nearly 4 years ago. In spite of the logistical challenges, the crew all showed up on time every day. Robert, who ran the day-to-day operations, is both talented and wonder. He ensured that everything was done right and kept us informed throughout the process. You know you have a lot of damage when the insurance adjuster starts with an estimate of $1.5 million in structural damage and doesn't bat an eye at that. It took about 9 months to complete everything but at the end our magnificent home was back to normal. The entire crew was wonderful. My husband (now my late husband) was ill during the project and the guys were always so sweet to him. The crew really felt like family after a while. when everything was completed, we really missed them all. These are honorable and talented people who know what they are doing and how o treat people right.

We added some additional work for which he did do and then he finally gave us a price in writing. We have paid him most of the money. It is now August and we are no where near having a kitchen. He only spends about 2 days a week on this job and after giving him the majority of the money with many unfinished work he is now holding us hostage refusing to even do the work we have already paid for adding another invoice for more money and refusing to do the work until he is paid.
