This massive gate is at one end of the Cassaro Vittorio Emanuele (the other is the Porta Felice by the seaside) and near the Cathedral and the Royal Palace. The gate was originally build to celebrate Charles V's victory in Tunis (back in 1535). At the time, they called it the "Porta dell'Aquila" ("Gate of the Eagle") but Sicilians being Sicilians, it is simply known as the New Gate.
The structure was very heavily damaged by fire in 1667 and then was repaired and that work completed in 1669. You can't hardly tell.
On one side, the facade presents images of the Moors defeated by Charles V.
The gate is the border between the historic district of Palermo and on the other side, it's definitely the "city" side with traffic, noise and crazy Sicilian drivers.
