We moved from Beijing to LA in 2017, around April 2017 my wife and I did a house hunting at PV and…read moreTorrance. After looking at several houses for sales, I asked my realtor to drop me off at the ice rink which is my daughter's most favorite activity. We passed by the Peninsula Academy. I told my wife this is a great place for our daughter to enrich her English. Kay Lee, the deputy director of the academy was there, she was extremely helpful and listened to me on our needs. She recommended Kathy Kerstein as my daughter's English teacher. We moved our family on July 28, 2017. It's a Friday. My daughter Yiyi started Kathy's one to one class for the whole summer and once-twice a week during the school year. Apparently, she did extremely good at her ENGLISH LEARNER'S class. She moved on with Kathy's help, she got into Stanford's summer school, UCSB Research Mentoring Program. From a Chinese speaking little girl, hardly can speak a full paragraph to a young adult commanding her English In three and half years. My daughter, applied for colleges this year, she got admitted for UC Berkeley, UCLA, UC Santa Barbara, UCSD. For private institutions, she got Harvey Mudd (finalist for President's Scholarship, she declined), Columbia University and Caltech. She accepted the offer from Caltech and will be the 2025 class of Caltech. Kathy Kerstein is a great teacher, she is always available and ready to help, I would like to thank the Academy for all the supports. Chung

Ellie was great for helping me with my college apps. I didn't know what where or how to even…read morebegin, so she walked me through the whole process. She helped me make (and later narrow down) my college list; she also knew about a lot of colleges I never thought about or even heard of. She was also a huge help with my essays: she helped me think of topics that would appeal to admissions officers, guided me through the writing process (like what was/wasn't appropriate to put on the essay, how to make the essay more compelling, etc.), and gave me tips and feedback on how to better my essay. I felt like she really got to know me and helped me to differentiate myself from other applicants and show admissions who I really am. Thanks to her, I was accepted into UC Berkeley!!! Seriously, A+++, 5 thumbs up, 17/10, 8 stars. I couldn't be more thrilled with not only the results but the time I spent with her working on my apps. She made the whole process as painless as possible.

Although her tutoring is online, it wasn't awkward at all. It was actually more convenient due to the flexibility. Thanks Ellie!!! My teacher actually commented on my improvement in class :) it made me feel so much better about my science grades. If I ever need help again in any subject (that Ellie tutors in), I'd definitely work with her again.

Coming from an 8th grade student going here, this school is actually fun if you remove all the…read morestaff that embarrass you. And perhaps all the students. Like it's my first year here and oh my god I was so embarrassed the whole time. PE was the worst actually, this is one of my many reasons for hating this class. As a lot of people know living here know, California had this major heatwave that brought temperatures up to 100 degrees. While we did stay in the gym the whole time, we were required to stand out in the sun for five-ish minutes before the end of class. Now, thinking it was fine to stand in the shade for such a short amount of time, I went over by the trees near the girls locker room (which is literally RIGHT IN FRONT of the line that we're supposed to stand in). There were other girls doing the same too, so I thought it was fine to follow them. I got called over by a teacher, saying that we couldn't stand there because the teachers 'couldn't see us' if we did. I was like, okay, cool, I won't do that next time then. But then the teacher was pressing me, asking me why I didn't stand with the rest of the class, acting like there was some major lecture that defined my entire middle school grade. You could just, you know, SAY I couldn't stand there.. BUT NAHHHH YOU JUST GOTTA ASK WHY IM TRYING TO STAND IN THE SHADE WHEN IT'S 105 DEGREES OUT YEAHH! I told her the sun was burning my back and that I was feeling dizzy, and she said something like 'All the other students are dealing with it, just figure it out.' .................... I TRIED to 'figure it out' and you overreacted, but like that's just how it is apparently. Not to mention how boring the school is if you weren't there for the entirety of middle school. I am not a social person, so it's obviously going to be hard for me to fit in with other girls who've known each other for years. Maybe it's my fault that I don't try to talk with them, so don't take this part too seriously. If you're a social person, then yeah, go here. They have inside jokes I don't really understand and tendencies to hold hands with their friends which is kinda nice. But honestly, if the 'magnet' or 'gifted' part of the school is what draws you in, don't bother. I thought I would be put in a class with people that have more than half a brain, but nah, it's just your average school with loud and unattractive boys (sometimes girls) who don't know how to read. Also, there was a fight last week. But there were some teachers at this school who made my weeks here a little more brighter. Mr. R, teaches ethnic studies, really chill dude, overall his class is a vibe if you do your work. I can't emphasize enough on how he helped me through my time here, he's like his own 5 star review. Mr. K, one of the math teachers there, is actually really helpful and funny. I don't like expressing emotions a lot during school, but I can't suppress a smile in his class. Same with Mr. H (history teacher)!! And I can't say a lot since I haven't been there, but they have so many classes and clubs from what I've heard! They have classes about cooking, Mandarin, and instruments (I forgot which one)!! They also have activities during lunch, things like anime club and knitting/crochet (that's all for now since it's still the first few weeks). But yeah, this is a lot to read, so my bad. I am transferring out of this school next week, yet all the fun experiences here that I couldn't try yet made me a little reluctant to leave.

Let's not forget about the little boy who died on campus in 2018, he was in 6th grade and I was in…read more8th, back then they'd make us all run laps around the entire grass field, despite the 100° summers. My class (PE) was doing something on the basketball court while his class was doing the mile run on the field. I remember seeing him lying on the floor from afar, he was left unattended the entire time!!! Near the end of the school day the ambulance finally came, and the next day all the students were talking about how he was pronounced deceased. I cannot even begin to discuss how disgusting and unworthy those "teachers" were. They don't even deserve that label. He was only 12 years old!!! They didn't supply us with any water, or even cared to make sure any of us had any food. There's 4 water fountains that would get packed with over 20 students, and most of the time water wouldn't even come out... so you'd have to French kiss the faucet. Gross. I'm sure they don't have the same teachers and staff as I did, but this school is really bad. But Dana was worse. If I had a child I would seriously drive the extra miles to put them anywhere but here. I also got relentlessly harassed because I lived in San Pedro, there's many students from a ton of different city's... but again, not sure how it is anymore but my experience was bad.
