Started out so great, but went downhill fast. We went to this really cute waterfront restaurant in…read morethe beautiful Ortigia and sat on their patio facing the sunset. We ordered cocktails and vegetarian arancini and they were really good. Then we decided to stay for dinner...and everything fell apart. We ordered the house salad (fennel/red onion) and they brought a buffalo mozzarella. We explained that we ordered the house salad, not that, and they brought the correct one. Then we ordered off the vegetarian section, one truffle pizza and one cheese ravioli. The restaurant seemed to be emptying out, (at 5:30pm) and we asked if they could turn one of the outdoor heaters on for us, and they said "no, bc we are closing soon". We were understanding, but cold. Then the pizza comes out...it has shellfish all over it. We asked the waitress to come over, and explain that we ordered a truffle pizza off the vegetarian menu, and she says "oh yeah! That's fish, not meat!" And we were like "ma'am, we def ordered off the vegetarian section, and I held up the menu and pointed to the items, for fear that my Italian was unintelligible. She nodded, and acted like we made a mistake but she would make a new pizza to be nice. We started getting a little worried at this point, as we were now the last people there. We had gotten two wrong dishes delivered to our table, and were still waiting for the ravioli. So, here comes the ravioli...I take a bite and I'm certain I'm eating meat. I call the waitress over, and she says "yes, wild boar raviolis! What you ordered!" Now, this waitress has watched us hold the menu up to order, ask For vegetarian item after vegetarian item, and send back a pizza for having fish on it...wth did she think we wanted with wild boar meat? I've been a vegetarian for 35 years, and travelled literally all around the world, and never had such "confusion" about what "meat " was. So, my bf was just like nevermind, let's just leave, but the waitress was like "no, no, we will fix it" and so we sat out in the cold alone on the patio for another 20 min waiting for the cheese ravioli we ordered. The replacement pizza never arrived. Our bill was 120euros. Really disappointed and the whole thing was awkward as hell.

Definitely take the walk along the water from the main road to grab a seat, as this is an upscale spot, and you can tell all the ingredients are very fresh. One of the BEST restaurants we ate at when visiting all of Sicily!

We were on our way back to our B&B in Siracusa from Ortigia Island. We planned to skip this place…read moreand go to a gelateria closer to where we were staying, so that our goodies wouldn't melt before we got home. But, the crowd here was just so huge that we thought there must be something worth trying here. I'm so glad that we came! The name of this place means "crazy desire" in Italian - Someone correct me if I'm wrong! - And it's not an exaggeration because every single item here with me covetous, and a little bit drooly! In the end I went with a "tartufo," which is a heart of ice cream and ganache wrapped with a chocolate shell. TO DIE FOR. In a little bit of serendipity, as I was asking silly questions about different flavors and gluten, I realized I was chatting with the owner of the place. He talked to me a little bit about the prevalence of celiac disease in Italy - that's why you need to only ask at most places, and they will have a gluten-free substitute for most pastas, pizzas, and even some dessert items! It was just a nice treat to talk to the owner of such a busy place, on a busy night, as two out of towners who just happened to be passing by. He didn't speak much English, so we were speaking in Italian the whole time... But don't let that dissuade you from coming here! If you're in Siracusa, do not miss this place, you won't regret it.

This is the spot you have to go to where you will have no regrets. You can get anything from amazing coffee, granita (Italian ice) served with their homemade brioche buns, ice cream cakes, regular cakes, gelato, pastries, cocktails, the list goes on and on. They have indoor and outdoor seating that is plenty for all to come. Everyone is very friendly. I was lucky enough to go on a behind the scenes tour of the bakery. They homemake everything literally everything except the ceramic plates they serve it on. When in Modica stop by and have a treat. Great shopping is nearby just down the street.

One place that is a must on your trip is Liola for a espresso, granita or some incredible Gelato (that's ice cream to you Americans)! Liola is a family run business and they are all hard workers. The owner Georgette makes all of the gelato's fresh every day...you will usually find her in the back making tiny gelato cones or amazing ice cream cakes. The tiny gelato cones are very popular and people buy them by the pound. The bad part is that once you start eating them you can not stop. Why can't our ice cream in America taste like this? I think I could live here on gelato alone. And if you are reading this there is a good chance you only speak English...so do not be shy when visiting here because Georgetta speaks great English and would love to have a conversation and show you her kitchen. I loved the tour...it was great getting to see how the gelato cakes were made. My favorite gelato that I had and I sampled most of them was the pistachio. I almost did not get it because it was green but then said, "You only live once!" Wow was I hooked. In fact, it was my favorite flavor and I could have eaten it every day. My second favorite flavor gelato was the Baci, which is chocolate and hazelnut. In past trips, Baci use to by my number one, until my summer trip to Sicily this year. Sorry Baci!!! The espresso is also amazing here to...one of the best I have ever had in Europe. There is also beer here too but I could not mix it with gelato and espresso. I also recommend you try the granita. It is like an Italian Ice but you can actually eat with out needing a shovel. When I was a kid there was one flavor...espresso and then eventually came a second flavor called lemon. I had no idea that there were advances in granita over the past few years...there was strawberry (which I loved) and many other flavors to choose from. So if you find yourself traveling through Modica, then make sure you stop by here and have a nice treat...you deserve it...your on vacation right!!!
