I love Forquilha…read more Tonight was my first night out of 6 months in Brasil. When my husband came home from work, he listed out the regular places that we usually go when we visit Brasil. Last minute, we decided to try something new - Forquilha. I didn't know what to expect, and I'll admit it, I was a little grumpy when we first arrived. However, we were warmly greeted and were seated instantly. I saw a giant wood oven in the corner, and a colorful bar where bartenders expertly made drinks. We ordered up a Hendricks martini and a Moscow Mule. My mood instantly was on an upswing when our cocktails came. My Moscow Mule had some sort of whipped foam on top which I've never seen before. The cocktail was interesting and delicious, and I gladly ordered more throughout the evening. My husbands martini was on point - in fact, it officially ruined every other martini I've ever had, it was that smooth. For an appetizer, we ordered a flat bread stuffed with cheese and prosciutto on top. On account of my not eating meat, they kindly put the prosciutto on the side for my husband to have on his pieces only. Very thoughtful. It was delicious and eaten instantly. For entrees, we ordered the bacalhau rice and a pizza with pumpkin. While both were delicious, the bacalhau rice was especially phenomenal. I had several bites of my husbands plate and secretly wished that I had ordered it. We unfortunately did not partake in dessert, but after scouring Instagram later in the evening, I really wish I went with that Nutella tiramisu! Next time. This restaurant was a great find - friendly service, fantastic drinks and cuisine, and did I mention the music? I just about lost my mind when Breakbot came on! I loved everything about this spot, and I can't wait to go back.

Chef Mara Salles is well known for celebrating Brazil's regional cuisines, and the restaurant has earned a Bib Gourmand recognition for its quality and value. We had the option to sit inside or on the patio, and since the weather was perfect, we chose the patio. Inside looked inviting too--warm wood, white tablecloths, and a stylish bar. The service was friendly, though our server didn't speak English, which made ordering a little tricky. We used a translator app several times, which worked fine but slowed things down. The food was worth it. We started with the zucchini chips (addictive!) and quickly learned the chilies on the table are very hot--be careful. For appetizers, we had the Comissão de Frente (pastries filled with shrimp) and the Bolinho Errado com Aioli de Pequi (manioc balls with homemade cheese). Both were excellent. For mains, we tried the Bobó de Camarão, a shrimp dish in creamy manioc with coconut--rich and comforting. The Barreado, beef slow-cooked for 10 hours in a clay pot, was tender and deeply flavorful. Overall, Tordesilhas gave us a warm welcome to São Paulo dining. The food was authentic and memorable, and while the language barrier made things a little slower, it was still one of the highlights of our trip.

One which still shows up on Google. We Ubered to the old location and spent a while trying to find a restaurant that is no longer more. My Brazil guidebook touched on their lunch buffet. That is no more at the new location either. The current location is inside a museum. You have to pay admission to the museum to dine at the restaurant. Even if you have no interest in checking out the museum. Safe to say, we were off to a rocky start. Things did turn around magically, however. Admission to the museum pays to help preserve the Amazon. At least our money was going to a good cause. Sustainability is a theme here as you see sustainable materials being used throughout the restaurant. We were seated on the lovely patio which is made to recreate the Amazon with a lot of greenery and trees. I started off with a fresh juice as I looked over the menu. I ordered the pork cutlet with tomato risotto. It may have been my favorite dish on my Brazil trip. The pork was succulent and flavorful. The risotto mirrored it as the fresh tomatoes and combination of ingredients made it arguably the best risotto I've ever had. Service was good. Capim Santo is not cheap. And we ran into a couple of frustrating roadblocks. But with that being said, I can't fail to applaud the restaurant for the quality of its food and the lovely surroundings.

I used Uber to get here - the restaurant is in a quaint neighborhood. When I walked in, I literally felt like I was walking into someone's house. Upon entry, I was greeted by the friendly staff. The man who greeted me spoke English, which put me at ease. I told him that I have no clue what to order and I would try whatever he recommended - that locals would love. He pointed me to some menu options and also suggested that I half the size of my order since the food is intended for sharing. Well, even with that tip -- the portions were HUGE! The food was excellent, but plan on leaving with food to go. I posted some pictures of my meal if you'd like to see the portions. I highly recommend getting out and trying this place!

Let me just say as a disclaimer that while I was in São Paulo, I was basically just following the herd because I don't know Portuguese and I did not know anything about Brazilian food and culture prior to my trip. While dining here, my friend's mom, aunty, uncle, and cousin did all the ordering so I unfortunately don't know what most of the dishes were called in Portuguese. We got to the restaurant around 7:30pm on a Thursday. Parking is either street or valet in front of the restaurant, so plan ahead and come early if you want to find a spot on the street. Although we had a reservation for a party of 6 the restaurant was not too crowded and felt spacious. We were promptly greeted and were able to order drinks. Like everywhere else I went in Sao Paulo, getting plain old tap water is NOT an option...if you ask for water you'll get a bottle of water and a glass! My friend's grandpa ordered a caipirinha...which I had never seen or tried before. Since he only wanted a little bit, he gave me the rest of his, and after that I was hooked! I love how much lime they use (it seemed like 1/2 a lime was in that tiny glass) and how smooth the drink was! Shortly after we received our drinks, the food started coming. Although I couldn't understand anything on the menu, it was quite long with many different selections available. I hadn't realized that they ordered so many dishes, but I was excited to try a bit of everything! For appetizers, we started off with these breaded/fried poppers-type bites that were either filled with meat or cheese. The poppers were made out of a Brazilian ingredient (I think its from a vegetable root) and were perfectly crispy on the outside and soft on the inside! I tried one of each and had to restrain myself from eating more so that I could save room to try more of the main dishes. Then, one by one, the dinner dishes started coming. We ordered so many different things, it felt like constant serving for 10 minutes! Of course, we started off with rice (Brazilian rice, which has a hint of garlic, is long grain, and not sticky), white beans, and veggies (chopped kale and a mash made out of the same root the poppers were made of). First came okra and chicken in a somewhat stew-ish form. This was great...the okra was soft and the chicken tender! Next came deep fried ham hocks with fried plantain and a white bean/bread crumb mixture. I'm used to ham hocks in soups, but this was my first time eating it deep fried. And it was so good, definitely one of my favorites! The meat was not tough; even though it was deep fried, it had the texture of pulled pork on the inside. After these came Brazilian steak frites and deep fried pork rinds with a fried egg and more bean/breadcrumb mixture. The steak was good, and this was my first time trying Brazilian beef! The pork rinds were tasty, but very hard and crunchy which made it a little difficult to eat. Now the servings for each of these dishes was quite large, and even though we did this meal family style with six people, we ended up very full and with a ton of leftovers! There was a dessert menu available, but I was unfortunately too full to try anything. Obrigada, Tempero das Gerais, for giving me my first taste of Brazilian cuisine! TL;DR - large menu selection, large portions, and deep fried ham hocks!
