This year's German Mass was held December 4, and it was the largest turnout I have seen for the annual event. German language missals are provided so that even those unfamiliar with German may follow along. This is a splendid Christmas event that I recommend to everyone, regardless of personal beliefs. Architecturally and historically, the church is also on many must-visit lists for Buffalo, New York.

What they do is offer space for many different groups to come and meet. The space helps those groups come together and talk to each other as well. Sharing experiences and faiths, hoping to keep a dialog going so different faiths learn more about each other. They also allow a place for different faiths to come together and work together on common issues and concerns. The group is not a religious organization in itself, its an umbrella under which different faiths can come together and learn about each other. Our Lady of Hope is the Parrish, the church is called The Annunciation Roman Catholic Church. Its on Lafayette and Greenwood Place, between Richmond and Niagara. Imagine if you can, the West Side as a series of dirt roads, with all the mud that comes with that. Families moving into the area found it difficult to get to the closest RC churches, and asked the Bishop if they could have their own church. A small worship space was built in the 1880's, but as more families moved from the First Ward into this area (the First Ward was becoming industrialized), this church needed to be made larger. And it was. Open in the first decade of the last century, this church remains standing today. The church was built in the Gothic style, designed by Albert A Post. Many of the murals done by the same artist who did Our Lady of Victory Basilica in Lackawanna, Reggi. Sometimes its open and you can walk around. Worth the time.

I have been here over the years a number of times, but more recently I have been here almost weekly, for a variety of things. Its on Symphony Circle, across from Kleinhans. Its also the oldest church in Buffalo, founded in 1812, and has had a continuous congregation ever since. The current church location has been the site of the congregation since the late 1880's. The land was donated by Mrs Trueman Avery in honor of her parents. The church was designed by Green & Wicks, at the time a very well known firm. During the Pan Am exhibit, Theodore Roosevelt worshipped at the church, both as VP and POTUS. The windows here are amazing. If you can get a tour, take one. Especially on a sunny day when the light shining through the stained glass really is remarkable. Even at night the church is lovely from the inside. Intricate artwork easily visible throughout. The windows were put in in the 1920s. Over the years there have been some modifications to the church, some new things installed in members names and others things sold off. But overall it remains very similar to what it started as over 100 years ago. Its a large church, so now houses other things as well. KC Fitness in the basement. Explore Buffalo has offices here. Parking is in a small lot by the church or street. It can be hit or miss. I'd arrive early if you are attending an event.

I love the way it looks in the sunlight. It's not old or gothic at all, it's a very pristine, flowery, odern looking church, which really shines in the sunlight, as I said. It's brand new-looking but it's still got a lot of class and style and grace, and is a lovely sight at sunset and sunrise. I've only been inside it once, during a walking tour of Williamsville this past Fall, and it looks brand new and smells fresh and clean (like most of Williamsville does). I like going inside churches, but I admit I do prefer the old ones, such as in the UK and across Europe.

The chapel windows are from Innsbruck Austria and are really quite beautiful to see, especially when the light is right. Like many Buffalo churches it used to have a much larger congregation, but it does remain active today and is a "go to" in the local area. If you go inside, you will see the light through the windows, which can be spectacular at the right time of day.
