I have been coming here to do my taxes for a few years now based on the recommendation of my aunt, who has referred countless clients to Thomas Porta. After getting my taxes done this year he quoted me $150. I noticed he overcharged me $30 and overcharged my aunt $100. When she called his office he was EXTREMELY rude and unprofessional, stating that he can change the prices however he pleases, and then hung up the phone on her. When she sent him an email he stated that she wasted his time and will be dropping all the clients she recommended to him. I don't know where the entitlement comes from but that is no way to run a business. If he wanted to raise his prices that's fine but taking my credit card from my hand and telling me you are going to charge $150 and then actually charging $180 is just unprofessional. We were delighted with the service we received from Mr.Ponta, and he charged us less than half what our previous, high priced, tax accountant in Albany,CA had charged us for our easy tax returns for the decade we had gone to him. He's a real a**hole. I would NOT recommend this business. I came in and he never introduced himself. He asked for my ID and placed his fees in front of me. I told him I had questions about the process and that I wasn't sure if I would be signing that day. He said, "if you're not signing today this meeting is ended because I have things to do." Sorry, I hate to say this but, he was clearly over burdened and seemed distracted during my appointment. He quoted me an initial charge, then increased the amount by $100 and then wanted an extra $180 to go over my return, which I had to fix myself. So, $530 for something that looked identical to a Turbotax return? A waste of time and money for us unfortunately. read more

Based on all of the negative Yelp reviews, it's apparent Thomas Porta could care less about the reputation of his name and business. I've been a client for the last 7 years. I originally was with Bittner taxes and then transitioned to Thomas Porta when she closed her business. While he's always seemed somewhat strange, our taxes were always accurate and done in a timely manner. During our most recent visit, we completed our taxes and he quoted and printed out the invoice for his services. When I checked my credit card invoice, I was shocked to see he charged an additional $100. When I called the office for additional details, he told me the print out and verbal quote was an error and that he "meant" to charge the extra $100 but forgot to tell us he would be doing so. He told me he didn't want to argue about it and he wouldn't be reversing the charges. He then hung up on me. The most shocking part is that he's willing to lose long term clients to steal a little extra money....it's actually sad and pathetic. Currently, I'm in the process of filing a complaint with the BBB and I've already launched a fraud complaint with my credit card company. Thomas Porta took over the bulk of clients from my former tax preparer at Bittner Tax in Vallejo. Last year, one of his colleagues prepared my taxes but never got back to me on an amended return that I had requested. This year, I met with Tom personally as the last appt. on a Saturday at 8:00 p.m. When he discovered that I had not brought in everything that he needed, he asked me to "guess" on certain items, which I did, then followed up with the actual documents in question the following day via email. Apparently, he was unhappy with the fact that what I had guesstimated and what the actual documents said was cause for him to reply to my email asking if my tax return was ready in the most rude, unprofessional, unwarranted and truly anti-social manner I have ever read from someone whom I had just paid almost $200.00 to prepare my return. I was dumbfounded by his lack of professionalism. I simply asked for a yes or no answer and received a diatribe of nonsense and untrue statements as a reply! This guy is lacking in social graces and is downright rude. I am taking my business elsewhere and would caution anyone else to do the same. You can be treated with respect and dignity without being ridiculed by an annoyed tax preparer. Not worth your time or money. read more

Do not go to this office - wish I could give it 0 stars. I filed a tax return with him months ago, haven't received a refund yet, and can't find any information about it when trying to look it up online. I called the office, got a call back from Thomas a couple hours later, and was told that he "forgot" to file it. I asked for a refund since he didn't do his job properly, and he said no. No attempt whatsoever to reconcile the situation....could have at least offered a partial refund, but his answer was just flat out no. This man does poor business and does not deserve yours. Last few years my husband and I have gone to a couple of different tax places including H&R block and private CPA and have been thoroughly disappointed with our outcomes and vibes where it didn't feel like they were trying to give us our maximal write-offs but Fred was very nice and was very helpful and although we did owe money, he have us the feeling he was on our team. WATCH OUT!!!!!!! Mr. Thomas Porta is a lair and all he cares about is money. He is very careless and does not pay attention to detail. GOING TO HIM WAS MY BIGGEST MISTAKE. I went to Mr. Porta to interview him in order to make a decision if he was the person I wanted to hire. The office told me the consultation is free,but once I got there he demanded to see my document and entered some data into his computer. Meanwhile I was asking questions to make a decision if he was a right account for me. After few minutes of this process which made me feel very uncomfortable I asked him for my document back so i can leave. He asked to get paid and i said for what...I had not agreed to hire you. I did not sign or gave verbal agreement of any kind to him. I protested and left his office; he chased me out side and pushed me into the ground trying to take away my personal documents to keep as a hostage. He broke my fingers, scraped my knee which I got five stitches going to ER that night. This was a short version of my experience with him. I wish I could give zero or negative stars. This review is in regards to Patrice Porta, who has done my tax returns for 2-3 years. She did my 2017 tax returns in February 2018, and the state form was incorrect, needing an amended return. By phone, she indicated the amended return would be completed the first week of May. When it wasn't done, I called her again and she said it would be done in June. Same thing again in July, twice in August, then twice again in September. The amended return still wasn't done, so I called her again 10/18/18. She said "thanks for reminding me" and said that I would receive the amended return by 10/24/18. It's now November 2018 and I'm still waiting for it to get done. I figure there's no point calling about this anymore. I may have to pay another CPA to do it for me when Patrice should have been able to do it by now at no charge. Is this laziness, unprofessionalism, or both? read more

Porta and his wife Patrice are both rude, disrespectful and employ people, Mila in particular, that are just as rude and disrespectful as they are. These people are worse than kids you find on a kindergarten playground; this is how childish they all act. If you do not agree with them on any point they are quick to yell and insult you. This law firm was used to collect rent on my parents behalf. According to the renter (after this firm was fired) rent was paid on the 1st of every month however the money was never paid to us on time .. it was always paid after the 5th of the month and on occasion at the END of the month. All manner of excuses were given. Any documents that were asked for was met with attitude and disrespect as if my parents had no right to ask for them. It is a shame one star had to be selected because this firm and people deserve nothing! Save your money and find another law firm that will be there for you and not this poor business establishment! Do not be fooled as they are nice and "there for you" when you are first talking to them but once you employ them all manner of niceness disappears! read more

I have been going to Mr. Porta for several years in a row, now. I came to him about 4 years ago, went to HR Block the year after, lured by a lowered fee coupon, was very unhappy with the McDonald's approach those big tax prep companies take, and went back to Mr. Porta the next year and again this year. Before I bought my house, I had done my own taxes online for decades - but if your life does not fit the cookie-cutter forms, you need a little more expertise. Mr. Porta has always fit me in when I needed an appointment, and has always done very well by me. Because he is in such high demand - especially near tax deadlines - sometimes the previous appointment may go a bit overlong. Yes, I've had to wait a little bit after my appointment time for my session to start, but it's never been too bad - less than my dentist & doctor appointments usually make me wait! Budget in a bit of wait time, that's par for the course. (Even with the HR Block appt, they made me wait). If your appointment is early in the day, it's probably no issue - the later in the day (evening) you have your appointment, the more likely you might have to wait 15 or 20 minutes. His expertise and knowledge are worth it, and I found his fees reasonable - once I compared other choices for the kinds of forms and situations my taxes require. I recommend him to my friends and to other Vallejo residents. read more

My mother used Tom Porta to do her taxes for years. Unfortunately, she also hired him for estate planning. Shortly after she died in February, I contacted Tom to ask how to proceed as executor. He brushed me off and told me to contact him after April 15, since it was tax season and he was "too busy" to deal with estate issues. In the two months (!) while we waited for him to fit us in, we discovered how vague the estate planning documents he prepared for her really were. Ultimately they created more family problems, rather than making the process easier. In addition to being unhelpful, Tom was often downright rude -- he was a half hour late for the meeting we waited two months for, spent the majority of the meeting slowly retyping forms that we had completed in advance and brought with us, and then rushed us through before we were done by telling us we had "20 minutes left." After I paid the bill in full, his office billed me twice more for the same amount. I had to call and ask his staff to look for the check, which of course they had. Finally, when I sent him a polite email asking him to clarify a lingering concern I had, he sent back an obnoxious, unprofessional response that didn't even directly address my specific question. I can only hope that he's better at tax preparation than estate planning. I wouldn't recommend him under any circumstances. read more
