Honestly, I had no idea this place existed until I saw it advertised and decided to check it out…read more I'm glad I did because it ended up being one of the more unique museums I've visited in Philadelphia. It's a relatively small and intimate space. The first floor has a gift shop and an area for workshops and activities, while the galleries are spread throughout the building. When I visited, the first-floor exhibition featured quilts, while the upstairs gallery focused more on themes of American culture. Both were fantastic. The quilt exhibition was probably a traveling show, and I absolutely loved it. I know several quilting enthusiasts, so I have at least some appreciation for how much time, patience, and technical skill goes into creating these pieces. Some of them felt less like blankets and more like full-scale tapestries. The level of detail, color work, and craftsmanship was incredible. The upstairs exhibition had a much stronger political and social commentary element, which I personally enjoyed. Art doesn't have to exist solely to be beautiful or entertaining. It can challenge ideas, express opinions, document experiences, and start conversations. I appreciated that the museum embraced that side of art rather than shying away from it. One of the coolest parts was the workshop area downstairs. There was a small market set up and plenty of people actively crafting and creating things. For a moment I wanted to join in, but the space was packed. Then I watched what everyone was making and quickly realized these people were good. Very good. At that point I remembered I was in a fabric museum and workshop and that my own sewing abilities are... let's politely call them limited. The only thing that felt a little awkward was how often the museum reminded visitors about the recommended donation. I completely understand why. Free museums need support, and I have no issue contributing. It just came up enough times that I started feeling a little self-conscious about it. I was already planning to donate on my way out, but repeated reminders always make me feel slightly uncomfortable even when I understand the reason behind them. Overall, this was a wonderful surprise. Thought-provoking exhibitions, beautiful craftsmanship, active creative spaces, and a welcoming atmosphere. If you're interested in textiles, contemporary art, or just want to discover a museum that's a little different from the usual Philadelphia lineup, it's definitely worth a visit.

I'm a bargain shopper, and I wasn't planning on shopping, but when I saw the prices I decided it was time to restock my stash of gifts. They had handmade journals, vases, bags, jewelry, etc., including many items from upcycled and or sustainable materials. In the front is an art gallery that shows really phenomenal work. Jane Gallery is one of those small galleries that really stands out. It focuses heavily on women…read moreartists and a lot of the exhibitions center around identity, culture, and lived experiences. Like most galleries, it clearly has its own curatorial style and the artists they invite reflect that. Here, the focus tends to be on representation, storytelling, and work that explores womanhood from different perspectives. I went for Philly first Fridays, and right now the exhibit is centered on women's bodies for Women's History Month. The pieces are powerful but still very tastefully done. Some works are intimate and vulnerable, others more bold and expressive. There's also a mix of mediums like painting, mixed media, and sculptural pieces, which keeps the space interesting. Last time I visited, they had a South Asian focused exhibit that really showcased culture and identity in a beautiful way. It's nice seeing a space consistently highlight artists and perspectives that are often underrepresented. Finding the gallery is part of the adventure. It's tucked down a small alleyway and you follow the pink lights to get there. It might look a little sketchy at first, but once you step inside you realize it's actually a hidden gem. They also had a make your own goddess craft activity during this visit. I am definitely not great at crafts but it was fun and made the experience feel interactive rather than just walking through and looking at art. Small space, but definitely not to be underestimated. The vibe is thoughtful, creative, and very welcoming. Definitely worth checking out.

With First Friday right around the corner its the perfect time to drop a review for another…read moredeserving Old City Art Gallery! I had no idea that Jane Gallery existed before Ministry of Awe started collaborating with other local galleries to mapped out a First Friday Tour. And from the moment that I walked through the almost hidden alleyway and entered the pink string lit door I was hooked! The owner, Alison Mustokoff, is fully committed to displaying art made by female and queer artists (https://6abc.com/videoClip/the-jane-gallery-nataliya-yermolenko-female-artists-queer/16022668/) and their main gallery caters to a featured artist each month. toss in things like a themed cocktail and a chance to meet with the artists, and the receptions feel like a big deal. In addition to art gallery viewings Jane also features things like drawing workshops and yoga on occasions which makes checking their Instagram for events a must (https://www.instagram.com/thejanegallery/).

It always has artists who manage to add an interesting theme into their work. Aside from the roosters, some of the other displays I have seen here have included one that incorporated wrenches and other tools into it's artwork, and another that placed nature scenes into locations that were very un-nature like.

I stopped in recently to see Steve Messenger's show, and was quite impressed by the detail and personality in his portraits, especially since his subjects express themselves through the smallest shift of the eye or flick of the ear. The coop members who "gallery sit" are welcoming and helpful, and beyond that, there's not a whole lot to say - this is a simple space that lets the art speak for itself.
