Handy general store to pick up a few supplies, snacks, and produce. Not densely stocked but they have a good variety. The lovely surprise at this place? -- The fried oysters and chips! The oysters were scrumptious with their delicate flavored nicely complemented in a very light batter. 6 oysters and chips at $10 NZD was reasonable. read more

The general store in Puhoi is as much of a service to the locals, as it is a tourist attraction in its own right. As you enter the store you immediately get the impression that not much have changed over the last hundred years. Almost everything in the store is displayed like they used to in general stores of old, but the products are fresh. Whenever I stay in Puhoi for the weekend I come down to the store to get fresh bread and local coffee. The store also stocks a good variety of products from local manufacturers, with my personal favourite being the mustard selection from Mustardmakers. Damn, that apricot mustard is good. read more

We stopped at Puhoi on the way from Auckland to the Bay of Islands. It is north of Auckland, just past the end of the tollway, about two kilometres off the main road. Our small group stopped for coffee and cakes and a short break on the over three hundred kilometre trip up to Paihia. The coffee was great, hot and strong. The little cakes and pastries were just the thing for morning tea. There is a set of tables and benches outside for patrons to sit in the sun and enjoy this quiet little village. It is worth the stop if you need a breather on the trip north from Auckland. The village is picturesque, quiet and sits next to a beautiful, slow running river. Very serene. read more

While visiting the lovely village of Puhoi in New Zealand, I stopped in the town's eponymous General Store. I picked up a few items, brought them to the register, and a male cashier rang them up--about NZ$60. I paid with my credit card. No sooner had the charge gone through and the slip printed out, did the cashier claim he forget to add a processing fee for using a credit card. He said he would void the first transaction and put the charge through again with the fee included. I was dubious about the process and said to him that it did not appear that he had voided the first payment. He assured me that he had, and I had little recourse but accept his claim. But several weeks later, when my credit card statement showed up in the mail, both charges were included, with no reversal of the first erroneous charge. Sixty dollars is a relatively insignificant amount of money, but it pissed me off that after all his assurances, he did not void the mistaken charge. I am now of the belief that this tactic was deliberate, that the cashier recognized me as a tourist who would likely never be back again, and pegged me therefore as a suitable mark for his scam. I have notified my credit card company of the fraudulent charge and have requested a reversal. My advice to future potential customers of Puhoi General Store: 1) Avoid this place. 2) If you must shop there, watch carefully what is rung up, and pay only with cash. read more

Visited the General store today, looking forward to trying the oysters and chips, the interior of the store looked just like that, a store, around the outside under a terrace was a seating area where people were eating, the was a member of staff there clearing tables, and I asked " do we order food here or at the counter" and the very belligerent response was "Well you don't order them here do you" at which point we turned around and left. But once outside, I thought, No, I am going to complain, so re-entered the store, and was met by the same person, and when I asked to see the manager was told, your looking at him. I asked him why he was being so rude, and he said I was upsetting other shoppers and if I didn't leave he would call the police!!?, I wish I had stayed and let him explain why he was wasting their time. All in all, not a very good example of Kiwi hospitality, we have flown half way round the world, and a little civility, especially in the service industry is not too much to ask for. read more

Not good. Well, good at first until I realised how bad the service is when something goes wrong. As a customer I was not believed and shouted at over the phone by the manager of the store who said I was wrong. We bought 3KG of honey there before, and it was fine, so we drove back to get another for our friends who were coming to NZ. When we opened it, it looked strange. We know what honey is supposed to look like and taste like. We used to be beekeepers. However, I was shouted at over the phone. The same repeating sentences. "THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH OUR HONEY, YOU CAN DRIVE BACK TO OUR SHOP AND SHOW US. WE HAVE BEEN IN BUSINESS FOR BLAH BLAH AND NOTHING HAS EVER GONE WRONG, WE SEND OUR FAMOUS HONEY AROUND NZ..." I held the phone away from me and stopped listening. That's how bad it was. I don't like to be shouted at over the phone. I offered to show her pictures of the horrible wax we bought. 3KG of honey dregs, leftovers, rubbish. We were offered a small pot of honey, $12 pot, probably 250g or so, as compensation. No thank you. That doesn't do it. Just.... so bad. The honey is going to be fed to the birds. It is not for human consumption, at all. read more
