This park has it all. Lots of open, green space. A large pond covered in lily pads. And an…read moreinteresting and troubled history. This area used to be part of a palatial house and gardens constructed in 1703. The house fell into disrepair in the early 20th century, was damaged by fire in 1947, and was finally demolished in 1959. In 1998, the county council voted to rezone the 225 acre area. What used to be a large forest with many trees in poor condition is now developed buildings and this 72 acre park. There are fewer trees than before, but a wall of trees shields this park from the major surrounding roads. Footpaths take you throughout the park, with wide open, grassy space all around. There are some people here, but not many. It's mostly quiet solitude everywhere you go. There are play areas for kids, exercise equipment that uses your body weight as resistance, and a community garden. The garden was unfortunately close when we visited. The northwest corner of the park connects to a shaded trail that continues for 800 meters (half a mile). There are no parking facilities at the park, which enhances its seclusion. Which is great if you are a resident or staying in a hotel nearby.

It also has a lovely playground for the wee ones which even has a toilet block which is a great benefit as most parks don't have facilities anymore. One thing missing though is the amount of trees as when i used to walk in the forest it was wall to wall trees but now has a very small amount and is a park now rather than a forest which can sometimes be a pity in a build up city but the demesne is a worthy gem for the northside of the city. It does however lack parking and i find having to park in the apartments visitor spaces a bit of a nuisance as i feel im intruding. The park needs to offer proper parking for visitors the same as any park n Dublin does.

It covers the two neighbourhoods of Glasnevein and Drumcondra. The park is just over 7 hectares in size. The park has a fine selection of trees, a beautiful flower garden, and a popular playground. There is also a new pedestrian bridge. Great spot for a picnic or to have your lunch before catching a game at Croker.

Because the park is so large, you never get the sense that it's overcrowded. There are so many secluded walk-ways and sheltered benches. There's a wonderful balance of shade and sunlight. The park is alive with different kinds of vegetation: trees, flowers and bushes. Popular with locals in the area, many visitors play football on the pitch. Some prefer to jog around through the many interconnected trails. Still others see the park as the ideal place to walk the dog. On a summer's day, I can think of nothing more relaxing than reading on the grass.

One of the Italian students quibbled over the €20 price. One of the Irish kids roared, " We cycled all the way here! " I heard a scuffle and they cycled away. I was disgusted to see this happen so brazenly in a family park. The park itself is very spacious with lovely old trees and seasonal flowers.

The gardens dated back to 1795 when they were founded by the Dublin Society (later the Royal Dublin Society) and are a massive collection of some 20,000 living plants. And like the cemetery, it's free! Glass houses and gardens and walkways and benches and just beautiful flowers and blossoming trees and so much green. Even in early September as we're moving from Summer to Fall. I love that this is free and I think Dublin could do more to let people know that! The rest is great. Little pond with a fountain. Little isle there with the swan nest. Some ducks. Small river beside at the back there. I like the fact that this park is not as flat as others. Looking at how it looks…read moretoday I find that hard to believe with it's clean flowing river in which I've seen people fishing and well kept grassy areas. When I walk through this park I find it peaceful and the ducks and swans on the wee lake seem to like it too. There is also a golf course in the other side of the river. If anything bad has to be said it's the boy racers that occasionally ride through this park but I haven't seen any for a few months.

But once in this little park, you will find it surprisingly peaceful. There is a nice new playground attached for the local children and this playground is protected by a high railing so that the night time visitors don't get in to wreak it. So far this has remained a nice little park and i hope it stays that way.

I played tennis here once. Wouldn't come back despite low fare of €3 per hour (can't remember if…read morewas per person or for court). They have only two green courts and the rest four, maybe, tarmac (asphalt). One problem with green courts - they are not level! Ground goes down to one side. Not good. Another problem, fences are not that high and there are residents just beside it, so ball may end up in there back yard. Someone threw out ball back to us later, woo-hoo ;-) This place is also opened during very specific and short hours. There's annual subscription for €100, I think. Maybe €120. You can pay for a shorter period of time as well. Parking is on residential roads and it's free.
