When I come to England, this is on my go to list. A very eclectic menu featuring a stone baked selection of steaks. Starters are amazing. I had the chicken liver spread and my guest had mussels. Many others to pick from. The featured soup changes daily. Our main courses on this occasion were sea bass, prawns, French country chicken, and lamb. We were not disappointed. Also, the presentation was excellent with hot plates for the entrees. The Sunday Roast is worth the visit. Very delectable deserts are available from brûlée to ice cream with fresh fruit. GM has a charming bar area if you just need a drink. The outside area is nice. The restaurant is secluded from the main road So please go with some friends, but please blindfold them so we can keep the Grumpy Mole our little secret place.

The staff are friendly although sometimes not the sharpest (for example, brought water to the wrong table, took awhile to tidy away our empty dishes), but these fairly minor things that don't detract much from the pleasure of the meal. The food were beautifully prepared and presented, using very fresh ingredients. I had the crayfish salad to start which was dressed in a thai-chilli mixture that wasn't particularly spicy but quite flavoursome, colourfully presented which really whetted my appetite. My main of seabass and prawns in a white wine cream sauce was delicious, although the baby prawns were slightly disappointing (but that was partly my fault as I had envisioned a couple of large tiger prawn swimming with my filet of sea bass). I also had the chocolate roulade to finish, which was light and fluffy (and very naughty for lunch!). One of us had the beef stroganoff and the portion size was absolutely huge, but we felt it might have been compensating slightly for the lack of 'oomph' (although we all have a slightly different expectations of what a beef stroganoff should be like as there are so many variations!). The beef was very tender though and it was certainly a pleasant dish. Another one of us had the venison wellington that was perfectly cooked. All in all, the Grumpy Mole was nice pub for a (rainy) day to have a drink (or few) and food as it was so warm and welcoming inside. There were also some outside seating immediately in front of the pub, but we'll have to come back on a sunny day for that!

Booked online for a few weeks ahead to celebrate 2 family birthdays on 12.02.22. Waited nearly…read more30mins for our order to be taken at which point we were informed that the only choices were from a somewhat unappetizing set valentines menu at £60 per head. On querying this, as this hadn't been made clear on booking, one of the staff (who we later found out was a co-owner) came over, she told us it was shown on the website if we scrolled to the bottom but my daughter who booked said she hadn't seen anything and checked her confirmation email but there was nothing mentioned there either! We asked to pay for the drinks and leave but were then told reasonably bluntly that we would still be charged the £60 per head regardless and said she'd leave us for a while to think about it. A further 20 minutes later and still consoling my daughter, who had been reduced to tears thinking she had ruined the evening, we managed to attract the attention of a member of staff and placed our order. I ordered fillet steak medium rare, it came out well done so it got sent back, it then came out again and it was blue, when it arrived for the 3rd time it was rare but mostly edible and as everyone else had finished eating I decided to accept it. The owner ignored us for the rest of the evening although the manager did try his best to improve things and provide good service even asking the singer to make a birthday mention for my husband and daughters partner which was nice and at least made us laugh when Michael was sung happy birthday to as Michelle!! When the bill arrived we said we were not prepared to pay the service charge based on initial poor service and subsequent very obvious deliberate avoidance as well as the steak having to be returned twice. Talking to the manager during various conversations about why we wouldn't pay the service charge it turned out that the co-owner was well aware my daughter had been reduced to tears so said she wanted to give us space ??? I was in the hospitality industry myself and if you have an unhappy table then its very poor hosting skills to decide to ignore them all evening the least that should have happened is for her to come back over, apologise for the misunderstanding "however it happened" and check if everything was now in order. On talking to another customer whilst having a cigarette outside they had found themselves in the same situation, couldn't eat the starter, chicken main was dry and they actually decided to leave before their dessert. Won't be visiting again.

So it was nice to see some unique dishes on the specialities section of the menu. We chose the chicken dhakeshwari, which was a mild dish garnished with mango and almond. It was like a pasanda but the mango added a nice fruity note to the sauce. Our other main dish was the chicken chettinad, which included roasted coconut and mixed Indian seeds in a hot sauce. The coconut added a nutty flavour and the heat of the chettinad made a nice contrast to the dhakeshwari I enjoyed the distinctive flavours in the main dishes and the accompaniments - papadums, mango lassi, naan and pilau rice - were all delicious Service was friendly and efficient. We will be back to try more dishes on the specialities list

Chillis is not one of them........ The food is excellent quality, well presented and reasonably priced. Finally there's a real option to find quality meals that will hopefully draw locals and visitors alike, away from the chain restaurants and coffee bars that have taken over the high street in recent years. I imagine other independent restaurants are going to have to up their game to compete now too - here's to healthy competition raising standards. The cute interior design, with a contemporary Art Deco twist and mellow jazz playing at an unobtrusive level in the background creates a great atmosphere. If there's any criticism to be made it's that the drinks can take a while. We've been back 2 days running already and I'm sure we'll be back again.
