I was here working out this evening & right at 9pm (closing), the worker turned all of the lights…read moreoff with 2 customers still in the building, myself included. No mention of it being closing time, just lights off, time to go! On my way out, I asked him, "Do you have somewhere to be?" & that he "shouldn't turn the lights out with customers still inside." His response- "It's 9 o'clock." Which I responded, "Are you the owner?" & he responded "Yes." If this is the case, that the OWNER doesn't care about his customer's experience, I will for sure be taking my business elsewhere. I'm not sure where he was taught that his schedule getting out of work was more important than the paying customer's experience. As somebody who has worked in customer service my entire adult life (not to mention at this same gym 7 years ago), that's a foreign concept to me. As a manager or GM, if I found out my employees were putting themselves above the customers in this way, they'd be written up or let go. My advice? Do better. The BARE MINIMUM is you wait to close until everyone is gone. & if it gets to be 5-10mins after, you politely let the customers know you are closed & need to start closing. Customer Service 101, Day 1. If management, or (apparently) ownership encourages this type of customer service, it's no wonder places like Crunch Fitness & Victory Sports have taken what looks to be most of the business from East Coast.

It costs only $5 more per month and offers a variety of activities and (free) courses; take advantage of the pools, rock climbing walls, yoga sessions, basketball and volleyball courts etc. It has much more of a community feel to it, to boot. Plus, I think we can all agree on the fact that Hamilton Plaza -- for some reason or another -- has become a rather depressing spot nowadays...am I right, or am I right?

The staff and owner are super nice, and the facility is immaculate. That's right: I'm saying there's no stale stinky gym smell. Most important, the workout routines are short, focused, and very effective. They build on computer-based training and have all kinds of charts and education, should you want that. I love how the program tells me how many pounds I've lifted and charts my improvement in muscle mass and other cool stuff.

I cannot speak to the current condition of all the others, but the State College Y is easily in the best material condition of any Y in my life. Everything seems to have been refurbished or replaced recently, no broken down anything, no roof leaks, no broken tiles or pavement. .is this really a Y? They just finished redoing the locker rooms, new everything as far as I can tell. The Therapy pool is a balmy 90F, which is great for a recent Miami transplant, and the lap pool is a not too shabby 80F. Pickleball seems to have taken over the basketball courts but that is the way of things now i guess. All the resistance and exercise equipment are there, maybe not the best but very functional...and helpful staff nearby. It's nice to what was old is now new.

The gym was practically empty when we arrived around 9 am on Black Friday which was fantastic! I have a feeling they get crowded during a regular in-session week. The gym and equipment all felt fairly new. The layout was intuitive and the bathroom was a helluva lot better than the PF near my house. They also had a bunch of Smith Machines available (the ones at my gym are always taken) so I very much enjoyed not having to wait. Overall, for the price and quality of the facilities you can't go wrong here!

I mention this because upon moving to Philly I had very high expectations about who I would find to put me into the state of bliss that only accupuncture seems to accomplish. I tried a random place in CC...the experience was ok, but not enough to keep me going back. I thank my West Philly stars that I found Matt! I appreciate the way he means it when he asks how I am doing, and I love the way he uses this information to be inspired for the best treatment possible. He is responsive to feedback about the treatments and observant about how they feel. I can imagine he would be great with people new to accupuncture as he is calm, reassuring, and knowledgeable about what he is doing. If you have wanted to try accupuncture but have always made up excuses, STOP! Go see Matt. Wait a week, repeat.
