I get overwhelmed at the bigger farmers' markets, so I appreciate the smaller ones like this…read moreThursday Vet's Garden one and the Sunday farmers' market behind the public library on Santa Monica Blvd and Purdue. This one is great for so many reasons: * SUPER plentiful parking in the lot * Late hours (Thursdays 12-6) * Never crowded * Yummy food booths (pupusas, tamales, Grill Masters chicken and roasted potatoes, roasted corn with toppings) My fave vendors are: * the Korean family with apples/avocados/fresh and DRIED persimmons (yum - like natural gumdrops!) * the Japanese lady with a multitude of produce (corn, heirloom tomatoes, zucchini with the blossoms still on, onions, yams, kohlrabi, green onions, carrots, lettuces, herbs, cucumbers - really anything I need!) * the berries and dried fruits and nuts vendor - strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, cherries, and dried fruits and nuts by the pound * the citrus guy - grapefruits, lemons, sweet lemons, oranges, etc. The French vendor has some DELISH looking pastries and fresh made pastas, but since I'm watching the carbs - I sadly stay away : (. The Greek lady has GREAT moussaka, olives, baklava, and other yummies. There's always interesting stuff to browse too - jewelry, clothing, vases, etc. One of my fave things to do after I get my awesome produce is to visit the BIRD SANCTUARY that's accessible by walking through the Vet's Garden! The bird sanctuary is a GINORMOUS haven for dozens of cockatoos, red and blue macaws, african greys, and other smaller birds like ring-necked parakeets. Cover your ears, because they can be raucous!! The birds are HILARIOUS with their differing personalities: * the african grey that loves to sing songs (happy birthday, take me out to the ballgame, etc.) * Lola, the blue macaw who LOVES women with long, dark hair but HATES men. Lola coos googly-eyed at me and lunges and hisses at bf, LOL!! So get some of the yummy food from one of the booths, sit under the big tree at one of the picnic tables, walk through the Vet's Garden, visit the birdies, and bring some farm-fresh produce home this Thursday!

I enjoyed delicious pupusas and fresh strawberry lemonade here. I loved the strawberry lemonade. It is refreshing, sweet and had a lot of pulp. I love having pulp in my lemonade -- it just adds to the refreshing feel of it! I cannot remember which vendor it was from but I saw several people walking around with it and just tried to figure out where they were coming from. Besides, the market is small and it wasn't that difficult. I would definitely return if I was in the area. I appreciate the charm and relaxing experience of sampling food, walking around with friends, and enjoying great food while sitting down at a picnic table in a small garden. You will probably have to share tables with strangers but everyone is friendly there! Parking is also really abundant here.

The vegan cookie chick has scrumptious cookies. And offers so much samples to make you want to buy more. Always love a passion fruit agua Fresca this time of year... or any time of the year. The stand owners are always very nice and welcoming. There is definitely enough space to walk around and peruse, plus being hidden from the noise of the city in its quasi hidden location... but with some nice sunshine is always a plus!

The only thing I don't like…read moreabout here is many of the stands don't have small things you can get to try a little bit of each which sucks because then you're forced to decide on one. Many restaurants, stands, trucks, should always have options especially small, cheaper options so if customers like something, they can come back and try the rest. So, the fish tacos are really good. And the spam musubi is really good. This have been my favorites here. I haven't had a chance to try the dim sum or the Hawaiian BBQ. I've tried pupusa, taco/burrito/chicken teriyaki/sushi and honestly nothing about them stand out because it tastes like what you can get anywhere I had the Korean BBQ and damn I was so disappointed because I love Korean BBQ and every place I've had Korean BBQ bowls were good. If you do come to the Korean BBQ stand, get the spicy pork belly, because the spicy chicken wasn't Anything special But the fish tacos is a must and the spam musubi was DAMN good. I was shocked because I hate spam but the way Hawaiian spam musubi is made is really really good

The Farmers Market happens every Sunday from 8am to 1pm You can park for free for 2 hours in the Civic Center parking garage, enter off Rexford Drive. There has been plenty of parking every time I've gone, but the lower levels get filled up quickly. Just drive up a bit and you'll find a ton of spots. The only negative I can find of this Farmers Market is they need more seating. It's not wild because we always end up walking down the stairs by the police station/parking garage to eat whatever we purchase fresh. However it would be nice if they added some more tables by the live band to enjoy the market fully. That being said - Some highlights of the market: ~Live music! They need more tables and seats around the concert area but it is nice they have the live music. ~Crustee's! I love their pot pies! Highly recommended. ~Berry's Berries is a popular spot! Their strawberry juice is great and I grabbed a $6 bottle every time I've been there. ~Beverly Hills Cookies is great if you want some baked goodies to go. ~Several places sell freshly cut flower bunches for $10~15 which is perfect. I've bought an orchid from one vendor one week and a fresh bouquet another week. ~King's Road Coffee is where I have gotten my morning fix every week. ~Black Cat BBQ has friendly staff and delicious eats! ~Petting Zoo with the most adorable funny looking ducks, baby goats, baby rabbits, baby everything...ahhhhh, it's so darn cute. ~Every 3rd Sunday they have some extra crafting tables for kids.

I don't know how they turn a profit, sometimes it feels like they're just giving produce away. Pineapple $1.50 each, tomatoes 6 for $1, large tricolor bell pepper 3 for $1, a pint of strawberries $1, asparagus $1, all stone fruit 6 for $1! And prices decrease as the day progresses. Come around 3PM and prices are slashed even further. The quality of the produce can be hit or miss depending on the item, but it is generally exceptional. I recently purchased a pineapple whose sweetness rivaled ones I've eaten freshly-picked at a farm in Hawaii. They also sell dried goods as well as frozen fish, including tilapia, scallops and several varieties of salmon. All fresh, all at great prices (cheaper than what you'd pay at a traditional market). I'm so pleased that this farmer's market is so centrally located on the VA WLA campus, giving veterans and employees access to fresh and cheap produce!

The later you go, the cheaper it gets, but the best stuff may start to run out. Despite this, I go towards the tail end (4-5pm), when they start bagging up lots of produce and selling each bag for $1. Amazing. You can seriously get all your veggies here for the week for under $10. They have seasonal fruits, all type of veggies, potatoes, tomatoes. They sell avocados, raspberries, strawberries, mangoes, watermelons, and cantaloupe. This is by no means an exhaustive list. They also sell frozen fish, which I've had, and is a phenomenal deal. After having shopped here 10 times at least, as well as many other Farmer's Markets, this is one is cheaper by at least 60%. Try getting 10 Haas avocados for $1. Crazy. In any case, the person who runs it is really really nice, and if you're nice, he'll offer you special deals on stuff. Remember, you're getting a steal, so not everything will be as pretty as what's laid out at Whole Foods. It's just as flavorful though! One word of caution. For some of the more perishable fruits, you should eat it within 2-3 days. Otherwise they start to go bad. For me, this is a sign of fresh fruit without the chemicals and preservatives. Definitely check it out. It's quite small, but you will save a ton by buying from here. Parking in the adjacent VA parking lot is free and no one comes around the check. This place takes credit cards.

Good Box Organics is not only convenient, with the food being delivered right to my door, but is entirely healthy as well. The owners Samantha and Mark started this business in 2010 and have a mission of creating a healthier future. The best part is they work with local farmers to get all their produce and find multiple ways to give back to the community. They also have their Support a School program where they donate 5% back from every box sold. They have different boxes to choose from and different sizes as well. Some boxes are fruits only and others include fruits and vegetables. I went with the half size fruit and vegetable box. Before delivery, you get an email of what is going to be inside the box and the best part for me is, it includes recipes of what you can make with the items in your box. My box included an avocado, pears, apples, oranges, broccoli, cilantro, pink chard, and lettuce. One of the recipes included Baked Broccoli Parmesan Fritters which I am definitely going to try out because I always need new ideas for meals with having two small children. The delivery fee for their boxes is $6.95 or you can pick up the boxes for free at many of their local pickup locations. The service area covers the greater Los Angeles Area , San Fernando Valley, Pasadena, and Conejo Valley so definitely something for everyone!

For the first time ever, I took on the daunting task of cooking an entire Thanksgiving meal by…read moremyself. 10 sides and a turkey were to be created all in one day. After hours of food network/cooking channel TiVo recordings, scours of foodie websites, a stack of printed recipes and even a timeline spreadsheet to best coordinate cooking times and temperatures in my single oven, left me one decision: the turkey. Sure I could have hit the local supermarket like many do, but I wanted something special to commemorate my first foray into the Turkey day holiday. Enter Twitter. A single post seeking free-range and organic Turkey sources to my 800+ followers turned up a lot of the usual. Gelson's. Whole Foods. etc. But there was one that stood out: a tweet from Farmer's Market Fairy. Linda stated she could procure anything I desired. Being that my needs were specific (unfrozen, un-brined, free range, organic and butchered into a whole breast, separate thighs/drums/wings) I felt this would be an option that would get me exactly what I wanted and in a timely fashion. After a couple DM's on twitter and some follow up emails, all was arranged. Linda, was knowledgeable, efficient and able to get me my bird that same day. She met me at my place in Downtown (near to where she lives/operates). The bird was exactly what I asked for and very reasonably priced and I never had to leave my place. She even gave me some info on the source of the bird (great fodder to relay to guests). The turkey ended up being amazing. Amazing taste, and thankfully my preparation went off with out a hitch. Quotes from guests proclaimed the best Turkey they ever had and that it almost tasted like a fine steak because it was so rich. Thanks Farmer's Market Fairy!!
