We sat in the gardena and it was like something out of my childhood and I allmost expected to see a young Herriot sleeping in a pram.A lot of the kitchen stuff etc. were things I remembered seeing in use years ago.I watch the repeats of the programmes with new eyes.

Two tour guides took us on a 1-hour walk-through of the hall and they were amazing at sharing all the history about the place. I felt like it was money well spent and I got a true feel for the history of Newby. The gardens and expansive grounds also are beautiful to stroll around in. I wish I could live here! Staying in Skelton-on-Ure, we also happened upon the Church of Christ the Consoler, which is amazing as it appears like an ancient Gothic cathedral in the middle of a sheep farm but is actually around 150 years old built in Gothic revival style. Located on a former wartime Air-base this museum is run by many volunteers, including an ex-rear Gunner and wireless operator who was shot up during a raid over Germany. George Martin can be found in the Air Gunners Exhibition and I can assure you a more interesting bloke with his experiences and memories of this period I have yet to meet. The Museum is spread within several restored wartime sheds which house the various themes on display, along with many restored aircraft outside and in hangers. It also still has the air traffic control tower which displays how things would have been. One of the hangers displays other restored Aircraft including, the Halifax bomber of which nearly 80 were lost during raids over Germany from this base alone. Other more modern planes are also on display including the Buccaneer, Vulcan Bomber, and Harrier to name a few. The museum continues to restore aircraft and long may it continue we had an excellent day out and at an entrance cost of only £5.00 per adult including parking it wasn't going to break the bank.

It was a stronghold in the 'siege of Bradford' and where a ghost requested that we 'pity poor Bradford'! The exhibits are quite 'traditional', but this doesn't detract from the charm of the museum, in fact quite often you can be the only people in the attraction which gives it a certain atmosphere, especially when you are wandering around the haunted rooms! The museum is large enough to while away an hour, but not too big that it would be boring for younger visitors. The promise of a play in the park and an icecream should keep them quiet and on their best behaviour too - the park opposite the museum is large and well kept and has something for everyone.

The North Shed is undergoing construction that was the only bummer. Everything else fantastic. The better gift shop is in the main entrance building.
