As someone from Illinois who is obsessed with Garrett's Popcorn, I was thrilled to see a gourmet popcorn place in town. Samples galore, an extensive flavor menu, and a variety of sizes to choose from. A tip-unless you are feeding a large group, don't get a huge size of the sweet flavors. SO dang rich and a little bit goes a long way. The snack size has lasted my family of 5 over a week now and doesn't go stale quickly coated in caramel or chocolate. We gobble the cheese varieties fast, though. Keep your hands and fingers clear of the bowl. ;-) Take 6 is my favorite sweet flavor, with caramel corn covered in PB, chocolate, nuts, and pretzels. Yes, please. The extra cheddar is our fave savory flavor. But honestly, you can't go wrong.... especially because you can sample anything before purchase. Did I mention this place is a rockin' gift shop, too? We picked up so many unique stocking stuffers, both candy and random local goods. They also have a wall of bulk candies. I would avoid these, as the Jelly Bellies we got were extremely hard and stale. Doesn't impact the star action, though, because popcorn is their expertise. The place is pretty nice. The popcorn smell delicious. We arrived to find no open sign on. It looked like it was closed, but we was having a tug on the door and the door opens where he went inside. It took a few minutes to be greeted by the host. But once she came out, she never said anything to us other than do you want your receipt at the end of the order. Pleasant place but the help not so pleasant. On a recent Yelp outing, we were given bags of popcorn from the Proper Popcorn. I haven't been able to get the taste out of my mind so I finally broke down and visited the store. I entered and smelled the sweet aromas of various popped corns wafting toward me until it surrounded me with a whirlwind of deliciousness. The business was immaculate and the way in which the popcorn was displayed on the shelves was like an art museum: beautifully balanced and tempting. The employee waiting on me was attentive, pleasant and wearing casual business clothing which made this employee look like they were invested in the company. (One never gets a second chance to make a first impression.) My wife and I run an Airbnb so I purchased a small bag of popcorn for our next guest. I resisted the urge to tear open the package and indulge before I arrived home. This store has not only popcorn but various candies and sweets which they can make into presentation baskets. Well, very disappointed in the way I was treated by the owner. I ordered four bags of popcorn for Thanksgiving. The box arrived with one of the large bags sliced open on the side and popcorn everywhere. Of course we now get to clean up the mess and clean each bag. Attempted to resolve - I emailed twice, no response. Phoned twice, no return phone call. Called today, the owner was there, refused to come to the phone to answer my question. But this is the conversation through one of her employees. Me: "Why is it that you can't send me a replacement bag?" Owner: "We will give you a credit back to your credit card." Me: "But I want the popcorn, it was going to be a gift." Owner: "You need to go back online and reorder." Me: "But I already paid for the shipping, you are asking me to pay for it a second time." Owner: "Yes, we will only credit your account." This is the second time with this experience. Just a thought, maybe you should package it better!! TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE!! I have ordered quite a few times and sent as gifts. Extremely disappointed at the way I was treated and the owner's lack of caring. Hard to believe you show no emails because I can forward two & show the two times I called. Let's face it, you didn't want to come to the phone when I called and refunded $8.50 which included NO shipping. I asked for the one bag of popcorn be resent and YOU refused. It's not often I can get overly-excited about popcorn (save the buttery, salty goodness of movie theater popcorn), but Proper Popcorn in DT Knoxville is an obvious exception. I was instantly taken aback by the array of delicious-sounding popcorn proudly displayed in their lobby. They also offer samples, so you don't have to wonder about the flavor that got away. The real stars of the show here: The friendly staff, who are generous in letting you sample their product, and the Cheddar popcorn! This amazing take on cheesy popcorn is far above and beyond the dry, powdery cheese popcorn in a foil bag I'm familiar with. It's like they melted fresh cheddar over popcorn, minus the greasiness. Popcorn was good and prepackaged fudge too. Expensive but really good. My kids didn't care for the candy mix color popcorn. I didn't either but the white chocolate fudge was pretty good for something not fresh made. I would definitely eat here again but wished they offered discounts or something. I happened by this place today and am so happy that I did! It is located in Franklin Square, right next door to Smart Toys & Books. Hadley and Haley, the two girls who worked there, were so nice and friendly and super helpful. You know - in other words - they treat you with true Southern Hospitality! Bless their hearts...........they let you try ANY flavor of popcorn you desire. And as many different flavors as your lil heart wants!!! There are so many wonderful & delicious flavors that it was super hard to decide which ones to buy. They also have lots of really cool toys, trinkets, candy & games to help you make a gift basket for just about anybody and for any occasion! I meet someone for an interview at Sami's a few weeks ago and they mentioned Proper Popcorn. At first I was a little shocked that West Knoxville had somewhere so specialized and cute. I kind of laughed at the idea of a popcorn shop....I mean come on, its quite different than a coffee shop. However, for two weeks I could not get this place out of my head. Every time I saw popcorn somewhere else (ok fine, in my pantry) all I could think about was this place. I finally got the chance to go today, and wow! I am so glad I did. This place not only has more flavors than you can name, it also makes all your candy shop dreams come true. Some of the flavors are dark chocolate, cookies and cream, birthday cake, Buffalo, cheddar, sour cream and chives, movie theater...and so many more! While it is safer to socially distance and watch movies at home, this place is your best friend. They have gift baskets made up, or you can out custome ones together. The possibilities are endless! They have several sizes ranging from $3- $25+ (for the giant bags!) I am sampled the pumpkin spice, because Autumn, and ended up buying the pumpkin spice and the dark chocolate sea salt. I stopped in yesterday to get a giant bag of the caramel popcorn to tide us over during social distancing. The employees were incredibly careful in their hand washing and food handling practices. It was impressive. Plus, the popcorn is excellent--a little chewy because of the caramel but nicely balanced between salty and sweet. We definitely recommend! read more
