Johnson County Public Library - Trafalgar Branch

The Trafalgar Branch Library is pretty amazing. Even before going inside, I was struck by the…read morenatural wildflower/prairie garden that surrounds the building. A trail winds through the garden with the Kelsey Anne Devine StoryWalk for kids. (Kelsey was a local resident that passed away too young). In front of the building is a large art sun sculpture. There is also a patio with chairs to sit and read surrounded by additional garden. Inside, the library is large and open with beautiful high ceilings. Wood and stone give the building a natural feeling. The Children's Area has a small play area and a separate room dedicated to play. There are lots of books for the kids. The Teen Area has comfy seating and a chess set set up. Besides books, there is information posted about important topics for teens. The Adult Area has more comfortable seating surrounding a fireplace. Lots of natural light comes into the space from large windows that overlook the garden. This is my favorite spot to read the daily newspaper. Plenty of small tables are scattered throughout the building. A set of public computers are available near center of the library. A large community room with small kitchen near the entrance was being cleaned during my visit. Baskets of free vegetables from summer gardens for visitors to take home stand near the entrance. Outside, an emergency box with opioid antidote reminds us of the struggle with addiction in our rural communities. There is plenty of parking outside with several handicapped spaces. This library offers much more than books and I'll be back.

Beautiful library with great staff, plus it has a fireplace. Fast wifi and quick checkout!read more

Oktoberfest - cheese curds (Seymour Oktoberfest)

    Oktoberfest

    (1 review)

https://www.facebook.com/SeymourOktoberfest/…read more https://www.seymouroktoberfest.com/ Seymour, Indiana, just celebrated its 45th annual downtown Oktoberfest (2017) complete with tons of food and craft vendors, fair rides, a Biergarten, music on several stages and much more. As a local, I have attended about 35 years of Seymour Oktoberfest, and truly, it just keeps getting better each year. Parking is not a problem since the event is so large (most of downtown) and there's a shuttle that takes people back / forth from the Seymour High School parking lot to the library (next to the Biergarten). The shuttle is tractor drawn, so that's fun to do anyway. On the 5 separate stages of the event are all sorts of music including a German-style 7-member band (made up mostly of local area teachers), cloggers, bluegrass, local rock bands, etc. I really like how soloists (or duets) will just be randomly placed throughout the event playing music (ie. accordion players, banjo/string bass duets, etc.). The parade starts at 1:30 every year and is huge! 5 area high school marching bands perform along the route, tons of church and non-profit floats, way too many people walking with politicians and candy is given out by many. Grab a seat somewhere away from the corner of Walnut and 2nd St. (by the library / Biergarten) since that can be a little crowded. Regarding what food to eat, ugh, that's tough to say. There's so much good from which to choose. The Sati-babi is always a crowd favorite (hunks of flame-grilled pork on a stick) along with the apple dumpling (which usually sells out). If you go away hungry, you weren't trying hard enough. Finally, the Biergarten. The logistics are pretty good with coming in and leaving, but they could have a little more room at the line to get your beer. I could have just gone at a time when they were doing contests (ie. stein holding, etc.) and that caused a bit of a bottleneck. The choices are pretty good with plenty of the mass-produced watered-down stuff (Bud Light, etc.) but they have a nice selection of German-style and local beers (ie. Spaten, Salt Creek Brewery (Bedford, IN), etc.). Hats off to the organizers and all the volunteers. So much of the event proceeds go to local non-profits. What a fun way to support good causes.

The staff were very welcoming and the location has a nice collection. Best of all, JCPL has plenty of regular events that I'm looking forward to attending in the future.

Parking is free along the frontage driveway that parallels State Street. Inside, there is a lobby with restrooms and meeting rooms, and beyond the lobby, is the main library room. Books are mainly to the right of the central checkout counter. Audio (books and cd's) and video are to the left. There are also checkout stations as well as computers available. The library has a reciprocal borrowing agreement with the Greenwood Public Library which is part of the Evergreen integrated library system. This agreement allows sharing of materials beyond the county line. For residents of Johnson County, there is no additional fee for getting an ID card, though out of county residents can either pay an annual fee to get access to the materials or can get a card from their own library if it is also a part of the Evergreen system too. Nice place....clean and orderly...lots of materials on hand. Review #2196
