It's got everything you could want in a car park and more. Let me break it down for ya. - €3/hour parking - cheapest I've found in the city centre so far. (the search continues...) - Really wide drives / roads / paths (what are they called in car parks?!!) - Lots of space within the individual parks - You can stick your credit card in when you enter, and again at the end, which means you never need to queue at those blasted machines again, or lose your ticket - Free parking for the first hour if you shop in Dunnes - If you shop in M&S, you can pull up to a specific parking bay, call down to the shop, and they'll bring your shopping straight up for you, so you don't have to do all the 'lugging' - Free buggies on loan from the customer service area in the centre if you want to ferry lazy, sorry tired, kids ;-) - Free battery charging service for your car, if you're a greenie electric lover - Free tyre pump service. How good is all that?! Minus points though for the following reasons: - No lovely aul fellas sitting in a little hut waitin for a chat (I salute you Trinity) - No numbers on the spaces as far as I can see. So much faster than the bus to get to Castleknock (for my AirBNB), this is a pretty standard…read morestation on the Maynooth line that follows the Royal Canal. The station has an above ground passenger footbridge to transfer to the other side. There are ticket vending machines, a turnstile to scan your ticket and some vending machines. I was here the day of a big concert at the nearby Croke Park. Lots of crowds arriving and I do not envy their departure. Mind the gap.

This stations isn't pretty, but it handles its commuter traffic very well. Unfortunately, the station is only a stone's throw from Croke Park and was clearly not built with GAA crowds in mind. Extra trains are added after games, but the station just cannot move such a tremendous number of people. The result is a dangerously dense crowd on the stairwell and the platform, with thousands of people pushing from behind. It is a wonder that the crowd doesn't surge like lemmings into the tracks.

Or perhaps it's a Jetsons style situation where we don't need to be concerned with driving into big square ledges or trying to fit our big square cars into small square spaces? My car isn't even big. It's tiny. But the space they give you in these car parks would challenge Lewis Hamilton if he was in a hurry. So anyway, IFSC car park. Too many random sharp corners to drive around, and random sharp spaces to get in. (I'm a good driver, I swear!) They also have pretty iffy signage so it's difficult to see whether you're going the right or wrong direction on a lane way. They're €3.00 / 1 hour, €5.00 / evening and €9.00 / overnight, which to be honest isn't too bad, but there doesn't seem to be any clarification anywhere just what an 'evening' constitutes of. I did like that the machine gives receipts which I've noticed doesn't happen in all car parks. And of course it's in a good location if you're looking to go out around that area of the city. Overall, it needs some tender loving care, and above all, some thought of how the customers actually uses it.

Some years ago we had a huge property boom here in Dublin followed by a massive economic crash and now we appear to be at the beginning of a different type of development boom and as a result I suspect that many old and landmark buildings will have disappeared before anyone has realised what has happened. It has taken me about ten years to discover what this building was. One of my problems was that I thought it was on Bolton Street rather than Dorset street. Bolton street is much shorter that I believed it to be despite the fact that I have lived on the street for 21 years. As you can see the building is currently surrounded by hoarding featuring the Dublin GAA colours ... usually this is a bad sign as it means that we/you are expected to support the project no matter what. If I am being unfair please let me know. Anyway I have discovered that the building was "a fine fire station designed by the city architect C.J McCarthy in 1901, this was one of a series designed by the architect in the city. The others are on Thomas Street, Tara Street and Buckingham Street. None of them are in use as fire stations today."
