Also known as the Luther Draffen Bridge, it was built by the Allied Structural Steel Company and opened to traffic in 1974. It carries traffic across the Tennessee River between U.S. 62 Calvert City Exit 27 and KY 453 Grand Rivers Exit 31. Don't be confused by the fact that you're crossing the Tennessee River - the bridge is entirely in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. The largest span is 534 feet long and each deck is 39 feet wide. I've visited multiple historical sites similar to this mound site, across the country. Of all the…read moreexperiences this one stands out for a very specific reason. All the others are just the mounds with their accompanying history explained. This is the first one I've been to that goes above and beyond just seeing a grassy mound and actually has a fully excavated, and protected site within it. I find this fascinating. This type of historical location is only as exciting as the person visiting it wants to make it. Having this extra layer of dirt removed to actually see what's under one of these mounds is much more gratifying. In any event, I think it's important to take a moment and imagine life at the time the mound was created almost 1000 years ago and how different it is from what we experience today, standing in the same spot. This is an excellent site with great documentation and a very friendly and helpful staff. Definitely worth taking an hour out of your day if you're in the area to stop by and experience this place.

Completed in 2018, the new Ledbetter Bridge carries US 60 over the Tennessee River and joins the…read morecommunities of Paducah and Ledbetter. It is an 1800 foot "parallel chord truss bridge" that replaced an old bridge that is much safer and includes a pedestrian lane. The bridge is a single lane in each direction, it is a concrete deck so none of that steel deck nonsense that tries to take your tires away from you. I'm not sure why they added the pedestrian lane - there's nothing in walking distance on either side. There is no toll to cross the bridge. [Review 1229 of 2024 - 261 in Kentucky - 22252 overall]

Always helpful, always well-staffed, always clean. Having a large family, we are there pretty often for movies, books, and the special programs. Its downtown location also provides convenient internet access for a large amount of the population, I think that's an excellent service to the community!

This is one of those weird roadside things that I just can't pass up. Buried behind some shrubbery…read morethat needs some serious maintenance, this is a water fountain for horses. Yes, I've seen hundreds of people water fountains and dozens of dog water fountains, but this is the absolute first water fountain for horses. There are two plaques. The one at horse eye level reads "1907 presented by the National Human Alliance. Hermon Lee Jenson Founder." The one at ground level, "This horse watering fountain moved by Beasley Monument Company 15 feet southward from a former location June 1, 1979 at the direction of H. Eugene Katterjohn, Jr. This marker placed September 1993." The fountain itself doesn't look clean enough for horses to drink from at the moment, aside from the fact that the bushes need trimming. Not too far of a walk for most people! It's a great photo opportunity for any Superman/Neill fan. The statue was dedicated on June 15, 2010. I don't know if Neill herself was in attendance at the unveiling, but she did feel honored to be memorialized. For those that don't know, Neill played Lois Lane on the 50's Adventures of Superman TV series, as well as appearing in other Superman-related projects. As the plaque in front reads, "Neill had acted in almost 100 movies..", but she was mostly known for her signature role. That role has given her the title, "The First Lady of Metropolis". Don't miss this unique roadside attraction, as you might as well get the full Superman/Lois Lane package!

This marker is located along Paducah's Broadway and points out the history of the city's name…read more It reads, "Paducah, only major Kentucky city with an Indian name, was named in honor of legendary Indian Chief Paduke by Gen. William Clark when he platted town in 1827. Village was first named Pekin. The Paducahs, Chief Paduke's sub-tribe of Chickasaw Indians, had lived and hunted in this area until land was taken by Jackson Purchase in 1818. Presented in Memory of Lee Anna Rhodes. Presented by James Rhodes." Paducah is the seat of McCracken County. It is located at the confluence of the Tennessee and Ohio Rivers, halfway between St. Louis, Missouri, to the northwest and Nashville, Tennessee, to the southeast. According to the Wikipedia entry, authorities on the Chickasaw have since said that there was never any chief or tribe of that name, or anything like it. The Chickasaw language does not have related words. Instead, historians believe that Clark named the town for the Comanche people of the western plains. So that's interesting.
