This place is not particularly cheap, nor does it offer foreign or fun food, but their selection of all the old favourites is not to be sneered at. Their sandwiches and salads are all made fresh on the day, and they have some mouth-watering fillings and taste combinations. I will recommend the tomato and mozzarella salad to anyone. The staff here are obviously told to ask you how your day is going, which could be a really awkward moment if their staff were McDonalds-like employees. Fortunately, they all appear genuinely interested, even at the end of the day, so you come away feeling valued and friendly. One thing I have noticed, although I'm not sure if it's just me, but their range of still juices (elderflower, cranberry etc) are impossible to get into! I struggled with a friend to get into my last one, and in the end only hacking at it with a key got us in. So maybe get a coffee. An added bonus to Pret a Manger is that it's right next to the cinema, so it's great for smuggling food into a film.

The Classroom - Smoked haddock and shellfish chowder with parsley oil

The Classroom

(2 reviews)

Who would've known that such an excellent restaurant was on the top floor of Cardiff and Vale…read moreCollege? My husband and I came here for a meal on a Saturday night, booking in advance and we both really enjoyed ourselves! BACKGROUND: The Classroom is led by a very experienced head chef and they train those studying culinary and hospitality at Cardiff and Vale College to help students get valuable work experience, which I'm happy to support! They also hold occasional cookery classes for the general public that you can book. All in all, the idea behind this restaurant is excellent! ATMOSPHERE: As its on the top floor (floor 5) of the Cardiff and Vale College building, the atmosphere is great. Open kitchen for you to see inside as the chefs prepare along with large glass windows for excellent views. The chairs are comfortable and it really models modern European fine dining! CUSTOMER SERVICE: Great! The waiting staff manager has worked in a Michelin starred restaurant before so he definitely knows his hospitality. We were greeted promptly with our coats taken and never had to flag down anyone for attention. Our meals arrived quickly as well and it was an extremely efficient service! FOOD: The food here at The Classroom is on a seasonal menu, so if you visit you probably won't be having the same stuff as me, but everything I had was delicious! ~ Starter: Smoked Haddock & Shellfish Chowder with Parsley Oil (£6.95) An excellent start to the meal. I love Smoked Haddock and this chowder had excellent flavours and tasted like the sea. There was a generous amount of haddock as well which I was pleased about and the parsley made for a well balanced finish. ~ Main: Glazed Jacobs Ladder, potato terrine, carrot purée, roasted white asparagus and Italian peas, crispy silver skin onions, red wine jus (£19.95) Really good! The beef was cooked perfectly and was extremely tender and fell off the bone. The carrot puree was extremely creamy and delicious and the onions packed a flavourful punch. My only complaint about this dish is I felt it could have done with a tad extra seasoning as the jus was a little bland but there was salt at the table so it was an easy fix. ~ Dessert: Stuffed baked apple, spiced mascarpone mousse (£5.95) The baked apple was stuffed with what I think was minced meat, and baked with a caramelised outside. Very delicious and the spices they used were fantastic! I especially loved the mascarpone mousse as I'm a huge fan of mascarpone. --- Overall, I would definitely recommend The Classroom to anyone. The prices aren't completely out of this world for a special occasion and my husband and I both loved what we had. I will definitely be back in the Summer to see what their Summer menu would bring!

The food is excellent, I highly recommend the lamb dish, but everything we had was really good. Interesting flavors and great textures, we got to enjoy new takes on classic meals. The service was also top notch, and their cocktails were a lot of fun, including the non-alcoholic drinks for those of us who drive and/or don't want to drink. Really great place!

Game-Changer! In a…read morefamily of foodies, whenever a food experience is truly spectacular, my father always quotes his Kentuckian Uncle when replying to "How is it?" - "It tastes like more" would be the reply. A broad smile - leading to a chuckle, every dish this evening at Heaneys "tastes like more." Service has been attentive, agile, warm, and accommodating. Chef "Tommy" has a different piece of music playing my head with each inventive dish - and yet despite the clear sophistication of his training - nothing about the place is fussy. I'm on vacation visiting Cardiff for the first time - had no idea I had to come to Wales for one of the most felicitous culinary explorations of my life. Even if the description of some dishes desn't excite initially - let Chef take you on a journey (definitely pick the tasting menu £42.5) trust him, his team knows what they're doing. Cheers! (Ps. Huge thanks to Oliver and his mates on the wait-staff for making my evening so special!)

The dishes were all interesting and beautifully presented. My only request would be a bit more time between courses. They come quickly. Our server was pleasant and friendly, and she remained so even after the restaurant became busy. She was working hard, but always remained kind and helpful. The restaurant is casual, but also upscale. We are visitors to Cardiff. Heaney's could be a successful restaurant in California Wine County. It has the same rustic chic vibe. My only request would be different "music." The thumping house music felt out of step with the food and became tiresome. Overall, I would recommend Heaney's to anyone who enjoys the adventure of a tasting menu. It was well worth the visit.

To say this restaurant holds itself to be a fish restaurant all the fish we had was overcooked. The steaks the party received were acceptable however the veal had a rancid taste. I recently took the Waterbus over from the Bay to Penarth (£4 return) with a couple of friends, and discovered this place. We had a quick drink (Pimms & lemonade, of course) and then headed back. But even that quick visit left a lasting impression. The staff were very welcoming, which was nice because upon immediate impressions, this is quite a classy joint. But everyone is welcome here and there were even a number of families enjoying food and drinks. Also, my friend ELLIE (who didn't want to be named) though that the establishment was called 'Erected' because of a sign in the stonework that said the building was erected in year ....! Oh, how that made us laugh. I will certainly be going back again to sample some of the cuisine here, as I hear only good reports.

The menu changes daily and offers a wide variety of chicken (anything and everything from a mild honey mustard to the HOT HOT HOT Bomber's own recipe scotch bonnet/ghost chilli Perkbomb) and pork options, and occasionally lamb, falafel or home-made fish fingers. The sandwiches come as small boys (a small soft or crusty roll) or big boys (a bap the size of your face!); alternatively they offer salad boxes or jacket potatoes if you don't quite fancy a sandwich. If you'd prefer something light, there's almost always a fantastic soup (I had carrot and coriander today), but if you're feeling famished I dare you to take on the atomic bomb which is a combination of any three meats and all the salad you like! Its location means that it's perfect for those working in Cardiff city centre (or the Bay) as well as those indulging in a bit of shopping, although I regularly travel out of my way to treat myself to a cheeky sandwich. If you've got time on your hands, I'd also suggest taking a seat and having some tea or coffee and a slice of cake. Having recently been awarded 5 out of 5 on the Food Hygiene Rating, it is safe to say that Bomber's cannot be beaten on quality, cleanliness or service; as well as doing a fantastic job of supporting local businesses by sourcing local produce.
