Our property felt like a botanical garden, far exceeding the standard run-of-the-mill landscaping jobs you see in most neighborhoods. What I didn't realize at the time was how completely unprepared I was to maintain this level of landscaping. Even after renewing the previous owners' contract with Broehl's (the local gold standard for lawn care and maintenance) there was still too much to do. Unfortunately, I have a black thumb for this kind of thing, and there's only so many checks I can afford to write to try and keep things looking good. So for the past few years my wife and I have actually invested money in scaling *back* some of the landscaping; essentially ripping out and replacing some of the more complicated beds that have steadily been beat on over the last few brutal winters and didn't look good any more. When we met with Joe, we were clear that we wanted nice-looking beds, but nothing that would be over-the-top difficult to care for and maintain. And we wanted clear sight lines down our front yard so we could see our kids playing in the street. The overall amount of work we need to do to get our property where we really want it is pretty staggering, so Joe discussed a phased plan that would allow us to get started without breaking the bank. Long story short, he and his crew ripped out the mess of bushes and plants and undergrowth that marked the front and center portion of our lawn. He designed a simple, but elegant bed that he said would look great but wouldn't be impossible to maintain. He took photos of our property in advance, and then simulated his recommended design over the photos via computer, allowing us to "see" what it would look like before we'd have to commit. As you can see from the photos, Joe and his crew did a great job. My wife and I couldn't be happier with the work. We get a ton of compliments on the before and after. (Unfortunately I didn't take pictures of the before, but trust me -- this was a huge leap forward.) Truth be told, you're really at a disadvantage if you cannot do at least some of your own landscaping. Professional landscaping is expensive -- plain and simple. And frankly, I hate paying for it. But as I said in my previous review, Joe is a no-nonsense, honest businessman. If, as the saying goes, a man is only as good as his word, Joe is a good man. Graded the 2nd level passed the steps to have it ready for the pool installation. They excavated the entire back wall and added fabric, clean stone and drain. The previous owners were avid gardeners and had extensive landscaping, front, side, and back. This City Slicker had no idea how to take care of it all, so I did the next best thing - I renewed the previous owners' contract with Broehl's. Well, let me tell you two things -- (1) I'm glad I did. I can't believe how great my property looks. And (2) It costs a small fortune. Maybe not in the grand scheme of things when you have high maintenance property like I do, but you are definitely paying top dollar compared to the multitude of cut-rate landscapers around town. John Broehl himself gets involved when he needs to, and he has a solid, reliable, and professional crew. Half my neighborhood in Colonial Oaks uses them, so that should tell you something. We've done a lot of net-new projects with Broehl's and every single one of them has resulted in great work. These guys know what they are doing. He found a vendor and according to him the vendor would not take credit cards - only cash or check. I trusted him and gave him check to buy the material. He immediately cashed the materials check and 50% down payment check for work from a check cashing location. This should have been a warning sign which we did not realize. He picked up material that he found and said would work and showed up a week or so later and said this material will not work - returned it and disappeared for 2 months. No work done. When we tried to reach him he claimed he was sick and his family was sick and was rude and disrespectful. Knowing we were stuck since he had all our money and nothing to show for it - we waited till he finally had time to come and work. He came back after two months on a Friday - brought the wrong material again - went back to return and get new one - only brought 20% of the material - asked for more money for the material - when we said no - only after you finish the work - started threatening - picked up the trove as a weapon - started bad mouthing and threatening to destroy all the work he had done if we did not pay. To top that off he called up the police and started telling them I was threatening him and his wife and refusing to pay him what he is owed - had to call the police myself to protect ourselves - never done that in my life. He looked very comfortable and smug - I presume he has done this a lot of times. All our money is lost - do yourself a favor - stay away from this scamster.
