Ellen was fantastic. Her extensive knowledge about art and her warm style made our visit memorable. We were a party of 4 and we could not ask for more. Even other tour guides saw us in the cafe and told us how lucky we were that have her. Thanks again for a wonderful experience.

If there is one thing for certain -- the quickest way to put my husband to sleep is by visiting an…read moreart museum. Throw in a guided walking tour, and we have a comatose situation on our hands! So needless to say when I mentioned that I booked us on a 2-hour art tour of the Getty Center in LA, he wasn't exactly jumping for joy. But as usual, he went along with my plans even though he wasn't exactly sure WHY I was so excited about an art tour. That was, until I told him that it would be a juicy, behind-the-curtain tour at the Getty run by a company called Museum Hack. I first came across Museum Hack a few years ago when I was looking for unique things to do with my parents in LA. We never had a chance to do it together before my mom passed away. But I figured, why not be tourists for the weekend? I know my mom would have loved it. Our guide Vic had an infectious energy and passion for all things art. And the very first stop included a piece of art I would have never even stopped to look at. It was a glass bottle in the shape of a German guy... Also, known as a "joke glass." It turns out that it was an old-time mug for drinking booze! The drinker had to guess how to drink from the vessel -- and if any liquor was spilled, he was required to start again with a full glass. Basically, it's like a drinking game from college now on display in the prestigious Getty Museum. Who knows, that classic beer bong you got from the Jersey Shore might one day pop up at the Getty? Okay, probably not... Vic led us from one gallery to the next. She showed us the statues outside including one that had a removable penis (which actually was stolen a few years back!). The work of art is of a horse and rider by Marino Marini called Angel of the City for famed art collector and socialite Peggy Guggenheim. When Guggenheim commissioned the piece she insisted on it having a removable rod (aka penis) that could be screwed on and off to allow for a quick manning-down of the rider in case she had a prudish guest on her list. I can only imagine the well-heeled Ms. Guggenheim, quickly unscrewing the statue before the big shin dig! Today, the very prominent "rod" is permanently affixed. So don't feel tempted to tug it off, or face the wrath of the Getty security! Clearly, this isn't your grandma's tour. After getting an overview of the museum and checking out the gorgeous view from the outdoor gardens, we were ready for one of Museum Hack's signature elements -- an interactive game. Now, I gotta admit, I wasn't sure that I was going to be into this part of the tour. Really? A game?! But it turned out to be more fun than it sounds. Really! Vic sent us on our way to take photos on our iPhone of how we would go about stealing a piece of artwork. It's sort of like improv on the spot. Our story involved using a piece of art to slap the security guards on duty (though most tour groups say they'd steal the art by repelling down from the ceiling!). Next, Vic asked us to snap a photo of a piece of art that inspired us. I selected a work of a man wearing a bright white cape since it reminded me of my childhood and performing magic tricks in front of my family (or any audience for that matter!). My story was enough to win the grand prize at the end -- a free magnet from the Getty gift shop. Hey, I love anything free so I'll take it. And speaking of gift shops, you better know where I ended up at the end of our 2 hour tour. Yes, the gift shop is pretty amazing. And we might have even bought something. I couldn't pass up the book The Chronicles of Old Los Angeles, which outlines how the City of Angels came into existence. Okay, totally not about art but still a fascinating read.

Museum Hack takes it to the next level. My wife and I both highly recommend the BABS tour. I think you will too! Check it out!

She and her girlfriends are all huge art appreciators and museum goers. I thought a "behind the scenes" art tour would be right up her alley. I consider myself pretty plugged in to the LA art scene - however, I was referred to a company that I had never heard of - ART MUSE LA. Art Muse Los Angeles is a community of art historians, artists and educators who offer small groups private art tours - in museums, galleries, artist studios and private collections - throughout the LA region. What a stroke of luck! I was put in touch with Clare Kunny, the owner and Director. She was incredibly charming, smart, and approachable on the phone. I told her I was looking for a curated art tour, something more than your typical museum docent tour. She emailed me with several fantastic, diverse ideas. I opted for a two-hour tour with a theme around women in the arts. Our guide, Susan Power, was incredibly knowledgeable. She highlighted contributions to American art of the LA-NYC gallerist Virginia Dwan at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Then we walked across the street to Spruth Magers gallery to tour the exhibition POWER displaying art made by African American women from the Civil War era to the present. Susan gave an in depth talk on both subjects in conjunction with her choosing select artworks that showed the strength of and vision of these women artists. My mother and her friends were blown away. She is still talking about it. If you're looking for something interesting, fun, and unique to do in LA - for a date night, for something to do for fun with friends, for a special occasion - I highly recommend checking out Art Muse LA. They are a gem in the rough. Thank you Art Muse LA for making my mother's birthday so incredibly memorable and special!

I've visited the Getty several times over the years and at first I found it a little overwhelming because there are so many exhibits and paintings that it's hard knowing where to even begin. Eventually I decided to make a game out of my visits instead. I started using ChatGPT to give me lists of paintings to look for, questions to ask myself while observing them, facts about the artwork, and prompts about what I do and don't like about each piece. Weirdly enough, that completely transformed my experience at the museum and made each visit feel much more intentional instead of me just wandering around aimlessly pretending to understand everything. Highly recommend trying this if you're someone who enjoys museums but doesn't necessarily feel "educated" in art. As a huge Van Gogh fan, I was shocked to learn that his painting Irises is actually displayed here. I had seen some of his work at MoMA in New York City and somehow never realized one of his paintings was practically in my own backyard. If you love Van Gogh, definitely don't miss it. I also personally enjoy exploring the North Pavilion the most because it's where many of the religious paintings are located. The gardens are absolutely beautiful and probably one of the most photographed parts of the museum for good reason. Great spot for pictures, especially if you enjoy Instagram-worthy scenery. There are also several areas throughout the Getty where you get gorgeous views overlooking Los Angeles. The Getty also has two restaurants, several cafés/coffee carts, and recently added a lounge bar around the plaza level. The food is decent but definitely expensive (which honestly shouldn't surprise anyone at this point). The café areas sell salads, sandwiches, pita and dip plates, pastries, snacks, coffee, and alcoholic beverages. Personally, I don't think the salads are worth the $18-$19 price tag, so I usually just grab coffee, snacks, or occasionally a small bottle of champagne and save my actual appetite for afterward. One thing I appreciate is that they have charging stations in the entrance hall in case your phone is dying halfway through your visit. There are also multiple gift shops throughout the museum with a pretty wide variety of books, souvenirs, stationery, art prints, and gifts. I think weekdays are probably best if you want smaller crowds, but I usually go on Saturdays because the museum stays open until 9 PM and parking becomes free after 6 PM on Saturdays specifically. Otherwise, parking is usually around $25, though reduced rates kick in later in the afternoon. A few tips in case you plan to visit for the first time: - Bring a sweater or coat because it can get surprisingly cold and windy. - Download the Getty app beforehand so you have the map available. - Wear comfortable shoes because you will walk a lot. - And don't pressure yourself to "understand" every piece of art. Some aren't going to stand out to you and that's okay. - Be ready for traffic. The downside of the museums location is that it's smack next to one of the worst freeways known to man -- the dreaded 405.
