Quality Hotels (part of the Choice Hotels chain) have taken over this hotel, and given it a makeover in their green and brown colour theme.
The location is reasonably central - the railway station is ten minutes' walk and it is by the city's main local bus station. The main shopping street is a few minutes' walk and the historic centre a ten minute walk or short tram ride. It feels more like a business hotel than a tourist venue.
The rooms are very spacious and reasonably well appointed, with room safes, plenty of desk space, and built in hair dryers in the bathroom. We had a bath as well as a shower. The beds were comfortable, the rooms clean and the staff very friendly. Wifi is free and good enough for work.
Two gripes: the rooms on the street side suffer from street noise despite being double glazed. It's near a busy junction, so turning trams, cars crossing the cobbles and people noise continue until quite late (2am to 3am). If that's a problem ask for a room not facing the street.
And for €18 the breakfast was frankly awful. Limited choice (only three cereals), they'd run out of brown bread, the hot food comprised just scrambled egg, dried up baked beans and sausages, and the coffee and juices come from machines. So I'd go elsewhere...
So it's ok but light sleepers and breakfast aficionados would do better elsewhere. read more
