'Ello chaps! Radisson Blu Royal Hotel is located right in the heart of the tourist district of downtown Bergen. On the end of the Bryggen, Radisson Blu Royal Hotel is well situated. Once known as the SAS Royal Hotel, the property has undergone a transformation over the years. It's a modern, clean, and comfortable hotel. Adding the breakfast onto your package is well worth the price. Food items at the self serve breakfast buffet remains the same day to day, with a hearty amount of options including eggs, bacon, sausage, waffles, breads, fish, cheese, etc. It's worth the cost, which is nominal to add on at booking, and saves you a lot of time and money from wandering about town trying to start your day and figuring out what to eat. Even for this typical non breakfast eater, I'm glad I added it. Book early and you'll save more. Overall I give Radisson Blu Royal Hotel in Bergen 5 stars out of 5. TIP: They will NOT do early check in. TIP: Many shops including grocery stores are CLOSED ON SUNDAYS. Do some of that souvenir shopping a bit early.

We are two families with a tradition of staying overnight at hotels in downtown Bergen to celebrate our national holiday May 17th. One of the major ingredients of the celebration is the famous grand breakfast buffet every hotel in Bergen on this day, with tradional dishes, wonderful cakes and a glass of champagne to celebrate the day. It turns out overnight guests at Radisson have B-status and are served an, at best average, breakfast while guests coming in for breakfast only are served in a separate room, beautifully decorated and with all the wonderful dishes traditionally present on a breakfast buffet on such a day. So, be aware if you book this hotel that there might be A-services that you are not receiving as an overnight guest. That in addition to rooms with very different standards, some very nice, some dirty, with drains not working, no coffee, no cupboards and no places to charge your phone near your bed. This is probably the reason guests rate this hotel very differently, depending on which room they got. No one told us when we booked, after carefully checking breakfast was included, that guests would be segregated at breakfast. No one gave us the information checking in, giving us a chance to do anything about it. But it was painfully obvious when we came down, all beautiful dressed in traditional "bunad" dresses or suits, and were shown in a different direction than the other guests. Having breakfast in room without decorations, with none of the traditional breakfast dishes for this day, after having seen the other breakfast room, beautifully decorated and with all the traditional dishes, where we were not allowed to enter, really ruined our celebration. It did not help that we were not allowed to buy the glass of champagne you are normally served to salute the day. Neither were there any possibility for a paying guest, who had no coffee in the room, to have a cup outside the breakfast area without paying for it, standing in line for 15 minutes to get it since there was only one man working the machine. We have never experienced anything like this at any other hotel we have been at, Bergen or elsewhere. Don't risk your vacation or celebration by staying at this hotel. There are so many great hotels to choose from in Bergen. Shame on you for ruining our celebration, Radisson!

Hallo Bergen. Stay at this hotel and not the other Radisson Blu. This is right on the harbour and is therefore, nicer because it's close to everything. The harbour is one of the seven UNESCO world heritage sites, Bryggen Harbour, that is. The hotel is next door to the Bryggen museum. For a nice jog or hike, turn left and then pass the Starbucks and you go up and up to the top of the Floyen and there is your workout for the day (Trail runner goes nuts in this city of seven mountains). Restaurants are all nearby and on foot you can reach all the main ones. Big shopping center is across the harbour on the other side and is again, walkable, about 10 short minutes of walk, or about 0.5 miles. Internet speed is excellent. Breakfast is included (if you are of a certain status) so do get your brown cheese (brunost cheese is a caramelised brown Scandinavian whey cheese. It is produced and consumed primarily in Norway, and has been described as "quintessentially Norwegian"), pickled herring and smoked salmon cravings satisfied. In-room coffee is outstanding. Business rooms are a bit bigger but expect this to be of the SF Fairmont hotel size room as it's a retrofitted from a building of this old fishing village. Across the hotel about 30 meters (literately that is across), is the REMA1000 super market. It's very basic. There are not a lot of premade food, one can imagine why Scandinavians are so much more slim than the Brits and Americans. Grab your brunost cheese there to bring home to your friends. Raddison Blu is very popular in Scandinavia, including Iceland. Apparently the first one was set up in 1909 in Minneapolis, MN. Not surprising, consider MN's vast Scandinavia roots. Parking is adjacent and one must pay for parking on its own. Word of advice, don't drive a c class Mercedes, that size of car is going to be hard to get a car park space. And come on off-season. Rate is very reasonable, mid $100/night, wifi is included if you got that status that gets you breakfast included rate, and you are less likely to run into annoying tourists.

My sister booked this hotel for free because she had Radisson points. Normally, this hotel costs over $300 a night so we probably wouldn't have stayed here otherwise. After our Norway in a Nutshell tour, we took a cab from the other Radisson Blu by the train station to this hotel. There are two Radisson Blu hotels so make sure you know which one you're going to. The hotel is centrally located in Bergen and walking distance from several restaurants, museums, and tourist attractions. The bed in this hotel was so comfortable! I also loved that the floor in the bathroom was heated. The complimentary continental breakfast was delicious and filling. There was a wide selection of breads, meats, cheeses, fruits, cereal, and juices. The free wifi was also very reliable and just required your last name and room number. There is a bus that leaves from the hotel to the airport every 15 minutes which is convenient. It is 100 NOK per person to ride.

There was a separate exhibition in the basement of the hotel, honoring the composer. The hotel restaurant was an oasis of comfort, with a classy décor and ambiance, as well as prime service by knowledge and extremely forthcoming staff, live violin concert, and with top-notch cuisine. The morning breakfast buffet offered a wide variety of spectacular food choices that one could safely start the day without thinking of the next break. For dinner, the hotel restaurant was not only more quiet and off touristy sections in the city center, but it provided spectacular 5-star choices on point that left nothing to desire.

The room was lovey and very comfortable with a soaring ceiling, tall windows and expansive bathroom. We had a large sitting area with a couch and other furniture and being on the 2nd (European 1st floor) meant we could just use the stairs for our coming and going. Housed in a former bank, the lobby restaurant had an impressive feel and the central location-just a short walk to key sites, the ferry, and restaurants worked well for us. In general it has what you'd expect from a high end luxury boutique including prices. The disappointment was the restaurant and hotel bar. On our first night we arrived late from the ferry and stopped in to the tiny lobby bar for a drink. The whiskey sour from their bar men tasted like unsweetened lemonade and was almost in drinkable. On another night after a long day, we dined in the French Bistro themed restaurant and had an underwhelming meal. Not what one expects at this level of establishment. Bottom line-a great place to stay, just skip the hotel bar and restaurant.

Them's were the breaks as we were on the express version of the Norway in a Nutshell tour package. Bergen was a charming city and more manageable than Oslo to explore, but because transport through the fjords was time-consuming, Jamie W. and I just had a half-day in Bergen. That wasn't a nutshell experience, it was a nutcracker if you know what I mean. Good thing this hotel was such a visual delight as it was the city's old stock exchange building a couple of centuries back. It was transformed into a neo-Renaissance style with nice contemporary changes. Our Standard Double room was simple and comfortable. The going rate was about $160 per night. More importantly, it was centrally located right across the street from the fish market and down the street from Bryggen. Sadly, because we had an early morning train, we had to miss out on the breakfast buffet as the hotel has a Michelin starred restaurant (Bare). The front desk staff was very good though, as they had a takeout bag prepared for us and coordinated our luggage pickup. Hopefully we'll have a longer stay next time. RELATED - Exploring Norway? So it was noisy until 2-3am in the morning, unable to sleep. The rest of the hotel is good. Rooms, breakfast, etc. The location is perfect. But a noisy room and a bad nights sleep, that's the basics. Unfortunately, they were full that night, so we couldn't move rooms. Reception was proactive to offer a move the following night, to a room facing the inner courtyard. Which was much more quieter. So the second night was at least good. When we complained, it looks like there is no management to speak to. No manager on duty on the weekend. On weekdays, not available at 10am, nor at 3:45pm. Reception also won't take down our phone number to pass to the manager, only gave us the general email address for the hotel, to email in. For a hotel at this end of the quality scale, the lack of managerial service is shocking. And for a hotel in the middle of the city, the lack of soundproofing is shocking. Unless you can guarantee an inner courtyard room when booking, I would not recommend this hotel. Also, as I can see they have alot of cruise guests staying, I can see why management don't really care about individual guest bookings and their satisfaction. If you want to play sleep lottery, or can sleep like the dead at night, book here. Otherwise, there are many other choices in Bergen.

We actually wanted to book an apartment but this place caught our eye, as it is literally a stone's throw from Bergen Train Station (which is the final stop!). I would say, I walked literally 1.5 mins to get from the station to the hotel! You can even see the train station after stepping out from the lobby doors - it is THAT near! Upon stepping in, I was pleasantly surprised at how warm the interior was, with very well insulated doors (two layers with a wind catcher). During my 3 night stay here, I even walked down to the lobby bar for coffee/tea in my PJs without any jacket on and I felt comfortable. The decor of the lobby was very modern, urban and yet homely all at the same time. We were very tired from our 12 hour scenic train ride from Oslo and the friendliness and smiles from the check-in lady sure made our night so much better! It is the norm for hotels in Norway not to have any coffee/tea/cups/water kettle in the room but for this hotel, they even provided free-flow of coffee, tea and hot water at their lobby cum bar! Hot water was very important to me as I am used to drinking a hot cup of tea before bed, plus it was crucial to making cup noodles - yes we were craving cup noodles after 3 weeks in Norway! Love the long wooden table in the middle of the lobby where guests would drink coffee/tea, sit and read the papers or do the crosswords in PJs (like me). The room was comfortable, and bigger then most hotels, good enough for us with two mid-sized luggage. The best part of the room, besides its cleanliness, was the shower and shampoo gel! It has a woody scent with complimenting earth notes that was reminiscent of the signature Aesop scent! Zander K was proud of their own collection that they even sold some of their shower gel at the lobby; I was sorely tempted to buy but I restrained myself - bath times became that much more relaxing! Our room rate came with breakfast included and for breakfast, they served the usual widespread of bread, yoghurt, eggs (hard-boiled and scrambled), ham, bacon, all kinds of cold cuts, a very huge selection of cereals/toppings, muesli, salmon, tuna, baked cod fish etc. We were pretty sad to leave Zander K but if we were to go back to Bergen, we would definitely stay here again! Taking the train in and out of Bergen while staying here was really very convenient and easy!

We hustled with our luggage around the city's pond to Rica Hotel. Walking briskly in the cold, wet weather the trip was about 15 minutes. Due on the early arrival, we were worried the hotel wouldn't have a room available. So we were pleased when we got a room to have a quick nap in a real bed and freshen up before our tour around Bergen. The room was more worn than dated. Very quickly we knew it needed a little TLC. The furniture had a few noticeable marks and holes. The wooden floor had permanent boot marks, looked and felt unclean. The bathroom was bland and bare, but functional. All in all, the room as okay but it needed work. That being said, it was clear that Rica knew this property needs work because in clear view of our window was a construction site. They were working on a huge expansion project for the hotel. We weren't bothered by the noise, but we were exploring most of the day. I hope that once the expansion is complete, that the older rooms are updated and equal care is given to all rooms. The breakfast is one of the main reasons we booked at Rica. Rica's breakfast was extensive and expensive. The morning we arrived, we were told we couldn't partake in the breakfast even though we were departing early the next morning. From reading other reviews, we were worried the breakfast wouldn't be ready by the time of our departure. The staff assured us the breakfast will start early, so that we could have a quick bite before heading back to Oslo. If you're taking the first morning train back to Oslo, you will have decent amount of time to enjoy breakfast at Rica. You will have time to chew your food slowly, but just lounge around like it's Sunday brunch. Breakfast included different versions of eggs, freshly squeeze orange juice (the machine is the dining room), lots of caviar and lots of caviar. Overall, Rica is a great location. It's not in the dead center of the city, but a bit off to the side and easy to reach for those taking the train in from Oslo. Rica hotel is in the midst of renovations, so be mindful of the possible noise. Make sure you don't miss the breakfast to take you through the day. Everything is so pricey in Norway, so this is your time to fuel up!
