For locals you can play football many different ways here with indoor and outdoor pitches with stands that cater for the fans with every home game. For those who want the best deal around though, its 70 pounds for a year's membership in the gym. This moderately equipped space has plenty of cardio machines from bikes to rowers. There's a small weights section that can become cramped quite often. But you get what you pay for and at £70 this place is a steal. The gym also has a big car park, bike locks, showers and changing facilities and the staff are very helpful. This could be the tip of a new fitness regime!

Birchfields Park was acquired by the City Council in 1887 for £9,930 from local landowner Sir William Anson! Isnt that interesting! Cheers manchester Citty Council. I like talking about the history of park that I review, but in this case there is literally diddlie squat to say about it. Its got a boring history. The most notable thing is a huge boulder in the middle of the park, which turns out to weight an amazing 13 tonnes! Meaningless boulder aside, the park is a great place for walks, picnics and football. Its also quite alright for children, unlike some of Manchester's more dodgy green spaces.

The park has a habit of getting swamped whenever it rains enough, but if you happen to get lucky and have a stretch of good weather, Birchfields is a good place to spend a summer-style day. Barbecues, people playing in the park, little kiddos running all over the place, this is a typical park when the sun comes out. It's fairly large as well so you're bound to find a spot to park yourself. There's often festivals or other events held here, so if you check out the local calendar you'll be able to attend some, convenient if you're living nearby.

Old Moat Park, named after the ward Old Moat near Withington, is a really normal park. The park has…read moreapparently undergone improvements in recent years resulting in it winning the Green Flag Award in 2005 and 2006, which according to the council is 'the national standard for parks and green spaces in England and Wales and benchmark of excellence in recreational green areas'. However, it is worth adding, that Old Moat Park, is just a normal, regular park. The site is comprised mainly of grass, termed 'amenity grassland' by the ever embellishing council. The council admit that the park is 'predominantly used for play, sports, informal recreation and dog walking by the local community', so basically, it's a normal park. If it's a normal park you're after, Old Moat is the place for you. Its always quiet which is a bonus and they do have a concrete football and basketball area which is excellent if the grass is too wet to play. There's also a wooden carving of an old man, which is very very creepy indeed. Other than that, normal park.

Played here 2 or 3 times. Nice quality pitch. Fences are high so less likely football is kicked over - if your not good. However, if you do kick it over, it could take at least a couple minutes to get it back. If in the most inconvenient place, even longer! You can either hire half the pitch - suitable for about 8-9 a side or the full match - for 11 a side games. The car park is at one end of the pitch - on a previous visit, the "gate" in the fence could be opened. This time, it was locked so you have to walk the long way around - only a problem if your lazy! Also, if people are playing on the full size pitch and the goals over the fence, there is a risk of car(s) being hit.

I play in the Wednesday 6-aside league here and I can report that it is a fun and (for the most…read morepart) good natured league to play in. We pay £30 per team which to be honest is over price, especially if you consider the facilities provided. The pitch we play on is not specifically designed for 6-aside matches rather a quarter of some bigger pitch. This means they make do with cones for lines and have the unusual situation at one end where the dead ball line (which is in line with the back of the goal) is behind the goal line (making corners from that end particularly awkward). Also the frequency and which we have to play we a over/under pump ball is often. Another complaint is the rules do not suit the pitch. despite the pitch being, perhaps too large, for 6-aside they insist on enforcing some 5-aside rules such as, 'kick-ins apposed to throw-ins', and, 'only the keeper allowed in the box'. Unfortunately, I like to play football and my team plays here so I don't have much choice.

Once all the fields were taken, even if we had booked one and we were there on time, yet no one was there to check that players were respecting their times. Lockers are provided to drop your stuff, but you have to pay 20p to use one. I considered signing to Sugden just after moving to Manchester because it's very close to uni. Therefore I took their gym induction to give a look at the place and at the machines. The gym is ok, not very big to tell the truth. I was actually rather disappointed with the induction itself, cause it lasted only five minutes, the instructor just hastily showed us the rooms, we didn't even have time to try any machines. Also, we were more than ten people taking the induction, and I was expecting something more serious and personalized since I was paying for it.

There are loads of sports halls and courts and stuff here, so lots of space to do whatever sport you're into - be that squash, badminton, basketball, circuit training, etc. If you're playing badminton like we do, then it costs just over a fiver to hire a court for an hour once you're a member. This isn't too expensive, especially when it's split between the two of us. The one thing that annoys me here just a tiny bit is the fact that you have to pay 20p for a locker and you don't get it back. It's quite cheeky to get you to pay for the privilege of having your stuff safe whilst you're exercising. Surely, after membership and court hire, that should just be a given.
