The girls and guys who organise this are to be commended as they organise a whole range of fascinating activities during this week long festival and they decorate the city in rainbow colours for their parade in the last day of the festival.
The parade itself draws large cheering crowds and the free concert and amusement park make this a great family fun day out. The last night features the Pride Ball in a local nightclub, which is a heck of a night out.
I suppose Pride must come before a Ball (sorry couldn't resist that). The parade always includes Amnesty International, public bodies, trade unions and politicians but sadly not all of our local political parties are humane enough to support marriage equality. This place is the only part of the UK that does not allow gay marriage.
As a straight person I can't conceive being told that I can't marry because of my sexuality. What I can't get my head around is how these same politicians who deny basic human rights to fellow human beings, apparently on religious fundamentalist grounds, will not legislate to deny divorce. In fact some of them are divorced yet the commandments are clear here that marriage is for life.
Again I can't conceive of being denied divorce. If this isn't crazy enough it becomes even more bizarre that if two gay folk marry in Wales, Scotland or England and move here their marriage isn't recognised. Rant over. My family can't wait for the 7th Pride in Newry Parade in 2018. read more
