Professor Ximenes was a relaxed, friendly guy and said, "Of course!" when I asked if he was amenable to me training with his 9 am class. No mat fee, no drama about uniform. Solid jiu jitsu instruction, which I'd expect given his competition pedigree. I got to roll with his students and with him. Again: no drama, no ego. An excellent class and a great start to my day. I used to run a bit, but with the expanded summers in AZ now starting in March and continuing through November, running is unreliable because it is too hot outside! As a child I took Karate, and then briefly again in my 20s, now as a 40 year old I was looking for a way to get a higher level of activity and found the folks at World Martial Arts Academy. I took advantage of the free class offered through their website (just email them, their response is rapid) and was welcomed to the class. It was an excellent work out and was focused on training for health and performance, exactly what I was looking for in a martial art. I have taken classes from Jason, he is excellent. He has shown a willingness to work with people both individually and as a full class, using both patience and humor to demonstrate correct forms, steps, and technique.

All the instructors are fantastic with teaching techniques and they all are very personable. The focus is on technique and safety. I walked in without knowing anyone and in a short time, I feel like I'm part of a family. My fellow students are great and everyone helps each other no matter what age or skill level. A lot has happened since that time, but Aptitude continues to thrive and be an incredible training facility! Brooke and Roger are still super hands-on with training and teaching and it shows with how many "regulars" I see in the early mornings! I did take a brief hiatus during Covid, but I've been back for awhile now. I train twice a week with Nikki W, who is fabulous. Nikki pushes me just hard enough and combines bodyweight work with weights, bands, stretching, cardio and so much more. I find the key to these workouts is continuing to "surprise" my muscles and work them in different ways and Nikki does just that in each and every session. My husband joins me some of the time, so we often commiserate with how sore we are from our workouts for several days following! Mr. Wheeler has a great connection with kids, and as an example of practical self-defense skills, he teaches kids how to escape a stranger's grasp and coaches kids in how to deal with bullies and deescalate a physical altercation. No uniforms are required, and the school offers female-only and male-only classes. Mr. Wheeler also teaches adults, including a mom's class, weapons defense, and private lessons. He offers self defense classes for both kids and adults and attendees learn skills to use in realistic situations. I'm a regular member of his mom's self defense class and can't recommend it enough. You can even bring your littles and let them hang out while you do the class. Mr. Wheeler is an amazing teacher who truly cares about his students.

But, I also don't like working out and I was only doing that once a month. My husband had me try OTF, and after 2 classes I am hooked. Plainly for the fact that you can burn so much calories in just 30 min - hour and you don't have to think about your workout for the rest of the day. It's also a great start to the day as I'm a late riser and self-employed so this has given me a lot more structure in my day and actually makes me feel energized because, their heart rate monitors let me know when I'm in the right zone or pushing too hard or not enough which I also struggle with a lot. My favorite coaches are of course Coach Has, and Coach Taylor, however Coach Taylor I don't believe is at the Arcadia location often. I'm also a recluse by nature I'd like to add, and while people are genuinely nice and want to help you out when you're new at these locations, I love that they respect that I just want to follow the program at my own pace and stay in my corner.
