So I am finally slowly working my way through the large backlog of review drafts I wrote while on vacation in January... among which were about a dozen different pastel de nata shops - until this trip, I hadn't had any real pastel de natas, though I did once, years ago, on a trip to SF, have the equally enjoyable self-imposed "job" of trying as many different Hong Kong egg tarts as I could while there. This was my first time trying the OG version, though - but I feel like I'm *somewhat* of an expert now in what the best version would look like, having tried a whole bunch of variations all across Portugal over the space of a couple weeks. In the majority of cases, they were places I specifically put on my list to try, after collating various "best of" lists in both Porto and Lisbon - but this, obviously, being neither Porto nor Lisbon, was an entirely happenstance find as I was walking by (clearly I wasn't going to pass up the opportunity to try additional bakeries!)
There are no seats, it's entirely a grab and go type bakery, which was fine, as we were just walking by anyway. As of January, their tarts were 1.5 euro, which was definitely among the cheapest we saw - but they were absolutely not of any lower quality. The crust was flaky but light, crunchy but not overly crunchy, and not overly filling. The top was absolutely fully and perfectly brulee'd, crispy and marshmallowy. That said, of all of the egg tarts we tried, the ones here were the most pudding-like - once you bit into one, it immediately started dripping out, necessitating eating it quickly. Absolutely delicious, solid 5/5 egg tarts - just do NOT try sharing one here, as we often did, so we could try the sheer number of them we tried over the course of the trip, on top of all the other pastries we ate. Get your own here - they're cheap enough. read more
