One of the things I liked about living in the United States was Fed Ex Kinko's. The best print shop in the world. A place where you can print up a twenty metre print of a face that can then be stuck on a wall and called street art. I also used to come here to get A3 prints to promote local music nights. I've been hard pressed to find a decent alternative in this country, that was until I found Printgo. This smallish shop is perfect for all of your printing needs, whether that be a 20,000 word dissertation or an A1 poster; they have pretty much everything you require from a print shop. I came here to print off a 97,000 word manuscript I had written the previous year. They even offered to bind it for me, an offer I declined. Printigo was very busy when I went in. This, of course, is a good sign. And gives me the chance to snoop around a bit without being pounced on and asked if I need any help. Primarily, they print T shirts. Your artwork, or design, or with a helping hand from them. Secondarily, they print other assorted clothing. They also do banners, posters, flyers and business cards - which was handy as that was what I was after. However, you'd be a little hard-pressed to know that they do anything other than garment printing as there doesn't seem to be much in the way of advertisement of this service in the shop. However, the staff were pleasant and helpful - although the guy I spoke to had to keep looking everything up when I asked him a question. At least all the info was to hand, however. The business cards are a little pricey, if you're used to good old Vistaprint freebies. That said, they are all laminated, double sided, in colour and individually designed, so fair enough. It was £75 for a pack of 500. They also have a 'no minimum order' policy on garment printing - which seems like a good thing if you just want a one-off. read more

Printigo. Now they are open on Saturdays, I have the chance to get my one-off t-shirt printed. This has been a long-term procrastination. The clipping is from comic, and it shows a New York 1980s erotic dancer in a dive changing room. (It looks better than it sounds, honest.) I've got to a certain stage with the job online. But every time through the process, I lost faith. Around five different times on lots of different sites. 'What will the print quality be like?' 'What are the options?' 'After uploading and editing my image, will I be surprised by postage and packaging costs?' After parking the car in the print shops' car park, we stroll in. From the outset I've got total confidence that Printigo are going to do the best job. Even though it's just one item, the man behind the counter gives the job a really detailed level of attention. 'How big do you want the image?' 'Where do you want the image?' What printing process? I can explain, if you want.' 'Heavy-weight t-shirt or standard?' 'Try it on for size, maybe?' A week later, I've got the t-shirt. The placing of the image is exactly as agreed, and it looks fantastic. I normally use Streetprint or as they are now called 'Printbot' so when I went out of my comfort zone to try out new printers; I tried this company. It seems this printer is mainly about printing on clothing i.e. T-shirts, hats etc but they do general printing services as well. I respect their business and it's a place where you should visit if you're looking to print on clothing but for me I wasn't taken a back. I'm not going to stop going to my traditional printers because I didn't think the print work they did for me was that great. I had some flyers printed and to be fair, their prices are a little expensive. If I remember rightly, they were over £80 for 250 flyers and at my usual printers I can get 250 flyers printed double-side on glossy paper for around £48. So, this was a huge margin compared to what I normally pay. A decent printers but not my cup of tea!! read more

I've used Printigo on a number of occasions over the years and they have always been reliable and (fairly) cheap. The main reason for using them would be if you wanted a small run of t-shirts, or other clothing, branded for an event or party, but they also do posters, business cards, banners and the like. It's a toss-up whether they are cheaper than some online places you could use (particularly for business cards, which are very cheap and cheerful online these days) but whereas you might save a few quid by doing it online, you have to add in postage for heavier items and, once you do that, there really isn't a lot in it. What you get here, of course, is advice and assistance face-to-face, which is worth the extra money. read more
