If you find yourself there for an extended stay, remember the nights can get quite busy. On Thursday nights, you'll find yourself battling to find the answer to 'What is the name of Spongebob Square pants pet snail' for the evening Trivia, and blaring out 'Equine' which is obviously the wrong answer. Don't worry the points don't matter that much... If you're in the mood for great atmosphere amongst good friends, taking in some local art, at this historic venue, then this is your new local.

Yeah, it's basically one of those places frequented by the young, meaning that there is a pretty decent selection of craft beers, and a decent menu as well. Oh, and the artwork on the walls is pretty awesome as well.

The…read morerooms are okay if a little depressing, bare-bones furnished, with one requisite painting hung randomly off-center over the loveseat (we had a suite). Furnishings felt a couple of decades dated, and the thin carpet lumped up in places. (We found a lone dead cockroach on the rug.) We felt compelled to wear flip-flops on it. And our windows on the 11th floor were sealed shut, couldn't even crack them a few inches for fresh air; we were hermetically sealed in. Bare-bones amenities -- the bathroom had liquid soap, shampoo and conditioner, and a hair dryer; but no body lotion, q-tips or cotton balls. The "kitchenette" turned out to be a large-ish closet with a few dishes, silverware, and glassware, a teapot and pod coffee maker with an assortment of teabags and a few coffee pods; but only a sink and TEEEEENY refrigerator that couldn't hold much more than last night's restaurant doggie bag stored on its side. I'd called the hotel ahead of our visit and was assured there would be a cooktop in the kitchenette, so I brought groceries for hot breakfasts and to cook chicken/burgers for picnic sandwiches -- but not only wasn't there a cooktop or oven, there wasn't even a microwave to reheat leftovers; and we couldn't cram half our bag of groceries in the micro-fridge. That p*ssed me off, a pointless lie that wasted money on the raw meat and veggies I'd brought along to cook. Minimal amenities here too -- no dish sponge, tea towels, paper towels, or dish soap, and no minibar snack offerings. (We specifically chose this place because of the kitchenette; we would have chosen a nicer place elsewhere for the same price if we'd known we couldn't actually cook or even reheat anything here.) The upside was, I wasn't remotely tempted to stay in and nurse the horrific headcold I'd caught -- the "meh" space pushed me to get out and do walking tours and see the city, balloon-head be damned. (I actually think just a standard room would be more agreeable -- no understocked and un-appointed kitchenette to disappoint, and less space to notice the lack of decor filling it.) Very nice front desk manager, and "Spice Alley" assortment of nice restaurants only a block away. The hotel would be handy for an overnight stop headed in or out of town; but not what you'd call a destination hotel.

I say "quick' "check in" because we were out of there pretty quick. The front desk staff seemed friendly enough at check in, but when we went to the room we found a total shocker. Complete filth. Trash left in the room, dust and dirt griming ever surface. The desk chair had a huge round impression in the seat and everything was rusted over. I booked the hotel through Reservations.com and am perplexed at how this place has the positive ratings and reviews. My only logical understanding is that the majority of positive reviews of this place are made up by staff and/or totally fraudulent. After checking into a disgusting room, we immediately went downstairs to ask to cancel our reservation, as we found the hallways and entire spaces we were in to just be extremely dirty. The front desk staff was courteous, understanding, and seemed to express that this happens quite often, as though it's no big deal. Here's where the bigger head ache came in. Hotels.com refused to refund the entire amount, so I am out nearly $200 because of a hotelier's decision to run a filthy operation. We had a five-night stay booked, totaling more than $700, however since we didn't give 24 hours' notice that we didn't want to stay at a trashy and filthy hotel, that we'd have to forfeit one night's stay rate. Un-freaking-believable. Reservations.com and this hotel should be ashamed of themselves for taking advantage of tourists the way they do, presenting illegitimate and unverified reviews. This hotel has a great location, but as they say, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

The gorgeous courtyard boasts (in a non-showy/non-obnoxious way) a beautiful fountain and an inviting pool encased by a splendid tall wall. The stetting is reminiscent (to me) of all thing ancient Rome and goddess like. Our twin room cost $144 a night (during the week) and I reckon it was an absolute bargain. Some, shall we say, interesting art adorned one of the walls....see attached pic to see what I mean. The heavy mustard curtains kept all morning light out and made for a cozy night's sleep. We even had a dimmer in the room, alluring and romantic could be two words I'd use to describe the dimmed night light. Except I was staying there with my sister. But the dimmer was still a fun novelty. They always are. Complimentary muffins made us smile as we trotted out the door towards Sydney adventures and the $15 a pop buffet breakfast was worth every precious penny. I look forward to my next stay at Arts Hotel. I hope it's not too far off....

True you can drink the soup, but it is not refreshing, nor does it quench ones thirst. So in order to rectify this drink free zone, a small shop, situated almost all alone in the north west corner of the centre lies. (This is a rough approximation, I rarely go to food courts with a compass.) This drink shop sells everything from water to fruit juices, bottle drinks, soda pop on tap and even alcohol; spirits, beer and cider. So often I have bought some spicy foods only to feel the need to coat my tongue in that liquid elixir known as water. That sweet soothing, scientifically labeled H2O. One of the only places to get a drink in the Sussex Centre. Definitely the only licensed place.

Well, on my last visit to Sydney I finally managed to do so, and I have to admit that I was impressed - very impressed. Okay, when I was there they didn't have any live music, which was a bit of a shame, but it didn't undermine the awesomeness of the place. This is basically a grunge pub, and if you know me, I love my grunge pubs. Oh, and they had a pretty decent selection of beers on tap as well.

It's a shit place to sleep granted, because it's right on the corner of a hectic intersection. I don't know why we stayed here, probabaly because it is close to COFA where I went to uni, but there was a Green day concert on at the Hordern so it was entertaining people watching none the less. Aside from my 90s nostalgia, this pub is a Cricket and more mainly an AFL pub. When the Ashes are on, it's on. I was here at 8:30 am for breakfast beers and a $7 Bacon and egg roll. The roll was naff, and $7 but what are you going to do at that time of day when you're having beers, for breakfast? Something needs to line the stomach. We were not alone. It was as if it was a Friday night, and full to the brim with pink shirted Cricket fans who were also going to the 3rd day of the Ashes test. Side note: If you arent a Swannies supporter then get out, forever. It still seems to cater mainly for backpackers. The interior was covered with old band posters such as the Annandale used to have. They have Coopers on tap. Win. They clearly cater for events like the Ashes and open early. Win. They seem to still have a stage, which I imagine supports live music. Double win. Good for a stop over on your way to some sports or a gig at the Entertainment Quarter.

Also the communication in English with the one kitchen employee was challenging. Not surprised that we were the only 2 customers for lunch around 12:30pm whereas all other places around are busy during these times. Would not recommend anyone to go here for food. I stayed here a few weeks ago with a large group of my students and their parents. The hotel itself was fine. Breakfast was included daily and was pretty good. We do wish they had free WiFi, but were glad to see some internet ready computers in the lobby for a cheap price by the minute. The rooms could have been cleaner. I noticed that the sheets had some stray hairs on them that most certainly did not belong to me. There was a sign in the room saying they were trying to conserve resources and if we left a sign on the bed and the hang tag on the door, the towels wouldn't be changed out etc... Well, we left all signs and everything was still changed out for new. Each day we started with 4 towels but only 2 were returned. Each evening we had to ask for 2 more towels. The shower is an off set up with no real divider between the shower floor and the rest of the bathroom. You can sit on the toilet and get wet from the shower. Strange. The huge warning sign on the microwave meant that no one would ever use it, so why are they even provided? We did take advantage of the laundry facilities. They are located on 4 of the floors. They aren't free, but they got our clothes clean! They also sell single serving packets of laundry detergent in each laundry room. Overall, the hotel saves itself with a decent breakfast and a prime location. I just wish the room were a little larger and cleaner.

The lobby staff were very helpful if we had questions. Breakfast was included with our stay. They had a lot of hot items and cold cereals, but no fruit. I bought some juices and snacks from the nearby IGA Marketplace. I think I had a handicap access room since the bathroom was large and could easily accommodate a wheelchair. The room had a small kitchenette with a microwave, fridge, plates, utensils, cups, and an electric kettle. (Come on America, drink more tea!) The bed was large and comfortable for me too. There was a flat panel tv and a table with chairs. The room was clean and a nice escape from exploring Sydney. The walls were pretty thin; I had to yell at some of the kids in our tour group since you could hear door slamming while lying in bed. The laundry facilities were great too. It cost about $8 for detergent, wash, dry. I only spent $2 since I just used the washer. I air dried my clothes in the room and they were ready to go the next day. This hotel had a great location; it was walking distance to shops, restaurants, and not too far from the Westfield Mall. Ha! Make sure you have a good map so you're ready to explore this beautiful city!
