This is a unique and evergreen venue that adapts to whatever artist / act / DJ / event is exhibiting within its walls. Such a gem right off the Spring Garden stop, I attended a fantastic mixed poetry reading and open mic night back in October. They have two levels and there's bathrooms at the back and a couple of different ways to set up seats. The stage itself is the perfect size for a DJ setup or smaller show. I look forward to the next time I get to go back and support this eclectic spot - an obvious haven for artists and the entire scene here in Philly. Love what it used to be, and especially love what it is now! If you've attended a Mad Decent Block Party prior to the one that happened at the Piazza this year then you might be well aware of the mausoleum that used to be Diplo's temple of sound. And when he moved on the expand the Mad Decent name to other parts of the US he sold it to a group who aimed to create an incredible DIY forum for art and music. The end result delivers quite well on both fronts. It makes for a good all ages shows. And Since it used to be the studio of an exceptional DJ/Producer who knew more than a thing or two about sound (http://youtu.be/N5_vYkYPP08) it goes without saying that it might get loud. So earplugs may be recommended least you find yourself saying Its All Gone Pete Tong (http://youtu.be/g5K6pIez5P4). When PhilaMOCA isn't showcasing some incredible music its open for some pretty eclectic art viewings. And it works with plenty of collectives that are well versed in combining the 2 scenarios. I came here for a show in early November 2021. It was a small show with a local band and 2 touring acts. Probably like 30-50 there. Everyone had masks on (as required). We found street parking but I can see it being pretty tough if it's a bigger show. There is no lot or anything. Sound was good and I felt ~~cool~~ just being there. Have been to 2 shows here, one with a friend and one alone (and felt completely safe). Love this little venue! The audience has been respectful and mellow both times; it's a diverse crowd and it's clear that everyone is welcome here. I love that this intimate space is devoted solely to music/art. There is no bar here (though I believe the venue is byo if you want to drink during the show). The artists often interact with the audience after the show. If you see an artist coming that you know and love, don't miss the chance to come see them in such an intimate space. I saw Hannah Jadagu last night on the first night of her tour and I am sure this is the first and last time she'll be playing in such an intimate space at such an affordable price. Also I want to shout out the kind and hardworking staff. During the first few secs of the main set, there was a power outage, and the staff immediately took action to safely file us out and got things up and running again really quickly! I didn't take pics of the space as I was immersed in the music but trust me when I say it's a venue you don't want to miss if you enjoy intimate shows. Can't wait for another show here! read more

Hubby and I went to see a punk show here (first timers), and it was an incredibly great experience. We took Lyft there- it was easy to find if you knew the address and what you were looking for, however there was no sign that said "PhilaMOCA" outside. We just saw a bunch of people standing outside and new thats where the show was going to be. Inside seemed pretty small, but halfway through the show I realized how many people actually fit in the space and I was pretty impressed. It wasn't overcrowded, just a little cozy. It got hot by the end of the night, but most concert venues I've been to seem to do so. The old Mausoleum was a pretty interesting building, and I later went home to read up on its history- pretty sweet! I'd definitely go here for another show- the whole vibe of the place was just perfect! read more

We went to PhilaMOCA for the screaming females show on 4/8. It was a Monday night but was still very busy. It's a very small venue to see your favorite musicians pretty close up. Cheap beer and they were even selling ear plugs. How considerate. We had a great night out at PhilaMOCA and will definitely check out their future schedules. read more

This place is super chillllll !!!! I really like the DYI vibe that this place exudes. They have some art on the walls and some couches along the small balcony that you can slide into if your there early enough. The stage is small and the place is pretty small as well, so wherever you are you'll have a great view. The sound system is fantastic too. They also have a small beer selection at budget prices, and the crowd is for the most part well behaved. I'd definitely come here again and plan too soon as i have tix for Death of Lovers which i cant wait to see. The show i did catch was Balmorhea, and i strongly recommend seeing them if your reading this !!!! read more

Came here to see a burlesque show, which was my first time at PhilaMOCA. First things first: what you're looking for when you get there is a large stone building that says "Mausoleum" on the front. There is no "PhilaMOCA" signage. It definitely helps if you make sure to write down the street address so you'll be sure to find it. The venue itself is on the cozy side. With floor and balcony totally packed out, I would say that it fits about 150 or 175 people, max, if seats are set up. A few more, I suppose, if it's standing room only. So if you're coming to see a show here, definitely err on the side of getting your tickets in advance. All of the seating filled up quickly and plenty of folks stood the entire night. If you need to make sure you'll have a seat, I would definitely suggest getting to the venue a little early before doors open for your event. The burlesque show I saw sold VIP tickets that guaranteed first- or second-row seating. My friends and I didn't end up getting those, but next time if that option were available I would probably go ahead and spring for it, although we did get seats. It's an indie space, a little rough around the edges but not without its charms. The stage was elevated and there were decent sightlines even from way in the back. I doubt there's really a terrible seat in the house. Seating was folding chairs in rows, but they were comfy ones, with roomy seat-width and slightly reclined backs. A little bar was set up, where drinks were sold at rock-bottom prices--cans of beer for $2 and cans of soda for $1. Can't think of the last time I went to a venue with such miniscule prices on refreshments. The bathroom was clean and spacious. Framed advertisements and brochures from the building's mausoleum days hung on the wall next to the mirror, which was a very cool touch. Only drawback on the bathroom is that there is just one facility, so the line gets long. The sound system was decent, although there was a little distortion when the music was cranked up more loudly. There are some drawbacks. If there is a cooling system in the place, it was not in evidence. The only way fresh air was brought in was by opening the front door during the intermission. 175 people packed close together in an un-air-conditioned and only intermittently-ventilated mausoleum on a steamy Philadelphia night... well, you do the math. I'm also just a little too old to take fire codes as lightly as it seems to me the folks at the doors did. With the place totally packed out, there was no clear path of egress left. Venue and organizers need to be a little more firm on making sure there's a safe way to exit the venue in case of emergency, even if that means some would-be audience members are disappointed, sadly. That said, I think it's very cool that we have places like this in Philly. They're sorely needed to provide places for artists and art-lovers to come together. And heck, I'm going to go ahead and guess that turning a mausoleum into a viable arts-and-music venue is not easy. Kudos to the folks at PhilaMOCA, and I look forward to seeing how the space evolves in the future. read more

This is a really great, unique space that is host to all kinds of off-beat and underground artsy fartsy stuff that you're not gonna find a lot of other places. Yes, it's a bit small, but it's size is well suited to the somewhat niche performances and events that run here. Indie Burlesque shows, local film screenings, variety shows, and the first Philadelphia Podcast Festival. Could do with a better "backstage/dressing" area for talent and performers, but they seem to make it work. What I love most about this place is that I never know who I am going to run into there. I actually like the old furniture and the folding chairs. It keeps the space feeling more improvised and mobile. I really enjoy attending events here. read more

My husband and I were the first couple to have our wedding at PhilaMoca (well a wedding reception, we eloped two months prior). The space was perfect for what we wanted -edgy, but beautiful in a unique way. Eric, though this isn't a typical wedding venue when above and beyond with helping us with our event. (Little Sean too!) It was a great night and I recommend this venue to anyone. Just pleas make your vendors aware Eric runs the show solo and isn't there full time; they're going to have to be patient! read more

I enjoy going to events at PhilaMOCA. I've seen a few films here and they had ample seating, nice screen, and good sound. The place could be in a better area and the atmosphere could be worked on, but that doesn't stop me from going to events there. The staff is friendly and knowledgable. read more

Have been here several times over the last year for events including a Mitch Hedberg tribute and a diverse array of quirky film screenings and concerts. Caught a Serengeti show here: small, open space with high ceilings. Appreciated the art-covered walls and cheap drinks. It's a bit tricky to find, make sure you write down the address because our cab driver had no idea where it was and it doesn't look much like a venue from the outside. read more

I really had no idea what I was getting into when my girlfriend and I headed to PhilaMOCA for a showing of The Past is a Grotesque Animal, a documentary about my favorite band of Montreal. I was really expecting a big art museum so as we were walking down 12th street trying to find the place I was so confused. Once inside it was a large open room with very high ceilings. There were a couple of prints around the walls and a really neat neon display of an alternate planet in the corner. So the place was totally different than I was expecting but had an open and welcoming atmosphere. I am excited to check out more of what the PhilaMOCA has to offer! read more

I have been here for a few small shows and movie presentations, and this place is awesome! I enjoy the intimate atmosphere when you see a live band there. The tickets for the band's are usually modestly priced. Also, they got you covered on water and soda as a small donation if thirsty, so that helps due to how warm it gets when packed. This probably will always be the best DIY venue in Philly! read more

Why is every event here poorly attended? Every time I decide to give PhilaMOCA another chance and go to an event, I'm super disappointed by the lack of preparation. Some examples: -The David Lynch event last year was awkward. the acts were weak and the event was attended by apathetic people. -The recent short film festival was attended solely by the amateur directors. Kind of pathetic. -concert after concert consists of the band and their girlfriends.... Potential, but someone here is screwing up. read more

I agree with some other reviewers that this place has a cozy atmosphere and the stage is easily seen from pretty much anywhere in the place, which is cool. A few issues though. The bathroom is a problem. There is only one.....not one room with several stalls - ONE TOILET. I actually was behind the bassist for the band i came to see when in line for the bathroom and she confirmed that there is no toilet backstage either. The place is also very poorly ventilated. I was there on a pretty chilly night and it was so hot in the venue that I was getting faint. For general admission shows, other than a couple of small couches in the balcony, there is nowhere to sit and everyone is packed in pretty tight, so if you need to rest your feet or get some air, your out of luck. read more

What a morbidly cool location for a gig! Or perhaps so, depending on whom you are. If you can tolerate next to no seating, a rather tight space, and the PPD acting on noise complaints by the neighbors, then you will dig this joint. This once housed a mortuary, it had creepy vibes, and equally morbid art work about the interiors 25 foot high walls. A make shift stage located to the left when yo first enter this location, with decent sound, some occasional feedback. I enjoyed the Nik Turner gig their last night, it was very organic. The ideal location for that eccentric space rock gig. The neighborhood is in transition, we saw a dude trying various parked cars doors, to see if he could enter apparently. Obviously, lock your car doors when there!!!! The employes there were way cool, and ales were cost-effective at only $2.00 for a Yuengling, nice! The place was relatively clean and felt cozy for a former mortuary. I'd definitely catch another cool gig there in time. read more

This venue is terrible. It is small, dingy, poorly lit, and has no seating. It looks nothing like the website picture. We went to see Fishtank Ensemble there on 9/12. PhilaMOCA had not promoted the band and we were the only people in the audience. The show was canceled. PhilaMOCA is in a great location and has potential, but the management needs to get its act together. read more

From my few trips to the City of Brotherly Love, I've surmised that much of the city is cramped beyond belief and comfort alike, but I'm happy to report that PhilaMOCA has actively negated my first, second, and third impressions of Philadelphia. PhilaMOCA is somehow spacious AND cozy, making it easy to forget that you're standing inside the shell of a mausoleum, at least in name.
