Quality Gardens is more than just a nursery, it's also a nice place to buy gifts. Located on 228 east of Mars High School, you can't miss this location. They have a huge selection of plants, flowers, trees and shrubs. Every time we visit, I am completely entralled with their fountain display. Nothing more relaxing than the sound of babbling water. This place is well kept and tidy. If you are in the area, be sure it visit.

The outdoor selection of flowers absolutely took my breath away - so vibrant and healthy looking. I was impressed by the variety they offer. They don't just have flowers though - their selection of trees and shrubs is extensive and all looked well-cared for. Inside the market is where the real magic happens. I have now tried their apple, muscadine, blueberry, and cherry ciders (obviously had to!) Each one has the perfect balance of sweet and tart. Also Apple Tea which is a new fave! What really sets this place apart is the staff. Everyone I encountered each visit was genuinely friendly and knowledgeable about their products. They took time to answer my questions about plant care without making me feel rushed. It feels good supporting a local small business, especially one that puts such care into their products and customer service. I'll definitely be returning throughout the seasons to see what new offerings they have. If you're in the area, do yourself a favor and check out Appleseed Farms Market!

    The Waters Edge

Michelle and Gary, the owners of Waters Edge are great at what they do and clearly love their work…read more I first visited Waters Edge a few years ago when they first opened, and Gary helped me to buy everything that I needed to setup a small water garden in a container on my front porch. The plants were beautiful and healthy. Their garden store is small, but they have a few nice water gardens for inspiration and many ideas on display. Then last year we started looking for a landscape architect or designer to help us come up with a comprehensive landscape design for our 10+ acre farmette. We focused on landscape companies with a focus on water gardens, because we wanted a large water feature in our backyard. We also needed someone who could help us create beautiful, natural looking windbreaks for our horses' run-in sheds, shade for the horses and us, and windbreaks to help prevent drifting snow on our driveway. Michelle's (and Gary's) Penn State education and experience in both landscape design and horticulture proved to meet all of our needs. She was able to not only come up with an awesome design, but also to help us select plants that will be hardy for our winters, disease and drought resistant, and as deer resistant as possible. She was great at helping to consider the impact our dog will have on our plants and backyard water feature, and made recommendations to accommodate all of our family members, even those with four legs! Michelle was very easy to work with and we love her detailed designs. She was quick to respond to emails and phone calls, and educated us at each step in the process. She even spent an entire afternoon driving us around to see some of her past work to get ideas and so that we would be confident in her ability. She provided a simple but detailed contract and written estimate before any work was performed, and kept within our budget. We've installed the first phase of our landscape design, which is a tree-lined driveway (1/3 of mile). Michelle designed to avoid planting near overhead power lines to prevent severe trimming of the trees when they get bigger. They worked with us to carefully select the variety of trees and to locate the largest and healthiest specimens possible for our money. Michelle and Gary along with one employee carefully planted the 40 trees, including amending the soil with compost/peat, staking the trees with three supports, fertilizing, mulching around them, providing tree bags to hold a week's worth of water, adding mesh guards around the trunks to prevent deer rubbing, and did the initial watering of all the trees. We are very happy with our new and improved driveway. The trees, although still small now, dramatically improved the look of our property. I highly recommend Waters Edge for all of your landscaping projects.

They are a good distance from me, a South Hills resident, so I've never had the opportunity to stop out in person until this past weekend, when a friend arranged a group outing to make fall wreaths. We first stopped in their shop to pay for the workshop, which costs $100 each and last for about two hours. Your dried flower wreath could last for up to three years. It's a little pricey but it's a fun group activity and you are paying not only for the materials but for the experience and for the expertise of the trainer, who is so knowledgeable and even teaches this workshop at Phipps. Getting back to the shop, they have a lovely curated selection of small and local business merchandise and of course their own flower bouquets, $20 each and incredibly fresh with a unique selection of flowers. If I lived nearby I would stop here weekly to buy myself a bouquet. I also noticed they were selling full-size pumpkins for $6 and mini pumpkins for $1 which is an incredible deal compared to many other shops. We were allowed to bring our own food and drink to the workshop, which took place in one of their greenhouses. I noticed their stunning selection of herbs and flower pots growing there. For our workshop, we each started with a small wreath form and some moss type of material, then were taught how to create an outer layer and inner layer, then each selected dried flowers for the top. Everyone has varying degrees of talent with activities like this and I'm not shy about saying that my talent level is about grade school; some of my friends were producing professional-level stuff and mine was not that. But it is pretty and wonderfully fragrant, particularly with the eucalyptus we used, and I have hung it on my patio where it brings joy every time I look at it. I would highly recommend them both for their skill as a florist and for their workshops!

It is written now…read moreas not many people look for a nursery review late fall and winter but rather the spring. My daughter's wedding was on October 28th. We were hunting live mums for decorating. We called MULTIPLE local nurseries. No one was willing to help, commenting that we could purchase what was left at the end of the season. As I continued down my list, I called best feeds on Wildwood. I had great experiences there before. I was shocked when the gentleman that answered the phone said to stop in and that they could certainly do something for me!!! He introduced me to two female staff members who were experts in matching colors, mums that bloomed later in the season, and sizes that I would need for each space. They also taught us how to make the blooms open at just the right time. The day of pick up they were all organized on a rack and ready to go. Can't say enough about the plant knowledge that the staff possesses. I really won't shop anywhere else for my plant needs moving forward. Can't say enough about how much it made her wedding day and the complements we received about our outside decorations. Cathy B

The one problem I had was there where virtually no customer sales help at all and after about 15 minutes I gave up and decided to leave. For me that is poor customer service even if they have nice plants and trees and a huge selection customer service should always be #1.
