I've just moved here and as an avid cook I wanted to befriend a good local butcher…read more Well, these guys didn't disappoint. From having a 5 min healthy discussion on preferences of wing-tip sirloin and ribs of beef I was given a sneeky peep round the back. These guys provide the beef for the best steak places in Glasgow. I'd eaten at one of them earlier in the week and my eyes were bulging at the trays of chateaubriands and rib in sirloins. So, as you'd expect, their meat is very well sourced and as good as you're going to get anywhere. I took a1kg 1rib Angus and pan roasted it in butter and wilted rosemary to get a good sear, then a quick 15 mins in the oven. I had it sat on some roasted beetroot puree with a port, wine and fresh beef stock reduction and the beef was some of the best I've ever eaten. Superb quality and ageing. Week after I wanted a lamb rump as I had the hunger for some dauphinoise. They were happy just to prep some up straight away, no fuss. The lamb was delicious........as was the dauph ;) ........and the sausages. Get the Italian fennel ones and slow cook cook them in your tomato sauce for pasta. Very, very impressive. Prices are as you'd expect for meat of this quality. Look on the window for weekly £10 deals. Steak and chicken. Well worth it.

Walk by often enough, but was compelled to go in today noticing the £10 offer which includes 2 sirloin steaks, 2 pork loins, 4 steak lorne sausages and 4 pork sausages. And if that doesn't make you want to go as well, you're either a vegetarian, or just plain ole crazy (yes, those are different). Nice decor, welcoming, with a good layout and professional staff. Excellent selection of all sorts, including lamb burgers that are absolutely getting destroyed next visit. Delighted with my purchase today and will return. Enough said.

The best thing about this butchers is the value for money. Not only are you sold superior goods, but at normal prices - why would you buy meat elsewhere? I cannot recommend this shop more highly and it is well worth a visit.

I've never seen a butchers in my whole life this busy and this is because it is a very good butchers, especially when you consider it in terms of value for money. Prices start at just over £3 per kilo for ribs and the first boneless item comes in at just under £4 per kilo for some pork shoulder. As you move up the quality of the meat the price remains very good value for money as it moves up with the quality and this is what makes this place so popular. I've recently purchased a sous vide machine so anything that can be slow cooked for hours is going from Crombie's butcher straight into my machine for hours on end. If you mention this place to any self respecting Edinburgh carnivore, they should acknowledge you with a contented sigh ("ahhhh, Crombie's") and a wistful look in their eye. Their sausages are widely regarded as amongst the best in the UK and they supply lots of local restaurants with them to keep the punters happy. There are many different varieties to choose from and they range from the traditional (pork, chipolatas, Scotch beef) to the exotic (boar, pork and stilton is an inspired and tasty combination). Asides from sausages, they do the usual butcher cuts of meat (steaks, lamb etc) and meals for you to heat at home if you can't be bothered cooking. Most of the meat is locally sourced and everything is incredibly good quality. It's just a shame that they close at 5.30pm, far too early for those of us with office jobs.
Plenty of sausages to choose from.

Being Gluten Free, my unhealthy world was somewhat limited until the move to the Burgh. Yes Findlay's, the saviour of my hangover's, I love you! From mucho varieties of sausage (herby, plain, pork, beef, Italian, Spanish just to name a few) to white and black puddings and haggis, there are lots of options for the gluten free gourmet. Have tried four varieties of the sausages, they are fab. All perfectly flavoured and packed full of meat, unlike the 'evil' supermarket versions which are packed full of non meaty extras. The black pudding is just perfect - lightly spiced (not overpowering like some versions) and has converted some non pud eaters, so the requests for some to be despatched West have been received. The daddy of them has to be the haggis. Didn't make it to Findlay's for my own GF Burns' supper, but hell, I'm Scottish and always have whiskey in the bottle, so Burns' night is now April. Gorgeously, moist and spiced haggis, which hasn't dried out as cheaper versions do - just pure class :-) Prices are reasonable too, instead of the usual 'its GF so we'll massively overcharge you for it because we know you'll pay it', it was about £2.50 for black pudding and around £4 for haggis but I bought a few different things at the time so don't quote me exactly on this!
