Moving Mom into Five Star Premier Residences of Reno was The. Best. Decision. Ever!
After my father passed away, my parents home in Gardnerville seemed too isolated for mom, especially since I lived an hour away in Reno. She was ready to downsize and wanted to live closer to me, so we visited almost every Senior Living Community in the Reno/Sparks area to see which she liked the best. After a few respite stays, and one false-start with a new facility on the south end of town, mom ended up picking Five Star. We both feel she picked the Diamond out of the bunch.
So much we love about this place ... where do I begin...? I think I'll start with Mom's own words about the shuttle and limo drivers:
"The drivers are excellent! Careful, courteous, personable, helpful and friendly. They always lift your groceries on and off the bus, and they put them in your basket or walker for you." [There are wheelable grocery baskets at each entrance for residents to borrow.]
Mom went on ...
"Even with a bus full of residents going to different locations, the drivers are amazing at figuring out how to get each person where they need to go with the least amount of time sitting on the bus. Also, they ask how long you want to be at your stop so you're not waiting long to be picked up when you are done."
Mom takes the bus everywhere:
- grocery store,
- mall
- doctor's appointments
- day trips to Tahoe & neighborhood tours
- Farmers Markets (which they added after she suggested it)
- special events such as live plays
- luncheons with her Red Hatter group
- and so much more.
The bus is a key element for mom to maintain her independence since giving up driving, which is HUGE for her morale and outlook on life.
Now we'll get into my favorite things about Five Star:
THE STAFF
For me, Five Star is head-and-shoulders above the rest because of their staff. From Ceci in Sales, to Rudy in the Dining Room (mom RAVES about Rudy), to Nannette in Assisted Living, Jerry at the Front Office, Wei in Accounting, ALL the folks in the Physical Therapy Center, plus so many others ... everyone does their job well, really seems to enjoy what they do, and knows the residents by name.
While you may find this at other facilities as well, it's the sheer number of staff and low turnover that really makes Five Star a standout. I think they have something like 200 people on staff, which I was told is more than at any of the other Senior Communities in Reno. Many of the key staff have been there for over 10 years. It's also impressive to see a strong staff and management presence even on weekends and holidays.
DINING
The Dining Room is open from 7:00am to 7:00pm, so mom can get meals on her schedule, not a facility's schedule. Plus, the menu is full of options that can be personalized and customized, along with daily specials. You can also get food at the bar (which has quite a lively happy-hour scene), and mom loves the Corner Café in the lobby where she can grab a quick salad, sandwich or soup, as well as pick up grocery essentials, such as small cartons of milk, water bottles, soda, tea, coffee, fruit and more.
Included in each resident's rent is a $600 monthly credit towards meals, and in the 2 1/2 years since mom's lived there, she hasn't come remotely close to using all $600 in any given month.
She also gets to cook in her room, as each apartment has a full-size refrigerator, microwave, and an electric oven and stove.
They also have special event buffets around different holidays, or just for fun - where family and friends are invited to come join the party. And the lobby and dining room are always decorated and festive for every major holiday.
PHYSICAL THERAPY CENTER
Another big plus is Five Star has an onsite Physical Therapy gym, with PT, OT and even Speech Therapy. Almost every senior can benefit from these therapies, and I've seen mom's health, wellbeing and physical stability improve measurably in their care.
SAFETY
The safety measures Five Star has in place give me immense peace of mind, without seeming overly intrusive to mom. Each resident is given an emergency button to wear, there are safety bars and pull cords in the bathroom, there are motion sensors in each room to alert if no movement has happened inside, and if you haven't checked-in by 9:00am, the Front Desk will call to make sure you are ok.
(A few times my mom didn't realize her phone was off the hook, so I called the Front Desk and they were kind enough to send someone up to mom's room to make sure she was ok, and to tell her to call me back.)
Those are just some of the MANY reasons my mom and I love Five Star Premier Residences of Reno. The best part is that Mom feels she's found a home and is part of a community. Bottom line: I couldn't really ask for anything more than that.
