Santoña is a charming little town. We came here in April during Covid-19 and there were pretty much no international visitors. But the locals bring this town to life, especially in the evenings. Lots of friendly laid-back folks here. Nice little town center and fantastic food. And the best Anchovies (Anchoas) you will ever eat in your life.
It's the main business here, fishing the Anchoas and then put them in tin cans in one of the many many factories on site (try the brand "La Machina").
The port is where all the boats and ships are based. It's a nice little port, pretty quiet in the afternoons and evening. But it's a great place for a stroll, no matter what time of the day. It's also always safe here. There's always families around and people walking their dogs. Santoña just seems so much of a happy little place to live.
Right at the Puerto is also the Mirador del Puerto with its impressive restaurant (made to look like a ship). And then there's the Plaza De Toros De Santoña at the southern end. Right next to the Mirador del Puerto is also a great free parking lot. Looks a bit dark and shady, but we always parked here. Never had any problems, even at night.
The port looks also very beautiful when the sun goes down. With the green hills in the back it looks like a different country, you wouldn't guess it's Spain. That's just the charm of the North of Spain. So many different landscapes.
A great little town with a wonderful port to visit. read more
