It really PAINS me to write a NEGATIVE review. I really wanted to like and recommend this organization. The animals are adorable, the staff was fairly nice and the "non-profit" (unverified) in rescuing abused animals seems like a worthy cause. However, the cuts and scrapes, bruised sides, and realization that my INJURIES were PREVENTABLE gives me no other option but to write the TRUTH here! Falling off a horse could have been significantly worse if certain common-sense measures on safety were taken by the staff!
First, there are NO EXPLICIT DIRECTIONS anywhere to their ranch on the website. The Yelp app maps Pretty Horses Rescue to my Apple maps app. However, following the Apple maps app got us LOST! We drove half an hour on unmarked dirt roads only to be met by a BLOCKED OFF path! When we tried using the Google Maps or Waze app, the location is listed as "All the Pretty Horses" instead! At least this location is accurate even if the title is not! Compounding the problem, our texts to the organizers WENT UNANSWERED when we simply wanted to get directions!
After following Waze to the "All the Pretty Horses" location, we spotted some signs along the way that reassured we were at least on the right path. We finally arrived an hour late to our appointment but the staff was kind enough to let us ride. A mass of ranch dogs literally ran up to us when we stepped out of the car and it was a bit scary at first, but the dogs were friendly. In fact, all the animals including the kittens, pigs, and birds were so CUTE!
We each got onto a horse. I was apparently assigned the horse that follows its own path. It's fortunate that it was me instead of another child that rode this horse because it would have been tragic if a child was injured!
The PROBLEM at this point was that the staff gave us NO RIDING DIRECTIONS! Not even basic directions on how to hold the reins or control the horse! I've ridden a horse before, but a little refresher could have been useful especially handling a horse that is supposed to have an "independent" personality!
We rode along guided by a child who rode alone, a man holding another child, and an English-speaking woman whose name I forgot. They were all quite nice but the child guided us in a wrong direction at one point.
The area reminded me of southern California because of the mix of green and dried brown vegetation. Perhaps 30 minutes into our horse riding trip, my horse decides to stand still and urinate for the next few minutes! Everybody had moved up ahead. The man riding with a child who had previously brought up the rear had also gone ahead to hold the gate open LEAVING ME BEHIND!
Leaving me behind is a big NO-NO because, my horse begins to gallop quickly ahead to catch up with everybody else! I cannot hold onto the horse as it runs, bouncing along the way, and I SLIP AND FALL OFF!!! I land on my right side and have the WIND COMPLETELY KNOCKED OUT of me! My body is shocked as I lied on the ground momentarily. As I struggled to stand up, I clutch my sides out of breath from having the wind knocked out. There are long bloodied scrapes on my right forearm to my right elbow, soreness along my right side and chest. I felt familiar pains as if I had gotten in a car accident!
Overall, I was OK. No serious injury. I am just thankful that it wasn't any worse because the horse could have trampled me or I could have had a serious head injury! If it was someone else more vulnerable like a child or senior, a fall may have been really terrible!!
Our ride ceases early because of my fall and our group heads back to the ranch. I walk the entire way accompanied by the woman leader. We make small talk with me asking questions about the ranch and she kindly offers first aid bandages and a couple small beer bottles to soothe the stress. We accept and are happy for these small tokens. After admiring the multiple friendly cats and dogs for a little while longer, we leave the ranch.
We ended up only paying for the $10 deposit and not the remaining balance of $35 per person. I guess they're also hoping to avoid lawsuits! Strangely or sadly, the organizers never got back to us via text.
Some simple changes in their process could have made our experiences much better and avoided my preventable injuries. Like I mentioned earlier- better directions, basic instructions on horse riding, and not leaving anyone behind- would make future rides SO MUCH SAFER. As wonderful the animals are, we cannot recommend Pretty Horses Rescue until these basic changes are made! read more
