I did not have an opportunity to visit the Fort but I did spot this historical marker in Clear…read moreSpring that points the way. The fort is about 6 miles from here, so this is less a historical marker and more of a billboard advertisement. The fort does look way cool https://www.yelp.com/biz/fort-frederick-state-park-big-pool and it's bookmarked for a future visit to this spot on the Potomac River. The marker reads, "Fort Frederick. Maryland State Park. Colonial stone fort built 1756 for Province of Maryland by Governor Horatio Sharpe to protect frontier against French and Indians after Braddock's defeat. Detention camp for British prisoners 1776-1783. Occupied 1861-18862 by Union troops. George Washington was here July 1756 and June 1758." [Review 15129 overall, 631 of 2021, number 605 in Maryland.]

From there, it would stretch westward to the wild west frontier of Ohio. Four miles west of Conococheague Creek, the new road bisected land owned by Martin Myers. Farmer Myers decided to become a land developer, and in 1821 he laid off lots on each side of the new road. On one of his lots, next to a clear spring, Myers built a small log building where he made a sold crocks and jugs. The new road brought thousands of pioneers through "Myersville." Next to Myers' store, a small log hotel sprang up, which came to be identified by travelers as "the-hotel-at- the-clear spring." Here on Cumberland Street is a marker that points the way down an alley to the original spring. It is not well lit and is not handicapped accessible. And the spring itself does not seem to be moving very quickly so I opted not to sample the water this afternoon. [Review 15124 overall, 626 of 2021, number 601 in Maryland.]

It has the same text on both sides and reads, "The Bank Road. (The Cumberland Turnpike Road). The portion of this highway from the west end of the Conococheague bridge to Cumberland (40 miles) was built between 1816 and 1821. The Banks of Maryland financed it by purchase of the stock." The Department of Transportation has an excellent look at the history of the road at https://www.fhwa.dot.gov/infrastructure/bankroad.cfm that is worth a read. It's interesting to think about how things used to be before the superhighways were built with asphalt and concrete. We take it for granted that we can zip along at 70 miles an hour uninterrupted. I cannot believe this hasn't gotten more coverage, but the Thurmont Police Department is doing the work of gods..literally. This past year (in only 2 months of intense undercover work) this department single handedly ended the War on Drugs. Who knew that the criminal masterminds of the Nations Evil Marijuana Cartel were operating out of a small towns' fast food joint??? Well the savvy officers of the great town of Thurmont that's who. In only 2 months of work they took 5grams and 2 pills off the street. That's enough to get 2 kids high for a few days!!! I feel safer already. Going to sleep now, only because I feel safe knowing that we are all under the protective wings of the Thurmont Police Department!! Thank you and God Bless!!

When I pointed out the smell of alcohol lingering from her breath and another eye witness pleaded that she saw them drinking, the officer answered with "well". That's it, nothing else. I'm told that the girl driving around drunk all the time is a daughter of one of thurmonts police officers And that she gets away with anything. I honestly witnessed this with my own eyes, when two out of three officers were inappropriately flirting and laughing with her instead of doing their job. One officer even told her " just get to where you need to be "and laughed, even after I asked if the police were going to do something about them drinking and driving three times!!! Something needs done! laws are laws no matter who you are!!
