Warm, comfortable beds. Next time I have to plan to relax a little more
    Maurice P.

I absolutely loved being here. Because of some issues at the airport, I came in a little later than I wanted (that being around 2am). Luckily for me, Alex was at the front desk to assist me. He got me all set up with my room, my luggage, parking my vehicle, breakfast in the morning, and was very knowledgeable in navigating the areas I in which I was interested in visiting later that day. My room was just right for a single traveler; cosy and comfortable. I slept almost immediately after hitting the bed. The following morning, I had a filling and delicious breakfast, trying some of the food of the region. There is an amazing view off the terrace which you can enjoy while eating either inside or out. After breakfast I took a little tour of the hotel, and really enjoyed the artistic decor both inside the hotel and in the exterior, as well as the lounging areas in the lobby. After a day of exploring downtown Bergen, I came back to the hotel to relax, have a drink and get ready for the rest of my adventure. That's where Simona came in. She was able to give me a brief review of life in Bergen, about drinking customs in Norway, and things of that nature. She also let me try the beer brewed especially for the hotel. On my next trip to Norway, which is hopefully sooner than later, I will definitely be staying here again.

Certainly have had worse views from an airport hotel...

I was here for a weekend event onsite so it was very convenient to be able to get to the venue and my "temporary home" quickly and easily on foot after I come out of the Bergen airport. I was able to check into my room when I arrived shortly before noon 2 days ago, and had time to unpack and walk around the area before my event started that late afternoon. I am happy that the event organizer arranged our room rate to include full board, as the buffet meals at this hotel were delicious! I enjoyed all 3 meals everyday during my stay here, as the varieties everyday were very good. I had reindeer stew as part of my first night's dinner and it was excellent! I also enjoyed the halibut last night and the salmon this afternoon for lunch. The melons they had at every meal, in addition to the many dessert choices, were sweet and delicious. The room was basic like most Scandinavian hotels that I have stayed, but this one also has a nice couch which could be a nice lounging daybed to just relax in the room. I didn't get to stay in the room too much as I was at the event in one of the ballrooms most of the time from morning to evening, but I had good sleep and rest both nights during my stay. The ballroom is beautiful and the staff maintain the place nice and clean. Breakfast starts at 4am so I recommend anyone who has a early morning flight to catch to stay here, and event organizers expecting attendees coming from different parts of Norway or anywhere in the world to have their conference or event here.

There was a separate exhibition in the basement of the hotel, honoring the composer. The hotel restaurant was an oasis of comfort, with a classy décor and ambiance, as well as prime service by knowledge and extremely forthcoming staff, live violin concert, and with top-notch cuisine. The morning breakfast buffet offered a wide variety of spectacular food choices that one could safely start the day without thinking of the next break. For dinner, the hotel restaurant was not only more quiet and off touristy sections in the city center, but it provided spectacular 5-star choices on point that left nothing to desire.

The room was lovey and very comfortable with a soaring ceiling, tall windows and expansive bathroom. We had a large sitting area with a couch and other furniture and being on the 2nd (European 1st floor) meant we could just use the stairs for our coming and going. Housed in a former bank, the lobby restaurant had an impressive feel and the central location-just a short walk to key sites, the ferry, and restaurants worked well for us. In general it has what you'd expect from a high end luxury boutique including prices. The disappointment was the restaurant and hotel bar. On our first night we arrived late from the ferry and stopped in to the tiny lobby bar for a drink. The whiskey sour from their bar men tasted like unsweetened lemonade and was almost in drinkable. On another night after a long day, we dined in the French Bistro themed restaurant and had an underwhelming meal. Not what one expects at this level of establishment. Bottom line-a great place to stay, just skip the hotel bar and restaurant.

Rooms are cleaned by request. Exercise room was comprehensive and had all the equipment needed for a good workout. A Safe in the room would have been nice. Another highlight was the Breakfast-free-amazing spread. Full Bar and restaurant along with self serve Coffee Bar were available. Check-in was quick and seamless. Paulo took great care of us. We actually wanted to book an apartment but this place caught our eye, as it is literally a stone's throw from Bergen Train Station (which is the final stop!). I would say, I walked literally 1.5 mins to get from the station to the hotel! You can even see the train station after stepping out from the lobby doors - it is THAT near! Upon stepping in, I was pleasantly surprised at how warm the interior was, with very well insulated doors (two layers with a wind catcher). During my 3 night stay here, I even walked down to the lobby bar for coffee/tea in my PJs without any jacket on and I felt comfortable. The decor of the lobby was very modern, urban and yet homely all at the same time. We were very tired from our 12 hour scenic train ride from Oslo and the friendliness and smiles from the check-in lady sure made our night so much better! It is the norm for hotels in Norway not to have any coffee/tea/cups/water kettle in the room but for this hotel, they even provided free-flow of coffee, tea and hot water at their lobby cum bar! Hot water was very important to me as I am used to drinking a hot cup of tea before bed, plus it was crucial to making cup noodles - yes we were craving cup noodles after 3 weeks in Norway! Love the long wooden table in the middle of the lobby where guests would drink coffee/tea, sit and read the papers or do the crosswords in PJs (like me). The room was comfortable, and bigger then most hotels, good enough for us with two mid-sized luggage. The best part of the room, besides its cleanliness, was the shower and shampoo gel! It has a woody scent with complimenting earth notes that was reminiscent of the signature Aesop scent! Zander K was proud of their own collection that they even sold some of their shower gel at the lobby; I was sorely tempted to buy but I restrained myself - bath times became that much more relaxing! Our room rate came with breakfast included and for breakfast, they served the usual widespread of bread, yoghurt, eggs (hard-boiled and scrambled), ham, bacon, all kinds of cold cuts, a very huge selection of cereals/toppings, muesli, salmon, tuna, baked cod fish etc. We were pretty sad to leave Zander K but if we were to go back to Bergen, we would definitely stay here again! Taking the train in and out of Bergen while staying here was really very convenient and easy!

We hustled with our luggage around the city's pond to Rica Hotel. Walking briskly in the cold, wet weather the trip was about 15 minutes. Due on the early arrival, we were worried the hotel wouldn't have a room available. So we were pleased when we got a room to have a quick nap in a real bed and freshen up before our tour around Bergen. The room was more worn than dated. Very quickly we knew it needed a little TLC. The furniture had a few noticeable marks and holes. The wooden floor had permanent boot marks, looked and felt unclean. The bathroom was bland and bare, but functional. All in all, the room as okay but it needed work. That being said, it was clear that Rica knew this property needs work because in clear view of our window was a construction site. They were working on a huge expansion project for the hotel. We weren't bothered by the noise, but we were exploring most of the day. I hope that once the expansion is complete, that the older rooms are updated and equal care is given to all rooms. The breakfast is one of the main reasons we booked at Rica. Rica's breakfast was extensive and expensive. The morning we arrived, we were told we couldn't partake in the breakfast even though we were departing early the next morning. From reading other reviews, we were worried the breakfast wouldn't be ready by the time of our departure. The staff assured us the breakfast will start early, so that we could have a quick bite before heading back to Oslo. If you're taking the first morning train back to Oslo, you will have decent amount of time to enjoy breakfast at Rica. You will have time to chew your food slowly, but just lounge around like it's Sunday brunch. Breakfast included different versions of eggs, freshly squeeze orange juice (the machine is the dining room), lots of caviar and lots of caviar. Overall, Rica is a great location. It's not in the dead center of the city, but a bit off to the side and easy to reach for those taking the train in from Oslo. Rica hotel is in the midst of renovations, so be mindful of the possible noise. Make sure you don't miss the breakfast to take you through the day. Everything is so pricey in Norway, so this is your time to fuel up!
