Um, yeah....I hate to give a bad review to a masseuse, but this guy totally CREEPED ME OUT. Ladies, I would not recommend going here alone. There is always a chance I was misreading, but after over 10 years of getting massages from both male and female therapists, and attending massage school myself, I think not. I couldn't get in to see my regular massage therapist a few weeks ago and a co-worker recommended this office after finding them online. I explained to the guy on the phone that I needed someone who could do deep massage but wasn't overly aggressive as I tend to bruise and hurt for days after a massage if they go too deep. Overall the massage was ok. I think the problem was that it wasn't deep enough. And to be honest the guy kind of had a weird vibe. Alex knows his stuff and I highly enjoyed my massage! Especially the hot stones and accupressure. This was my first male massage therapist experience and I don't regret it! If you're wondering if you should try Alex, I'll try to summarize him for you: - Laid back, down to earth, unpretentious - Extremely knowledgeable in all facets of massage therapy - Someone who genuinely wants to help - Holistic and therapeutic - Patient-focused Alex was able to tell that I had TMJ just by looking at me, how the heck could he tell??? I have mixed feelings after my massage at Probodywork. I purchased a Groupon for a one-hour-massage with Alex (the price was 55 USD). It's great that you can book your appointments online, that was a first positive surprise. You get a booking confirmation as well as a reminder a day before the massage appointment - great! When I got to Probodywork, it was weird since the receptionist ignored me for two minutes. Then finally she asked who I am, and introduced me to Alex. Alex was very friendly and made a very positive impression on me. He took me to the clean massage room, and had me fill out a first-time form, where you can specify areas you would like special attention during the massage, or other areas you would like to leave untouched. I told him that I feel tense in shoulders and neck, and he promised to give these areas special attention. Alex is knowledgeable about pressure points and technique, but while he was really nice and attentive (asking often how I was doing, whether I am comfortable, whether the pressure is too much) I felt that there was no "flow". He performed different pressing techniques with fingers, hands and arms, yet he wasn't kneading my muscles much. I had the feeling the movements weren't connected enough. A bit all over the place with different techniques, and though I requested a deep-tissue massage not really deep enough for my taste. He did pay special attention to my requested areas, and then moved on to a full-body massage. Uncomfortable for me was the cold I felt on my feet, even with lying on a warming blanket (I do get cold feet quickly though). The highlight of the massage were the hot stones that I was massaged with for about 5 minutes, and the hot towels that Alex used to rub off the oil and wrap my face with - extremely pleasant. All in all not a bad massage, but I certainly had better (try Verde Touch in Mountain View or Orchid Bloom Spa in Los Altos). I did feel relaxed after the massage, but I don't feel it was deep enough to really release me from my muscle pain for a longer period. read more

Alex is a therapeutic massage therapist. If you are looking for a "spa experience" or "Swedish massage", you may want to book at an actual spa. Alex is a healer. I have a serious degenerative disease in the discs of my neck. I am in chronic pain. I have been seeing Alex for 9 months and I will never go to another massage therapist. Like others. I found Alex through a Groupon offer. This was my 4th attempt at finding a local massage therapist through Groupon. The first 3 "deals" were either lukewarm massage or plain painful. However, after one visit with Alex, I knew I had found someone who could help me. Alex is schooled in so many different healing modalities in addition to massage- acupressure, aromatherapy, herbal medicine (to name a few). Like one reviewer noted, he often sends me home with "homework" because healing the body is not some magic bullet that one person or one drug can shoot to cure. It is a process. The environment at the office is a little different. Often, there is no receptionist (depending on the time) because many different body healers use the space. I repeat - it is not a spa - it is a space for healing the body and body/mind. I have been seeing Alex regularly ever since my first massage. I know for a fact that his knowledge and his healing touch are helping me in a way that Western medicine can't...and, for me, that is priceless. His massage room is very clean, comfortable and relaxing. I can tell him exactly what is going on with my body and he has a plan. If I am tighter on one side, he will work more on that side because it needs more attention. Symmetrical massage may feel normal for some people but my body does not respond to stress and pain symmetrically - I may have a tight spot on one side near my neck but a tight spot on the other side near my scapula. Lastly, you may notice that one of Alex's certifications is in Italian - he is European - which explained to me immediately why he was so open to alternative healing methods. It seems all other countries value solving health problems at the root level and not just slapping a band aid on the issue. Just my opinion:) read more

My brother introduced me to Alex's services. Since I have chronic pain issues, I am very careful on who I allow to work on me. If the therapist does not listen to my feedback/experience or does not intuitively know how my body is reacting, they can inadvertently cause more pain. Alex is the only massage therapist that I did not have to "correct" even once. He tuned in immediately to my problem areas, and tailored his technique and pressure to my unique situation. I've been receiving massages with Alex for year's now, and he's great! Very thorough, and experienced. He is really great at receiving communication from clients. Whenever I ask for more or less pressure he's either accommodating or explains to me why less or more pressure would be beneficial or not. Really knowledgeable about anatomy and physiology! The depth of his massage isn't maybe in the amount of pressure but (as with ANY massage) in YOUR ability to release/relax into the healing treatment. I have gone to several massage places but having a male as my massage therapist is a first for me. His slightly rough hands sometimes deters me from enjoying the experience. Sometimes the pressure is applied more heavily on one side than the other. Other times, he massages one side a certain way and then completely forgets to do the other! In addition, the massage lacks a coherent theme. One moment it's all about rubbing and stretching, the next, hot towels and hot stones. The hot stones are delightful but brief. His movements feel choppy as if he spends more time preparing for than actual work. Although I enjoy the East Asian music, it too feels randomly added to the mix. The only reoccurring theme is that he solicits feedback throughout the session and gets peeved if I answer "it's fine" to his "should I put more or less pressure?" Of all the massages I have had, this has got to be the worst and hence the lone star rating. One of my feet even felt sore for a few days after the massage. Despite all this, I do appreciate his feedback. He mentions that my left side was more tightly winded and offered suggestions for yoga poses. I also receive a stretching chart with his recommendations on which ones to target. He's helpful, but for me his style, like the hot tea I received at the end of the session, is blend and just doesn't hit the spot. I was not aware that Probodywork only has one person, Alex, to juggle all aspects of the business. I am for small businesses and self-employment so I do hope Alex improves. I've met Alex once I took a massage at a clinic, and that was enough to stick with him for all the massages I'll ever need. He is not just great giving massages, he has a lot of knowledge in his field of expertise, has a wide range of techniques and knows all of them very well, on top of that, he is also a great guy, you won't just come out having a great feeling after the massage but you would also know that the money you spent was barely enough for the great service you received, or at least that is how I feel. I was extremely disappointed after reading all the good reviews as I had a very different experience. I found Alex to be creepy and completely unprofessional. I was never asked anything about my pain or why I was getting a massage in the first place. Not only did I not receive anything remotely like relief, I was disturbed by our interaction for several days after the appointment - just what I wanted after spending that much money on a sub-par treatment. Alex is a very professional massage therapist. He works hard and is a good person, plus charges a very fair price for his service. I've probably had 30 different masseuses provide massages to me over the past 10 years and Alex is among the top 5 best. I've been going to Alex a few times now and am really happy with my decision to have regular massages with him! I have chronic back pain due to my height and frequent tension headaches and all has been vastly improved since seeing him once or twice a month. Alex is extremely knowledgeable about how the muscles and ligaments in the body work and is very good about pinpointing problem areas instead of just giving a general rub down. Alex has helped me both with his hands-on massage and with several suggestions for follow-up exercises. I had a wonderful massage by Alex 2 days ago, and I came here to post and was shocked to see some of the negative reviews here. Due to an injury to my neck during birth and subsequent surgeries to my neck, I've spent my entire life in a low constant pain and get monthly massages and chiropractic adjustments.. Alex worked out all my neck and shoulder pain in one session and left me feeling gloriously light. He even noticed my rotated hips and worked on my lower back muscles to get the hip bones back in alignment. I bought the groupon online but had a very hard time booking an appointment before the expiration date. There are some problems with their online booking system. Even you can make an appointment online, it doesn't mean that you can get the appointment. Alex emailed me and asked me to change my appointment twice. Due to time conflicts with my schedule, I couldn't make it to the other time slots that he wants me to go. Now, i have to add $45 for the same service I could get if my appointment wasn't cancelled. I saw Alex very recently and what impressed me most was his vast knowledge in holistic and ayurvedic approach to his craft. He is skilled and does an outstanding job as a Massage Therapist. I went here originally because of a deal I got through Groupon. The other Yelp reviews looked good so I decided to get the Groupon and check it out and boy was I glad I did. Alex was terrific! He asked me what areas I wanted to focus on, what areas to avoid, and checked in during the massage (but not in an overly obnoxious way) to make sure everything was going well. I hadn't had a massage in so long, I was really excited to go to this appointment. I love the fact that the appointment times are open and flexible. Especially since I work and I have kids, the times I have available are not the normal 9-5 like most places are. Another plus was that the place wasn't super spa'd out. A lot of places have multiple scents going on, and ultra dark lighting, etc. etc. when all I want is a good massage. It had just enough cleanliness and warmth. I think there was some mood sounds but it was subtle enough for me. For me, he used different techniques than I had experienced before (like hot stones), but he was really great in asking the right questions at the right time. Talked a little to relax in the beginning and only on an as needed business towards the end so I was definitely dozing off in the end... It was great and I sent my husband for a massage, too. The only negative I can think of is that it was difficult to find (I went to his place on El Camino Way) My GPS kept thinking it was on El Camino. But, I also now know that he does visit places off site (including companies, for those lucky enough employers to hire him.) so I'm sure if requested he'd be happy to come to wherever you are. My husband had no problems finding the place, so it may just be me. Full disclosure: I found him through our sons' preschool (classmates). I was referred to Alex for a painful and stubbornly clenched upper back, brought on by a heavy and prolonged workload. Even though I consider myself to be physically active and aware, I wasn't able to make it budge on my own and had months of pain. Alex was able to work it out, releasing the contractions a little more with each visit through a variety of methods, until the pain was completely and magically gone. He has a deep knowledge of musculature and dynamic movement and I learn something each time, such as a new stretching exercise or an enhanced awareness of body mechanics. After this incident I realize that massage should be more than a rare treat. It's more like a preventative and a really enjoyable way to get back to center. He stayed for the entire eight hours of the event, giving 15 minute massages to our blood donors. I should add that this was 100% volunteer time on his part.
