The spot with all the activity on the left is the bar, to get to the restaurant you enter a nondescript white door on the right and head straight back to the dining room. On a Wednesday at 12:30 in September it was t too busy, mostly locals, and the charming server did a decent job translating the daily specials for us. The y have an English version of the regular menu. Note: portions are really big and in the €12-15 range for entrees. I got the cod fish (bachalau) and my wife chose the grilled grouper. We ordered the "lulas grelhadas" (grilled squid) which was a generous serving of this local seafood, and perfectly cooked with a delicious sauce. Many Azorean places overcook these but Solar do Rei do Frango did a great job. The side salad served with the dish was fresh and while we thought it would make a good appetizer for two, it was in fact a large enough portion for a meal. We didn't mind, however;-) We also ordered the "Frango da Casa" (house chicken) which seemed fitting given we were eating in a restaurant named "House of the Chicken King". The roasted chicken comes with choice of sauce (mild, medium or spicy) and is served with fries. Everything was delicious and finger-licking good. Solar do Rei do Frango had a nice choice of other typical dishes but clearly the roast chicken is their specialty. They also had a nice selection of wines and half bottles. The entire meal with a half bottle of wine was less than 20 euros for the two of us. And the decor, service and overall ambience was that of a more upscale restaurant so I felt like the prices were of great value for the overall experience. We will definitely be back and recommend our guests try Solar do Rei do Frango when in the Sao Vicente area!

From the moment we arrived, we received a great deal of attention and exceptional service. The owner recommended the fish dishes, and based on that recommendation, we each ordered one. When the bill arrived, we were shocked to see that we had been charged €40 per fish dish. The owner, who had been very attentive throughout the meal, disappeared when it was time to pay, leaving us with no opportunity to ask questions about the charges. My family has deep roots in São Miguel, and because we spent an entire month on the island, we had the opportunity to dine at many restaurants, including several that were much more upscale than O Pescador. After sharing our experience with local residents and staff at other restaurants, every person we spoke with told us that comparable fish dishes would typically cost no more than about €18 each. They all expressed surprise at what we had been charged. What made the experience even more disappointing is that the owners are from the United States. As fellow Americans, I couldn't help but wonder whether they assumed we wouldn't question the €40 price because those prices are more common in some U.S. restaurants. I have no way of knowing if that was the case, but it certainly crossed my mind after learning what the typical local prices are. I understand that restaurant prices can vary, but the difference between what we paid and what we were consistently told was the normal price was significant. It left us feeling taken advantage of and put a damper on an otherwise wonderful month in São Miguel. My advice to anyone dining there is to ask the price of any fish or daily specials before ordering if the price isn't clearly listed on the menu, even if the dish is recommended by the owner. As for my family members one had an issue with the steak they asked for it to be cooked medium but it came back basically raw. Than we asked for them to cook it back again medium but they brought it back still looked raw maybe rare the second time back. Maybe it's different in America I don't know but probably not just be aware for the steak. Everything else was pretty good no complaints. I also had the strawberry gelato for dessert and it was very tasty I recommend. While the octopus was cooked well, it would have been great if there was a bigger piece or more small pieces of octopus inside. The fish flakes added a fantastic umami flavor. This is a must try. The Red Ramen Gyukotsu came topped with large chunks of bamboo shoots, fish cakes, and marinated egg. I appreciate that the egg on top was cooked completely because I am not in the "runny egg' camp. They had a good menu and were able to accommodate us without a reservation. The staff were warm and friendly and great at answering all the questions we had. We had bread with the different spreads and a massive cheese plate, which weren't expecting and filled us up. Our entree consisted of octopus rice (seasoned extremely well) and the triggerfish with rice. All amazing food. Unfortunately, they don't offer to go plates, so plan accordingly so you can finish your food. I couldn't! Had no room whatsoever for dessert but definitely slept well that night.
