The pub is popular with the locals, features guest ales and is pretty small so draws a completely different crowd to the others here. If you're a rugby fan, visit this pub as they show rugby before football and if you just want a decent pint and none of the trashy dance music you'll get with other bars in this area, The Vittoria is a great place to come out.

Before you accuse a drinking stalwart of trying too hard to keep up with the times, the colour change luckily hasn't affected the atmosphere within. The Vittoria remains as unpretentious, laid-back and characterful as it was was before. There's a wide selection of drinks, a faithful crowd of regulars and entertainment most nights of the week ranging from a quiz (with free curry doled out while the answers are checked) to steak or sausage tasting nights. Undoubtedly ne of the best places on Whiteladies for a quiet (especially weeknight) drink.

It's only a tiny pub but it attracts a lot of locals, which adds to the sense of community (there's usually a dog sniffing around after a tennis ball that people are throwing from each end of the pub). They have loads of board games to choose from, and a massive selection of Empire magazines, which is perfect for nerds like me. They have a great selection of cider and red wine as well, but really this is a vintage pub of which there are not too many left. By that I mean it hasn't been bought and kitted out with a shiny, soulless new interior and a 'gastro' style kitchen that focus on the garnish on your burger more than the quality of the pint in your hand. It is a cosy pub and the perfect place to sit and chat with mates. Check out the quiz on Tuesdays as well!

Although I live…read moreround the corner, this is definitely a place filled with those who've been in the area for a lot longer than four months, gathering round an excellent selection of beers and wines in a cosy, fairy lit atmosphere. The eclectically decorated walls are plastered over with beer mats from all over the world. There's also beautiful old original Victorian fittings which add a real sense of character. I was particularly impressed by the selection of Belgian beers (the owner is a fan), with all the matching glasses to boot. This is clearly run by someone who appreciated their alcohol, and bar staff tend to have a lot to say on the matter too, Although there never seems to be anyone in there, The Victoria is the perfect place to sit down on a wet and windy night to sip on a couple of 10% Kasteels.

I'm not a big fan of the Maltsters, but that was because I had a bad experience there. If you're…read moregoing for a few quiet drinks then I guess this place would be great, and the beer garden by the river is wonderfully tranquil. My friend and I went there for food and had to wait over an hour to eat! We tried getting the attention of the staff but there was no-one in sight. Then when our order came it was wrong and the staff did nothing to try to help. I'm by no means a snob but the female toilets were quite frankly scary. The day that we went, we were told that a new manager had taken over the previous day. So hopefully by now they will have made significant improvements. With some refurb to the toilets and new manager I hope that some new life can be breathed into this place, because the building itself and the riverside location are wonerful and they used to have some great gigs in the cellar.

There is a downstairs that sometimes has 'clubnights' but I mostly stick to upstairs and just chill out in the bar. It's a great place to go when the rugby is on - especially the six nations - as the atmosphere is great - really warm and friendly and not threatening regardless of your nationality. One warning - my sister had her purse pinched out of her bag in here. By the guys sitting at the next table who had chatted away to her and her friends for ages before getting up to go. However, I think this was a one off 'chancer' occasion and not the norm.

A decent pub at that perfect halfway point between the train station and Chapter for the walkers/staggerers amongst you. I like it as a pit stop, I also used to conduct quite a lot of Kruger Mag business here, as Kruger HQ used to be around the corner. The pub allows kids because it serves food, but I've rarely seen any little people running about in there. More often there is a match on and lots of heads pointing towards the various big screens about the place. Still, on that front, they show both rugby and football and I've never seen any trouble. It is most popular with City fans, but also other locals and students. The atmosphere is more often quietly jovial. It has a pleasant horse shoe bar. Cask Beers are available and they clearly know how to clean their lines. A decent no-frills place.

The Westgate is one of the better traditional drinking establishments in the city centre, what I…read morelike to call an "ol' timers' pub" - quintessentially British and charmingly unassuming. There's not much to distinguish from other watering holes in Cardiff, apart from the fact that you don't have to fear the possibility of a stabbing or a riot, which is always welcomed. For me, the best aspect of The Westgate is the massive, outdoor smoking area, complete with shelters and heaters, so you can still enjoy your cigarette even during a mid-winter downpour. Prices here are quite reasonable, making it an ideal haunt for a late afternoon session with your mates. Sport enthusiasts will enjoy watching the games broadcast on one of the many screens positioned around the place.

There's not much else down Lodge Causeway, so you'd think they'd have the monopoly, although the several occasions I've visited its been dead inside. Not exactly the social scene of Bristol, this end of town anyway. The food is basic fayre, although the sarnies and chips are of generous size and the list of fillings is extensive. The best thing I can think is that they sell the rather unusual ale, Sharp's Doombar, a dark bitter brewed down in Cornwall. You can't find it everywhere, so a pub selling it on tap is worth a visit. The jukebox is stocked with standard indie and dance tunes, so sit back in one of the large leather chairs and dream an evening away, if you so happen to venture this far out of the city centre.

I beleive that there was a problem with flies in the wine (which is on tap)but have heard that this has been sorted now. Has a sperate family/eating area which is very loarge and comfortable. Food is great as is a Hungry Horse Pub. Bar section is also nice with large screen tv, juke box and fruit machines. Also has a very large carpark and seating in the front and back of the pub. Only downside is that due to some rougher local pubs shutting down they have started to move here creating a bit of havoc.

I've only been here twice, but both times I've felt distinctly uncomfortable in the place. Its agenda is undoubtedly in line with middle class wine drinkers and it lacks a certain spontaneity. What's more, prices here are pretty extortionate. You could purchase a good quality bottle of wine from your local off license for the price of one small glass at The Windmill. Food is also expensive, although the Pieminister pies are definitely worth sampling if you're willing to fork out £7. Basically though, if you're not one for conservative pubs, I'd suggest you steer clear of The Windmill.

I first came here just yesterday, and completely loved it the minute I walked in. The bar staff had heavy thick moustaches, which I later read that was for a moustache competition.. I was sold. Any pub that welcomes kooky, fun on-goings, has my vote. The atmosphere here is great, and it is the sort of pub for the locals around that area, which always provides a pub so much more character, mostly due to the colourful natures of the people that come in. It is quite big, and has a little hidden-ish room on the left of the bar, and on the right, down some steps, is another room with a fair few couches and tables, and also an outside covered patio area! Food here is around £5 - £8 pounds, which upon initial viewing is a tad steep. However we were hungry, so we went on an ordered some anyway. You get cute porcelain animals as a table marker after you order - bonus points from me here. My mussels in a white wine and cream sauce with a basket of bread was really good, and for the £6.95 I paid for it, fully worth it. The winning discovery of the night however, is Tom's pies, made in Dartmoor. If you have read my Pieminister review, you will know how big a fan I am of them.. but Tom's pies blows Pieminister out the water! The lamb moussaka was absolutely divine. The flavours inside really made you go 'aaaah'. I will most certainly be coming back here again, and although it is not exactly very close to where I live, it is definitely worth the trip.
