I haven't been to the pizza bar or to crust even though I've been meaning to try them, I just always seem to return to gourmet pizza pantry. It's kind of like your local (pub), you go there the most cause you don't have to dress up, you feel at home and you don't have to pay an arm and a leg for a drink, or in this case a pizza. The shop front looks a little run down, but this makes me like it more, cause it feels like its been round a while, you know, stood the test of time, especially when almost everything in Sydney seems to be getting a face lift and looks brand new. The service is also good here, the people are friendly, they're quick and always generous with servings of seafood on their seafood pizzas, which is the main reason I keep coming back. If you live in the area come down and try the friendly neighbourhood pizza shop-who knows it might become your new local

I ordered a half & half family sized Vegetarian and Margherita pizza between 3 extreme sufferers of the post -workout munchies. The toppings were incredibly fresh and the crust and base were cooked to perfection. Well worth the 1.5 hour drive towards DeeWhy. Furthermore, the head chef was an absolute delight, he even created a customised Nutella pizza as per our request, despite not having it on the menu. We were so blown away by said Nutella pizza, that we had to order a second one to take-away. The food is spectacular and the fact that it's open till 3am, I think he said.. is certainly a plus for all you night owls! Only thing I would query is the lack of table water, you lose a star for that Mimmos, with food so rich and flavoursome, how could you not bring out a few glasses and a jug.

An awkward 20 second silence ensued, then - ding! - a little lightbulb went on as I realised he was the front counter guy from Pizzeria Rio. Let's quickly gloss over the fact that I ordered pizza so often from my local woodfire joint that they recognise me out and about, and focus on the impressive aspect of this evening encounter: the service factor. Clearly, these guys pay attention to who prefers their 'Venice' topping chicken-free - leaving a delicious and vegetarian combo of artichoke, mushroom, pesto and olives - with an oh-so healthy side of garden salad. (Yes, that's also me). I love that they use a homemade tomato sauce as well as low-fat mozzarella in toppings to help you out on the guilt front. And how can one possibly not enjoy a pizza that arrives to your door in the shape of a square? To your door on Upper Pitt Street, that is.

Aside from the unique square bases this is traditional pizza - that's not to say Napoli traditional, but Friday night with a footy-game and a foil-wrapped garlic bread traditional; simple combos that make sense instead of strained gourmet monstrosities. The toppings are never oily or cheese-drowned, and the fresh bases are perfect: neither cracker-thin nor dense and bready. As I say, you can eat in - they might even give you a plate - or go for home delivery, but this is the definitive Australian take-out pizzeria: it's warm and bustling and heady with mouth-watering smells of the pizza oven.
