AIR MAIL
Do you remember that movie "El Postino"? The one that won the academy award for best foreign film a few years back? Well this place is nothing like that romantic movie at all. It is a single tiny store front and is located in the heart of Marina di Modica. It is located in a beautiful spot only a few hundred feet away from the edge of the sea. In fact, I thought it was just a tiny souvenir store until someone told me it was the post office.
We walked in and bought a few post cards to mail back home. For all you young kids out there in Yelpland this is similar to an email. There was a time when the only way to correspond with another person was via the mail. Mail also takes a while unlike an email which gets to another person instantly. I hope I didn't date how old I am with all this talk about mail.
After getting our postcard we asked for stamps to America. The lady took out a giant book that had all of the stamps inside of it. It was literally a book of stamps. She might have blown off some dust from the top of the book but I can not confirm this embellishment of my story. She attached the stamps to the postcards and we were free to write messages to our friends in distant lands. The sad part is that we will probably beat our written postcards home but that is not the point. It is sometimes fun to go old school and send a piece of mail. You get to see the stamps of the country you are visiting along with a cool postmark. An email will never be that cool.
So next time you take a trip anywhere in the world then find a post office and grab some stamps to put on a post card back home. Your friends and family will be impressed with the nice gesture of a hand written note sharing your worldly adventures. read more
