I am a licensed clinical social worker that works for an organization that only takes patients under one type of coverage and I am often in need of referring patients for individual and couples therapy in private practice. The Positive Change Counseling Center has been my first choice for years to refer patients to. They have been nothing but professional, kind, and helpful in assisting patients from their initial contact to the termination of services when clinically indicated. Their ability to collaborate and treat patients with respect, care, and concern has been unmatched with any other agency that I have worked with. As a professional, I am appreciative of their ability to maintain legal and ethical boundaries with patients and external agencies. There are several agencies in San Diego that do not abide by these guidelines that I find troubling. Every encounter that I have had with The Positive Change Counseling Center has always been pleasant and professional. The therapist was nice, but the cancellation policy of the health"care" entity she works for is way too punitive. I never miss appointments, but still, I won't expose myself to a policy that pushes any risk that comes with having a business onto clients. I understand having a fee and a 24-hr general policy, but to inflict such a high rate onto clients even if a last minute illness or emergency arises is unreasonable and unethical. What do they want, people showing up sick to infect the therapist and every subsequent client that therapist sees? That is what is implied with such an inflexible policy and there is no other interpretation for it. Profit first, therapist well-being way lower on that scale, client well-being at the very bottom. I'm not sure where the actual service or "care" falls on that scale; I guess it doesn't seem to me to be present at all, not in the eyes of the business anyway. read more

Never going back there. My daughter got very ill and was not able to keep her appointment. I let them know first thing in the morning, her appointment wasn't until late that afternoon. But they still charged me $95, not even my copay rate of $35 because I didn't give them 24 hours notice, even though the day before was a Sunday and I have no clue how she was going to feel in the morning. They still refused to work with us and had zero sympathy for our situation. Absolutely horrible service. I will find a more compassionate and understanding situation for my daughter. read more

Absolutely useless practice tried a number of times. My insurance keeps sending me a list with them on it. Going to notify insurance they say they do not take new clients or insurance in some cases . Tried too many time with this group no wonder people with mental issues are getting worse by the day. Something needs to change. So discouraging! read more

My daughter loves her therapist so I give 4 stars for her! 2 stars because I canceled her appointment when she came home from school with a fever and terrible respiratory flu last week. I canceled the day of the appointment within 24 hours and they charged me $85. I requested the fee be reimbursed and I was denied. Next time I will send her with a fever and contagious illness to avoid being charged and will instead possibly infect the entire office. This is the message they are sending by refusing the fee waiver. Way to be understanding and flexible PCCC. Shame on you. read more

Therapist was awesome, would give her a 5 star. Billing is different issue. I sent my insurance information to the billing department and told me a specific copay. I started going weekly because of this information. After a month and a half I got a letter from my insurance company that I owe money. I talked with the billing department and they told me I am out of luck doesn't matter if there was a mistake. Kept blaming my insurance and not taking any fault in the matter. Whole process seems a little off to me. Tell someone a specific copay that is low so you come in more, so they can then get more money out of you. Seems like something they should realize pretty fast and let the customer know. Would not recommend because of the companies attention to detail. They aren't willing to make it right and take some of the blame. Go elsewhere. read more

To piggy back on another review, I was very discouraged with Positive Change when therapy was cancelled for a family member without warning, without a referral to another therapist or without recommendations (therapist was no longer with the practice). I attempted to call several times to schedule with another therapist. I received no explanation, no return call. Nothing! The therapist we had seen was amazing, but the management of the practice was absolutely horrible. It wouldn't surprise me that they would even read these reviews (which they should) and follow up. My recommendation is, keep looking and go elsewhere. read more

i was searching for therapy and got recommended to Positive Change. My first therapist was amazing yet she sadly left to join a different office farther away. i got recommended to another therapist and she was amazing as well. I got a call from her the day of my appointment and she told me that she was let go and that was it. Positive Change did not notify me, nor help me get in touch with a new therapist or even recommendations for different offices. I have needed therapy since i was 3 years old and i am now 18, 17 at the time this all happened, and therapy to me is a necessity. It has been about 6-7 months since this and i have yet to hear anything from them. If you are searching for constant therapy or are at risk, i do not recommend going here. read more

Very disappointed in this business. Sent an email through their website to see if I could schedule with one of their providers, and received emails back saying they didn't have any available providers that would accept my insurance (I have very good coverage with Blue Cross/Blue Shield) and would only accept private pay. They are misrepresenting themselves on their website advising they do take insurance - per their website: Insurances accepted include: Aetna, Anthem Blue Cross, APS Healthcare, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Blue Shield of California, Ceridian, Cigna, HMC Healthworks, Magellan, Optum Behavioral Health, Tri-care, Triwest CHOICE, United Behavioral Health, United Health Care and various EAP's. Seems they only want to help people that have money to pay out of pocket. read more

I am a therapist in the La Mesa area. When my case load is full, I will often refer clients to this practice. The owner is experienced, knowledgeable and compassionate. I also have several clients who have their children receive therapy at this practice. I will often hear how satisfied my client's are with their children's care. Positive Change Counseling center also takes a wide variety of insurance along with high trained clinicians with many different of specialities. read more

This place does not deserve your business. There is an urgent need for the directors to reconsider their basic policies. I wasn't able to schedule an appointment for my own daughter without her father's permission. We had an appointment already scheduled and they cancelled it. Once I provided proof that I had sole legal custody, they said they were no longer taking new clients. read more

I took my teen daughter to Positive Change when she was struggling with serious depression and anxiety. She had a great connection with her first therapist, and when that therapist had to move away, we were concerned that she might not click with the new person. Fortunately, they hire good people! The second therapist was also terrific, and helped provide a different perspective for my daughter. Happy to say that my daughter is now doing much better, and that I would recommend Positive Change to anyone (and I have!). read more
