"You know nothing, Jon Snow."
While walking our dog, Jaime, last Friday in Golden Gate Park. We just passed admiring Rainbow Falls and saw a sign on the side that read: Prayerbook Cross.
It had an arrow pointing to the left and I got curious. There's a path that leads up the hill on top of Rainbow Falls and emerged a huge Celtic Cross on top. Now, I've lived in the city for a long time and never knew that this cross even existed in the park.
I got excited and even posted an IG video story with an Irish-themed music from Game of Thrones. The cross stands 60 foot tall made with sandstone and designed as a Celtic-style cross to commemorate the first use of the "Book of Common Prayer" in California. It was erected in 1894 as a gift from the Church of England.
Carved on the front of back of the cross are stories and historical names associated with California (i.e. Sir Francis Drake) associated with the commemoration. However, the bottom sections of the cross has been chipped and missing chunks of the cross I assume from vandals over the years.
Even though it's not that old (126 years), it is still an impressive structure given the historical context and significance of the cross. I'm not a religious person by all means, but one has to respect a wonderful structure that is a part of the city.
Doing some research, it was also originally meant to be visible at see for ships sailing into the bay. The trees surrounding the cross has now dwarfed and obstructed the view, but it still stands tall and proud amidst the ever-changing landscape.
Truly a hidden gem in the city. read more
