I went to see Dr. Ken Arakawa as a last resort for my health symptoms. 1) Wonderful bedside manner, you really feel that he is listening to your concerns. Very caring 2) WOW! He has an X-Ray room and Lab IN HIS office! I was shocked really. AND...His X-RAY equipment is like supper HIGH TECH! I was asking the X-RAY tech how come he wasn't changing the films. He said they go automatically to the computer!!!! So, so convenient. You don't have to go somewhere else to get x-rays or labs. Saves you time and driving/parking. The X-Ray and Lab staff were very pleasant, professional and knew what they were doing (as an RN, I have had to do lab draws and escort patients to X-Ray so I know that this staff knew what they were doing. Plus as I said the X-RAY equipment was more high tech than Kaiser where I worked) 3) Ease of appointment scheduling, and the whole office staff were very pleasant and really made you feel like they care about you. Even making small talk. 4) Holy Cow! Dr. Arakawa was able to explain my condition, in the simplest layman terms ever! As an RN, I know a lot, and thought I knew a lot about my condition. The way he explained it, even a child would understand. This is what he told me: -Fibromyalgia: He said there are no tests to diagnose (because I asked and wondered how can he diagnose with out tests to confirm) -His answer: There are many medical conditions for which we have a diagnosis, but there are no tests to confirm. For example, migraines: there is no blood test or xrays/MRIs/etc to diagnose a migraine. However, we KNOW that migraines exist, and that they are a REAL physical symptom. In addition, he said that since the medicine that I am currently taking helps my symptoms, it adds to confirm that this is what I have. He said we will do a trial of one medication that is known to help this condition; and if it works, it will confirm his assumptions. -WOW! for me, that was the most amazing answer ever, and one that I as a healthcare professional could understand and accept. Here's the timeline. Wednesday: Foot fractured. Foot is dangling. It's bedtime and I'm old. Cut to 2:00am ER visit: I'm told to elevate for 24 hours, take Tylenol (not Advil...apparently Advil doesn't help bones heal, who knew. ) Then I was told to "call ortho." And they gave me Dr. Black as a referral. But, who doesn't love lying around with their foot dangling while their toes slowly transform into Vienna sausages? All the little piggies were absolutely not going to market tho...not on my watch. And there's nothing better than having your feet above your head ...so elevated rest and panic I did. What they don't mention is that even doctors have a work-life balance (as they should). So I spent the rest of the week and weekend marinating in swelling, fear, and Google searches until Monday, when calls were finally returned to schedule consults. Tuesday: I meet Dr. Black. Within minutes, she calmly confirmed all the things the ER didn't tell me (slash I didn't ask because it was 2am, I was in shock, and I just wanted to go home). Reality hit. Hard. I'll be honest--I was shopping around. Some doctors looked exhausted. Some looked like they were 12. Some couldn't or wouldn't take me. Some offices failed the receptionist vibe check (details matter). Dr. Black (and team) passed all of it. She was sharp, present, and human. I respected her immediately. By the end of the consult--a full week after my nephew chose chaos and my ankle doubled down--she confirmed I needed surgery. And then... I pulled out my list. Twenty-three questions. Yes, I counted. Yes, I gathered them from ChatGPT after I put everything in my Patient Portal from the ER and asked Chat to give me a list of questions I wouldn't know to ask about and questions their peers would ask too. No, she did not flinch. She answered every single one--clearly, patiently, without rushing me, without talking down to me, and without that tired, quota-driven energy you sometimes get in medical offices (no shade, it is a business). I cried during the Q&A. Not a full sob--but definitely more than a single dignified tear. (Also, shoutout to the movie Boys Don't Cry... respectfully, they're wrong.) It had been a full week of "hurry up and wait," and it finally caught up to me. Then she scheduled surgery for the very next day. Wednesday: Surgery day at Castle. I'm sitting there waiting for my knifing (jk), and Dr. Black comes in to check on me. Even then--even then--she made time to ask if I had any last-minute questions. I did. Of course I did. But it was more for post surgery. I asked about PEMF mats ( ChatGPT again asked me to look into it and ask her)...She gave me an honest answer: it couldn't hurt, there are studies, but she didn't have a fully formed opinion yet. That kind of grounded honesty matters to me. The surgery itself? About an hour long, yet somehow felt like a one-night stand where I woke up disoriented and immediately had to do the walk of shame. Shout-out to the whole surgical team: * the cute doctor who gave me a nerve block (while my ass was fully out because he asked me to flip over--sir, have you been watching Heated Rivalry because I'm obedient and blushing, call me Shane Hollander. * the nurses who asked me the same questions approximately 97 times...ONLY THE LEFT FOOT ANKLE (nurses were a little less impressed with me but I digress) * the moment I woke up to liquids being forced down my throat before being gently but firmly kicked out like, "Okay, you're alive, a hui ho. Malama your mama." All jokes aside: I trusted Dr. Black with a complicated foot with multiple issues surgery, and I'm a patient with a very anxious attachment style. She earned my trust completely. Skilled, direct, compassionate, and present when it counted--before surgery, during surgery, and in the moments where fear sneaks in. She's delightful and non fussy - not much of a hand holder...all things that spoke to me. Truly. If you need an orthopedic surgeon who listens, answers your questions (even the long list ones), respects your intelligence, and still has a soul--Dr. Brandee Black is it. 10/10. I had made the unfortunate mistake of having the fusion surgery for my lower lumbar hoping it would relief my pain. But it didn't. That's how I found my way to Dr. Tada. From day one he's been patient, understanding and thoughtful. He really listens to my concerns and has offered great advice. He's even referred me to a sleep specialist because my overall sleep directly impacted my health. He's never shied away from my million questions or list of ailments. But most importantly, I appreciate his honesty. He doesn't promise the moon but is willing to help find options that work best for me. And that is something that I wish more doctors would do. My previous orthopedic doctor had cleared me for neck surgery, but I decided to look into other…read moreoptions first. When I first saw Dr. Carlson about 3 years ago, my neck pain was a 7-8. I couldn't drive or sit at my desk for more than five minutes. The pain shot would shoot down my left arm, thumb, index, and middle finger. It felt like needles poking through them. He reviewed my MRI, and within two weeks I had my first epidural steroid injection. After a booster a couple of weeks later, I was pretty much pain-free, without pain meds or steroid pills. Recently, the pain came back, though not as bad (more like a 5-6). I was scheduled for another injection, had a booster about three weeks later, and was pain-free within a day or two. So far, Dr. Carlson is the only doctor who has gotten rid of my neck pain. He's friendly, patient, and takes the time to talk with you. His staff are also friendly and responsive.

It's smaller that big brothers Queens, Straub or Kaiser but from what I've heard, people appreciate the service they were provided. Clean, pretty easy to maneuver, as you enter the main doors, a dedicated information desk manned by dedicated volunteers can help you get to where you need to go. But of course on a visit I focused on the dining options and I have to say the food was pretty good, just a simple scrambled eggs, rice and corned beef hash (canned) and a taste of their fried rice. All enough to satisfy a mornings craving for sure. Not spectacular, but satisfying. Service, like the rest of the hospital seems to be friendly, helpful and efficient. It shows in the way the employees interact with each other. Normally one does not specifically target to visit a hospital for their cafeteria offerings. This is not the case either. But if you are at this hospital on business and are hungry or thirsty, their cafeteria called the Bistro is definitely a resonable option.

There was a point in my recovery where I had exhausted my coverage, but I was able to still continue my visits with an extremely low out-of-pocket cost. I'm not sure if the out-of-pocket cost was low because it was continuing my recovery with them or if that was their normal out-of-pocket cost, but it was somewhere around $8 to $15 a session. That is a deal in my opinion. If I ever needed to go to a recover center, this place would be my first go to!

Apparently saying this is a kiss of death with doctors as they will think you have unhealthy thoughts as to doing it locally. It was Ego issues towards me not wanting local surgery. What ever it was, he did not take heed to my lack of bowel movements. He kept saying that I would eventually go and not to worry about it. Same answer all the time until I was, by his records, over three weeks due for a bowel movement. I was still trusting him at this point. He then said he would make sure I was taken care of by Castle Medical ER department. I was turned away from my first visit to the ER and his office said they need to schedule my surgery to save my life now. I waited at home for another 5 days calling his office every morning and afternoon wondering when I would be saved from a blocked Colon. That Friday they told me that the girl scheduling me went home and I would have to call back in three days on Monday. It was at this time that I called a friend to take me to Queens ER. I was septic checking in, as per the nurses observations. I lost so much muscle, 42 pounds as well as coordination and abilities. Completely rotting in the ICU for over two weeks while they performed five surgeries to save my life. I lost my colon. I now have a bag on my hip for life which really sucks! An obvious Malpractice. I took my case to the Medial Inquiry Conciliation Panel. This is a panel that protects doctors from frivolous cases. In all of the Attorneys quotes about them is that,'' they never rule in your favor even if it is blatant.'' The panel looked at my records and the medical expert witness said that, "Dr. Kaminskas was guilty on one piece of paper. It shows that he tested you with a constipation touch test against your stomach every time you visited. It also shows him prescribing you Opiods. If it was constipation that caused this, then he is guilty on this one paper only." A very easy case to solve. I reviewed over 500 attorneys even contacting some on the mainland. I could not get the money or the attorney so I handled my case all the way to 30 days before trial. I could not afford all the fees I was getting from the Doctors Insurance Defense attorneys whom lived up to their reputation of stopping legit cases with as much paper work and BS they can throw in the way. I will say that Dr. Kaminskas was sued every year during the time that I was chasing after my law suit to settle with him legally. I do think he is a great neurosurgeon but his office apparently can not handle his patients. I think this is where I fell through the cracks. My emergency should have been the most important business during that week alone. He left me for dead. I am lucky I saved myself from their BS process.

That was a big mistake Back to dr report there are some errors like I got my MA degree wrong it's BA. I have Cirrhosis wrong I had Cyst on my liver. Then dr Kurano who specialized in RA told me I need to see physiatrist but his report that my injury originated from Arthritis and he couldn't tell if it came from work since I told him my mother have arthritis in her hand. The injury came from carrying 8 hours of carrying heavy stuff for three straight days and got aggravated twice. The third one landed me with emergency because the Janitor did not put a signage wet floor and the it was soaking wet which did not even squeeze the rug. I jerk my body to avoid falling. I could have died. Anyway, physiatrist recommended PRP but this dr against it because it's not have fda approval. In the meantime it was being used by a lot of dr as technology developed. Anyway,The assistant asked my documents and then told me that "Oh Im glad I have made copies " but only a few. It will give you a rating but reports seemed to favor insurance carrier to save some money. I learned so much about the dark side of IME. Some lawyers called them Insurance Medical Exam instead of independent. So now the insurance are using the report against me. This is the third IME I had.!The one I googled and had a bad comment which my lawyer able to changed. The second it was use four times because three times 0 ratings and insurance loves it. The fourth is 5 rating but only lumbar not thoracic. Finally, I got 5 with this dr but report is different than the last one. When I googled this dr Endicott he had one star rating and asked my lawyer to go to another dr in Honolulu club his name is Dr Peter Diamond my friend went there he received a report he deserved And I heard he have excellent reputation but my lawyer said he can't do anything because the insurance recommended it unless I have to pay my own which could cost up to $5,000.
