We met with Leslie several times, some alone and some with Dad, to interview each other to be sure that we were what she was looking for and also that it was what we were looking for for our Dad. She was very patient with us and all of our questions. At that time, we currently had an 11-year-old GSD in our own home but were interested in getting a puppy "some time in the future" as well. Leslie was gracious enough to allow my husband and myself to come "visit" with puppy litters on roughly a monthly basis to get to know her and her family and also to help socialize the puppies, five litters in total if I remember correctly. I have not previously witnessed such caring of the individual pups/litters in my 50+years of having GSDs from any breeder, and her adult dogs are just as amazing, well behaved, well mannered, and socialized. She goes to great lengths to train, title, and breed these beautiful dogs to get amazing results. We've watched several of her pups go on to train in the settings of police work, tracking, and service work for veterans. We lost our precious GSD in October 2019 at almost 12 years old, and we got our first puppy from Auf der Marquis this past Thursday after visiting with the litter almost weekly since they were born. I'm happy to report to you that he is the most amazing puppy we've ever had (not that I'm biased of course . He has a great temperament, already follows some basic commands, and is smart as a whip although he is still a 10-week old puppy and is mischievous as expected. Leslie was instrumental in helping us pick out a pup that would be suitable as we would like to train him in IGP when he gets a little older, and he has already demonstrated characteristics suitable for this type of training. He is most definitely not timid, is very curious of all his new surroundings, is not afraid of loud noises, etc. I also witnessed on several occasions her visits with other potential buyers to discuss their particular needs and wants, and she was very helpful with them making their selection of a pup to suit their own personal needs. We are not family and have no business affiliation with them, and I would most definitely recommend Auf der Marquis Kennel and Leslie Marquis as thee place to get a German Shepherd puppy in Michigan. We live over an hour drive from there, in Rockford, and wouldn't go anywhere else.

Our vet (The Visiting Vet) comes to our house for appointments, so when we knew our guy Franks had really just fought his last night with laryngeal paralysis we called her and she agreed to come over that afternoon. Our vet had already made all the arrangements, so we did not have to do any of the work, but Life Tails was truly amazing. After our vet left at 3:45, Life Tails was there by 4:05 to pick Franks up. They were so kind. I had to leave the room because I mentally just could not handle him being taken away, but Mr. MVP said they were very super gentle and made a funny and very helpful comment on how amazing Franks coat is (the gentleman thought Franks was all hair, but this made Mr. MVP laugh because Franks was BIG - 75 pounds big). Life Tails called us just two days later and we were able to pick Franks back up. He came back to us in a wooden box that suits Franks really well. We have used other cremation services in the past and have ended up buying other pottery or boxes, but this box does Franks proud. Some non-pet people may think pet cremation is crazy, but until you have loved and been loved by a dog for 12 years you will not understand how painful it is to have a four legged family member die. Our experience occurred in December 2025 and I needed that time before I wrote my review…read more We were clients of Nickerson for over 20 years and even though the costs of using them were climbing, we stayed loyal. But then Dr Almus sold the business to a company called National Veterinary Associates (NVA). Once they purchased the practice that's when we noticed the cost of getting our pets taken care of started to rise even more and certain services being cut. Yet, we stayed loyal. The last straw so to speak was last December (2025). First off, three different vets misdiagnosed our cat for numerous months. Then, because Nickerson was listed as having a USDA veterinarian and we needed our two cats to have a specific health form filled out for international travel. With everything going on at that time, I was pretty sure that this step was going to be a non issue and these forms needed to be filled out within a certain time frame before traveling internationally. So I call to make the appointment and was advised that the person I had the plans with had been 'let go' and no longer worked there. When I brought up the fact that I needed the forms filled out by Dr. Merle, I was advised that they would call back in a couple of days after their staff meeting with corporate. No one called back, so I did and was advised that they are no longer offering that service. (Mind you, getting two cats this official health report/paperwork is NOT inexpensive.) I immediately requested that they email my records for our two cats to me as soon as possible, which they did. I quickly got online and found that St Joseph Animal Wellness had USDA certified vets and called them. They were amazingly helpful and kind, got our cats in, properly diagnosed our one cat, and they were able to get us our health certificates within the proper timeframe that we needed. My advise for anyone in the southwest Michigan area is support your locally owned veterinarian clinic/health centers for your pets. Vet care for our pets is already getting really costly, no need to line the pocket of some faceless corporation who doesn't really care about your pets or situation.
