It reads, "Culpepper's Rebellion. Culpeper and Durant led a revolt against British trade laws, seized the government 1677, 2 miles southeast." Culpeper's Rebellion (1677-1678) was a grassroots revolt here in Albemarle County, driven by anger over British trade restrictions and the oppressive rule of British agents. The Navigation Acts, which taxed goods moving between colonies, intensified local frustrations, especially as the Proprietors continued appointing officials who limited colonists' rights. The crisis peaked when Thomas Miller, acting governor and enforcer of the trade laws, abused his power by manipulating elections and punishing dissenters. In response, John Culpeper, John Jenkins, and George Durant led an armed takeover, imprisoning Miller and running the colony themselves for two years with greater stability. Culpeper was later tried for treason in England but acquitted, revealing the vulnerability of proprietary rule and the growing assertiveness of colonial self-governance. After the boll weevil crippled North Carolina's cotton industry, the Elizabeth City Oil and Fertilizer Company made history in 1915 by producing the first commercial domestic soybean oil--without altering its cottonseed equipment. Led by William Thomas Culpepper, the plant's success sparked statewide adoption, transforming soybeans from livestock forage into a vital crop thanks to George Washington Carver's earlier research on their nutritional and soil-replenishing benefits. Thriving in the region's climate, soybeans soon became a cornerstone of North Carolina agriculture, with the now-vanished Elizabeth City plant marking a pivotal shift in farming and industry. Built in 1782 for Thomas and Penelope Barker, the home originally stood two blocks north of its current location and began as a modest Federal-style parlor wing and half hall. Penelope Barker is best known for organizing the Edenton Tea Party in 1774, a bold act of protest in which 51 women signed a petition against British taxation--making it one of the earliest political demonstrations by women in America. Unlike the Boston Tea Party, these women signed their names and sent the petition directly to King George III, drawing international attention and criticism from British newspapers. Since relocated (yes, they moved it two blocks), it now serves as Edenton's Welcome Center and the headquarters of the Edenton Historical Commission. It is marker number A-61 and it was erected in 1967 by the North Carolina Archives and Highway Departments. The marker has the same text on both sides. It reads, "Negro orator and teacher. A founder and president of Livingstone College. Born in Elizabeth City. House was 2 miles south" Joseph C. Price was born in Elizabeth City to a free mother and enslaved father, and despite a delayed start to formal education, he excelled academically after enrolling in schools in New Bern. He pursued teaching, becoming a principal in Wilson by 1871, and later shifted his focus to ministry, graduating as valedictorian from Lincoln University and completing seminary training in record time. Price emerged as a powerful orator, advocating for prohibition, education, and racial equality, and raised significant funds during a European tour to establish a college for Black students in North Carolina. In 1882, he became president of Zion Wesley College, later renamed Livingstone College, where he gained national recognition and declined prestigious offers to remain committed to the institution. His leadership extended beyond education when he was elected president of the Afro-American League and the National Equal Rights Association in 1890. Tragically, Price died in 1893 from Bright's disease, leaving behind his wife Jennie Smallwood and five children, and was honored with burial on the Livingstone College campus. The only screw-pile lighthouse still standing in North Carolina is the Roanoke River Lighthouse…read morenear Edenton, a unique and durable piece of maritime history. It was constructed in 1886 and lit in 1887 with the intention of directing ships into the Roanoke River from the Albemarle Sound. An inventive answer to the delicate, changing soils of coastal rivers was its distinctive screw-pile foundation, which consisted of steel pilings that were physically screwed into the riverbed. In contrast to the majority of lighthouses of its type, this one was two floors tall and had a lantern tower with a fourth-order Fresnel lens positioned on a corner of the roof instead of in the middle. The Coast Guard sold the lighthouse to Elijah Tate in 1955 after it was discontinued in 1941 because of dwindling river traffic. The building was severely damaged by Hurricane Isabel in 2003, which led to a preservation effort. With the help of the public and private sectors, the Edenton Historical Commission bought it in 2007, relocated it to Colonial Waterfront Park, and repaired it. It now proudly sits on Edenton's port as a museum and a testament to the tenacity of the local community and historical preservation. The lighthouse is free to tour and the "grounds" are accessible 24 hours. It is well worth a stop. I have not seen too many markers in North Carolina that point out the original inhabitants of the…read moreland and so this was interesting. It is marker number A-46 and it has the same text on both sides. It reads, "The principal town of the Weapemeoc Indians, visited by Ralph Lane and his colonists in 1585-1586, stood near present-day Edenton." The Weapemeoc were an Algonquian-speaking tribal confederation that once inhabited northeastern North Carolina between the Chesapeake Bay and Albemarle Sound. Their main town, Weapemeoc, lay along the Perquimans River, and their territory included several present-day counties. Comprising tribes like the Pasquotank, Perquimans, Poteskeet, and Yeopim, they were culturally linked to both the Powhatan and Pamlico peoples. During the late 1500s, under Chief Okisco, the Weapemeoc encountered English explorers but remained largely passive, influenced by their small numbers and swampy terrain. Though pressured by the powerful Chowanoac chief Menatonon to align with the English crown, Okisco chose neutrality and retreated inland. Over the next century, the Weapemeoc Confederacy steadily declined due to disease, conflict, assimilation, and colonial expansion. By 1730, only a small group remained in a reserved settlement on the North River, and by 1735, their tribal identity had faded from official recognition. The marker was erected in 1990 by Division of Archives and History. It stands today in front of a small hardware store where there is parking.
