Would give them 10 stars if I could! The ranch is beautiful, the horses are great, and the people are amazing. My friends and I drove down from San Diego for a day trip, and had the best time! Would recommend this place to everyone and we will definitely be returning soon.

The horse's #$@% !!

It really PAINS me to write a NEGATIVE review. I really wanted to like and recommend this organization. The animals are adorable, the staff was fairly nice and the "non-profit" (unverified) in rescuing abused animals seems like a worthy cause. However, the cuts and scrapes, bruised sides, and realization that my INJURIES were PREVENTABLE gives me no other option but to write the TRUTH here! Falling off a horse could have been significantly worse if certain common-sense measures on safety were taken by the staff! First, there are NO EXPLICIT DIRECTIONS anywhere to their ranch on the website. The Yelp app maps Pretty Horses Rescue to my Apple maps app. However, following the Apple maps app got us LOST! We drove half an hour on unmarked dirt roads only to be met by a BLOCKED OFF path! When we tried using the Google Maps or Waze app, the location is listed as "All the Pretty Horses" instead! At least this location is accurate even if the title is not! Compounding the problem, our texts to the organizers WENT UNANSWERED when we simply wanted to get directions! After following Waze to the "All the Pretty Horses" location, we spotted some signs along the way that reassured we were at least on the right path. We finally arrived an hour late to our appointment but the staff was kind enough to let us ride. A mass of ranch dogs literally ran up to us when we stepped out of the car and it was a bit scary at first, but the dogs were friendly. In fact, all the animals including the kittens, pigs, and birds were so CUTE! We each got onto a horse. I was apparently assigned the horse that follows its own path. It's fortunate that it was me instead of another child that rode this horse because it would have been tragic if a child was injured! The PROBLEM at this point was that the staff gave us NO RIDING DIRECTIONS! Not even basic directions on how to hold the reins or control the horse! I've ridden a horse before, but a little refresher could have been useful especially handling a horse that is supposed to have an "independent" personality! We rode along guided by a child who rode alone, a man holding another child, and an English-speaking woman whose name I forgot. They were all quite nice but the child guided us in a wrong direction at one point. The area reminded me of southern California because of the mix of green and dried brown vegetation. Perhaps 30 minutes into our horse riding trip, my horse decides to stand still and urinate for the next few minutes! Everybody had moved up ahead. The man riding with a child who had previously brought up the rear had also gone ahead to hold the gate open LEAVING ME BEHIND! Leaving me behind is a big NO-NO because, my horse begins to gallop quickly ahead to catch up with everybody else! I cannot hold onto the horse as it runs, bouncing along the way, and I SLIP AND FALL OFF!!! I land on my right side and have the WIND COMPLETELY KNOCKED OUT of me! My body is shocked as I lied on the ground momentarily. As I struggled to stand up, I clutch my sides out of breath from having the wind knocked out. There are long bloodied scrapes on my right forearm to my right elbow, soreness along my right side and chest. I felt familiar pains as if I had gotten in a car accident! Overall, I was OK. No serious injury. I am just thankful that it wasn't any worse because the horse could have trampled me or I could have had a serious head injury! If it was someone else more vulnerable like a child or senior, a fall may have been really terrible!! Our ride ceases early because of my fall and our group heads back to the ranch. I walk the entire way accompanied by the woman leader. We make small talk with me asking questions about the ranch and she kindly offers first aid bandages and a couple small beer bottles to soothe the stress. We accept and are happy for these small tokens. After admiring the multiple friendly cats and dogs for a little while longer, we leave the ranch. We ended up only paying for the $10 deposit and not the remaining balance of $35 per person. I guess they're also hoping to avoid lawsuits! Strangely or sadly, the organizers never got back to us via text. Some simple changes in their process could have made our experiences much better and avoided my preventable injuries. Like I mentioned earlier- better directions, basic instructions on horse riding, and not leaving anyone behind- would make future rides SO MUCH SAFER. As wonderful the animals are, we cannot recommend Pretty Horses Rescue until these basic changes are made!

This was the highlight of our trip to Rosarito. Setting up the ride was super easy, I called in and they said they would get back to me with their availability. I tried emailing first and that didn't work so I chose to call instead. They got back to me over text and the person over text was very communicative and flexible! We got there and got a chance to see some of their animals like their cute ranch dogs (and puppies!) their horses who all had individual stalls with their names on them!! Also they had some little pigs and some birds!! After meeting our vaqueros we got on the horses which was made easy, and the vaqueros adjusted our saddles for us. They gave us a quick rundown of how to slow the horse down if needed by pulling back on the reigns. Off we went with the two vaqueros and two other vaqueros that joined us for the ride! I felt super natural on the horse despite only riding them a couple times in my life! For first times I would say don't be afraid to use the horses reigns and steer them, pull back if you feel like they're going too fast. My horse tried to stop and eat a couple of times but with a little prodding with my heel they got right back to walking, they seemed super well trained and never weren't calm. We passed through some farmland and the rest of their ranch and went through a canyon with some beautiful old oak and sycamore trees. We went through many different types of terrain and it was awesome seeing the horse navigate it. I had to steer away from low branches a couple times but it was nothing too hard. Towards the end the horses got excited to get back to the ranch to eat and they actually were trotting a little bit which was actually quite exciting!!! This place was awesome, I don't agree with the people that left the bad reviews at all. I felt like the vaqueros were there to help us if things turned south, and I felt super comfortable on my horse and it was a well trained horse. They even asked beforehand about our skill level with riding horses. The couple of times the horse did start trotting I was able to ease him to a speed I was comfortable with until I got the hang of it, towards the end I was actually having fun with him trotting! The number one rule is definitely pull back on the reigns if you start going too fast! Hold onto the reigns with one hand and the saddle horn with the other if you feel uncomfortable! Also don't kick it with your foot unless you want it to start going fast!! Steering is super easy, just pull the reigns to whatever side you want the horse to go towards! The directions to find the place were very clear, and the google maps location led us right to it. I even texted them to confirm the location and appointment the previous day and they confirmed the location that I had was the correct one. The road wasn't in bad shape at all a couple small puddles and that's about it. I will definitely be donating to this place and I will be telling all my friends. After seeing how they treat their animals first hand, I'm glad we rode horses here instead of the ones at the beach. Seriously check this place out on your trip to Rosarito, it's well worth the 30 minute drive. It's a beautiful drive through the countryside anyways!! Come into it with a learning mentality, remember my tips on how to steer and slow down, and you will have an amazing experience!! The people that left bad reviews should really consider going back and trying again, they sound like they need to lighten up a little bit!!!

A hummingbird nearly took my eye out a few minutes ago and I couldn't be happier. This place is very special. "Hidden gem" doesn't do the journey to find it justice but the hunt really paid off in the end. A perfect place to hide, unplug and really relax. Not too fancy but quintessential charming. The staff is hard working and very happy to be here. And Jim and TJ work their butts off to make sure everything is just right. I would recommend this oasis for reunions, corporate retreats, family getaways, destination weddings, and so much more.

Our guide Jose was excellent! He never ventured too far ahead, always making sure we were right behind him. We ended up popping a tire in the middle of our excursion and Jose changed our tire in addition to making sure we were all calm and uninjured. The terrain was a mix of hills, bumps, rocks, and portions of flat dirt road - not to crazy for us first-timers. Halfway though our excursion we stopped at Rincon Tropicana, a beautiful resort in the middle of the canyon we were driving through. The resort featured a monkey and other animals, in addition to beverages! Would definitely do this again! Highly recommended!
